English novelist Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (née Godwin) (August 30, 1797 - February 1, 1851), best known for her 1818 novel "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus." Wife of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, Shelley was a prolific novelist, biographer, short story and travelogue writer, and editor who also was engaged in liberal and feminist issues from early in her life. Her life was also marked by the personal tragedies of the deaths of two of her children, and her husband's drowning in 1822, after only 6 years of marriage.
