QOTD -- Disastrous

"The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers.

"He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations.

"It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment. " -- Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on the Malignant Fascist's decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities, after ignoring his own intelligence services' assessments about an Iranian nuclear weapon.  This is all Democrats need to be saying now, not "we want answers," or "we must be briefed," words that feckless party leaders utter who are unsure of themselves and are endlessly trying to catch up to the demands of the moment.  We, and AOC, know impeachment of the Malignant Fascist is never going to be on the table in any foreseeable future;  but, she speaks the truth and sets down a marker for her party to complete its slow evolution from loyal opposition to active resistance.

QOTD -- Strong Front

"...There’s very real danger here because with our electoral college, we know it doesn’t matter how many millions more votes you get. It’s about the smattering of states who just represent a few thousand votes’ difference between Trump and Biden.

“We are not in 2020, and seeing what that turnout may look like is something that I’m sure keeps many of us up at night. But that being said, I know that this is why, to me, support of President Biden has been very important, because this question is larger than any policy differences. This is truly about having a strong front against fascism in the United States...”  -- from an interview of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in The Guardian, talking about the need for a "strong front" against the fascism of the Republican Party/ cult in 2024.

Gosar Censure Vote Today

A small, but well- deserved action holding one of the worst psychos in the House Republican Nut Caucus responsible for his vileness:

The House plans to vote Wednesday on a resolution that would both censure Republican Congressman Paul Gosar and remove him from his committee assignments.

Gosar last week posted on Twitter an edited anime video that depicted him attacking President Biden and apparently killing Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He later deleted the tweet and issued a statement saying he doesn't condone violence.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday that the disciplinary plan was necessary because Gosar made threats about harming a member of Congress.

"That is in itself not only an endangerment of that member of congress but an insult to the House of Representatives," Pelosi said.
Gosar serves on the House Oversight and Reform Committee with Ocasio-Cortez. The resolution would remove him from that committee and the House Committee on Natural Resources. Congressional committees are where the language of bills are hashed out — and they can give lawmakers the power to shape laws and influence policy.

Earlier today, the House Rules Committee passed the resolution to censure Gosar and remove him from his seat on the two committees he serves on by a 9-4 vote, with (spoiler alert!) no Republican voting in favor.

As Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said, he'd be expelled "in a perfect world."  Now, he can roam the halls of Congress with fellow psycho Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Seditionist-GA), who was removed from her committee assignments in February but not censured for her bizarre and violent statements.

QOTD

I used to work as a bartender. These are the kinds of people that I threw out of bars all the time.” -- Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on seditionist Republican loon Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had earlier accosted and verbally assaulted AOC.  No one should have to put up with the vicious antics of Greene, who has too much time on her hands since she's been stripped of her committee assignments for making racist, anti- Semitic statements and for her support of low- IQAnon quackery.  What a complete disgrace to the Congress and to the State of Georgia.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's Lesson On Decency

In which Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) delivers a lesson on decency and leaves misogynist jackhole Rep. Ted "Yoyo" Yoho (R-FL) and indecent men like him properly gutted and filleted:

Right-Wing Lies Kick Into Gear Over Ocasio-Cortez Visit To Concentration Camps

Adam Silverman at Balloon Juice dissects a right- wing disinformation lie and influencing campaign unfolding in real time on the southern border:
A congressional delegation (CODEL) went to visit several Customs & Border Patrol (CBP) facilities today. John just put up a post about it here at Balloon Juice Actual. But we weren’t the only ones tracking on it. Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks, as well as her just being part of the CODEL, set off the expected firestorm. The highly credulous, fabulist Anna Giaritelli, who poses as The Washington Examiner‘s Homeland Security reporter, and who was not on site covering the CODEL, decided to report, first by tweet and then in the Examiner, that Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez threw a pair of temper tantrums during the visits. This was picked up by Students for Trump* on twitter and put on blast. Townhall, Breitbart, The Daily Caller, and The Blaze all picked up Giaritelli’s disinformation and published their own stories around it. So while there are at least five articles about this in the conservative news media, four of them simply refer back to Giaritelli’s original reporting, which hasn’t been confirmed by any of the reporters actually in attendance with the CODEL. [snip]
I expect that by the evening the disinformation will have fully spread throughout the Republican, conservative, alt-right, and white supremacist information ecosystems. It’ll finish making the rounds of Twitter and Facebook, jump to Gab, the Chans, and the sub-reddits. From there it will be amplified. Most likely by the President’s caddy, Dan Scavino, who runs the President’s social media feeds, Jr, and other of the President’s social media surrogates, as well as the Russian troll and bot networks will pick it up and kick it into high gear. And, if we were able to actually monitor the direct messages of Scavino, Jr, Giaritelli, whomever is running the Students for Trump twitter account, as well as a variety of other Presidential surrogates, including those in the conservative news media, I would be very surprised to find that there isn’t widespread coordination going on between the players on these disinformation and influence operations.
As Silverman goes on to note, the purpose of the campaign is to not only smear Rep. Ocasio- Cortez, but to divert attention away from the inhumane, deadly conditions at the Trump concentration camps, such as people being encouraged to drink out of toilets. It's no surprise that the goon outfits Silverman mentions in the right- wing media miasma would eagerly repeat lies and smears -- after all, look at who they idolize.  What would also be no surprise: the corporate media being distracted by these shiny objects spread in their path.

Some of Trump's bullies- on- the- beat were also willing to pitch in to the campaign
Customs and Border Protection has launched an investigation into a secret Facebook group for current and former Border Patrol agents who posted derogatory remarks targeting migrants and lawmakers.
The group, which called itself "I'm 10-15" — a reference to the Border Patrol code for "aliens in custody" — was revealed Monday by ProPublica, a nonprofit news organization, as a delegation of Democratic congressional lawmakers toured three migrant detention facilities in southwestern Texas.
Among the group's most offensive posts were discussions of recent migrant deaths, including that of a 16-year-old Guatemalan boy who died in May while he was in Border Patrol custody in Texas. Other posts joked about throwing burritos at lawmakers visiting its facilities.
Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, who were both part of the delegation, were also targets of the group. Members referred to the women as "scumbags" and on multiple occasions posted graphic illustrations of Ocasio-Cortez performing a sex act.
We believe this is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg and that other examples of sociopaths- in- uniform exist that we may never know about.  The evil instincts many of these people have long suppressed has been given a green light by the words and actions of the demagogue in the White (Supremacist) House.  Beyond exposing them, we agree with Rep. Nadler that there are crimes that deserve to be prosecuted here (but, we won't be holding our breath on that).  Also unlikely, though to be desired, is a tear- down and re- forming of the CBP into a more professional and humane organization.

It's fortunate that we have moral, courageous people like Rep. Ocasio- Cortez and Rep. Escobar to act as the conscience that is so missing in the current regime and its minions.  It's small comfort, but it's what we have right now in this hellscape.

(Reminder:  If you can, please consider donating to humanitarian relief efforts for the immigrant community.)

Exceptionally Cruel

Merriam- Webster dictionary:
concentration camp: a place where large numbers of people (such as prisoners of war, political prisoners, refugees, or the members of an ethnic or religious minority) are detained or confined under armed guard —used especially in reference to camps created by the Nazis in World War II for the internment and persecution of Jews and other prisoners.
***
Nearly a week ago in a tweet, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) described the places where the Trump regime is warehousing asylum- seeking families as "concentration camps." Since then, there's been a lot of reaction and counter- reaction to the characterization. The perpetually outraged right took great umbrage at the use of the term (as well as the usual "both sides" jackasses), being the defenders that they are of a morally superior "American exceptionalism."  Of course, these are the absolute last people on earth who have a claim  to speak for "American values," something the new generation of Millennial progressives is keenly aware of, a higher proportion of whom are people of color.  They and their families have experienced the gap more starkly than most between the moralistic "American exceptionalism" rhetoric and the American reality.

Peter Beinart makes the point that Ocasio-Cortez's comment points to this reframing of "exceptionalism" in light of the Trump regime's America's treatment of families on the border:
Ocasio-Cortez’s comment about concentration camps is only the latest example of this broad challenge to American exceptionalism. She didn’t claim that Trump’s detention centers are the equivalent of Auschwitz. But she denied that America is a separate moral category, so inherently different from the world’s worst regimes that it requires a separate language. On Tuesday night she retweeted the actor George Takei, who wrote, “I know what concentration camps are. I was inside two of them, in America.” This was another act of linguistic transgression. When remembering the detention of Japanese Americans during World War II, Americans have generally employed the term internment camps—largely, the historian Roger Daniels has argued, to create a clear separation between America’s misdeeds and those of its hated foes.
Masha Gessen makes a similar point:
... It is not an argument about language. Ocasio-Cortez and her opponents agree that the term “concentration camp” refers to something so horrible as to be unimaginable. (For this reason, mounting a defense of Ocasio-Cortez’s position by explaining that not all concentration camps were death camps misses the point.) It is the choice between thinking that whatever is happening in reality is, by definition, acceptable, and thinking that some actual events in our current reality are fundamentally incompatible with our concept of ourselves—not just as Americans but as human beings—and therefore unimaginable. The latter position is immeasurably more difficult to hold—not so much because it is contentious and politically risky, as attacks on Ocasio-Cortez continue to demonstrate, but because it is cognitively strenuous. It makes one’s brain implode. It will always be a minority position.
If your image of America today is that we're not creating concentration camps, how does this fit that image:
A prematurely born infant and her 17-year-old mother spent seven days being almost entirely neglected in Border Patrol custody, according to lawyers who visited an immigrant processing station in McAllen, Texas, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The baby, barely a month old, was wrapped in a dirty towel, wore a soiled onesie and looked listless, said one of the lawyers, Hope Frye. The mother was in a wheelchair due to complications from her emergency C-section and had barely slept ― the pain made it too uncomfortable for her to lie down and she was afraid of dropping her baby, the immigration and human rights attorney said.
How about this:
Four toddlers were so severely ill and neglected at a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, that lawyers forced the government to hospitalize them last week.
The children, all under age 3 with teenage mothers or guardians, were feverish, coughing, vomiting and had diarrhea, immigration attorneys told HuffPost on Friday. Some of the toddlers and infants were refusing to eat or drink. One 2-year-old’s eyes were rolled back in her head, and she was “completely unresponsive” and limp, according to Toby Gialluca, a Florida-based attorney.
How about this:
A 2-year-old boy locked in detention wants to be held all the time. A few girls, ages 10 to 15, say they’ve been doing their best to feed and soothe the clingy toddler who was handed to them by a guard days ago. Lawyers warn that kids are taking care of kids, and there’s inadequate food, water and sanitation for the 250 infants, children and teens at the Border Patrol station.

The bleak portrait emerged Thursday after a legal team interviewed 60 children at the facility near El Paso that has become the latest place where attorneys say young migrants are describing neglect and mistreatment at the hands of the U.S. government.
"... [A]t the hands of the U.S. government."  Those are the children, who are the most helpless of all. That's us government- by- the- people citizens.  That's the banality of evil. That's America. That's reality, 2019.

If you're as sickened by this as we are, please contact your Senators and your Representative and demand that the government immediately provide humanitarian aid -- including medical assistance -- to these victims of our exceptionalism.  Because, this is cruelty being used as a deterrent to migration. It's cruelty as policy, and it's being done in your name and ours.

BONUS:  But of course.

BONUS II:  If only...

So thank you, Utah, and thank you Sen. Lee;  our children and grandchildren will be sure to thank you and your fellow Republican shitstains in the future as well.

Ocasio-Cortez Shines On Colbert

From last night's Late Show with Stephen Colbert, charismatic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reveals how many f*cks she gives about critics who tell her to wait her turn and keep quiet. She also explains (to the likes of plutocrat puppet and former Gov. Scott Walker) what a marginal tax rate is.

Monday Reading

As always, please go to the links for the full articles/ op eds.

Unless there is powerful push- back, the "mainstream media" is on track to pull another 2016 on us, using false norms and "both sides" asymmetry to bring progressives down to the level of existential threat Donald "Rump" Trump.  Paul Rosenberg has a good read about how Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is the first example out of the box in the 2020 cycle:
This is precisely what’s happening again with Elizabeth Warren. And it will happen with every single Democratic candidate, which is why they ought to have rushed immediately to her defense in solidarity. What’s especially striking is how this is already playing out against a woman who has arguably been Trump’s leading target in the potential 2020 field ever since the 2016 election, precisely because she is his arch-nemesis: a good-government progressive, a woman and a genuine self-made success.
Warren’s supposed stumbles or difficulties are not actually about anything she has actually done, but rather how the so-called liberal media has been hacked to turn against her. They never effectively recognized or responded to the racist “Pocahontas” slur when Trump first deployed it, or when he doubled down on it, much as they failed to respond to Trump’s tireless promotion of birtherism. Nor did they take much notice of the Boston Globe report that cleared Warren of charges that she used her ancestry claim to gain unfair professional advancement. To top it all off, they badly mischaracterized her follow-up release of her ancestry DNA — a move she clearly saw as routine, following the Globe report. [snip]
If Warren was guilty of anything, it was failing to recognize how badly the so-called liberal media had been hacked by decades of right-wing ideological warfare. She’s not alone in this, and it can’t be separated from everything else going wrong in America today. It’s exceedingly difficult to grasp just how badly the media’s false balance and other misleading norms have been twisted to produce such high volumes of misleading propaganda, usually without the slightest awareness of what they’re doing. (our emphasis)
Rosenberg goes on to promote Jay Rosen's "citizens agenda" model of campaign journalism, where voters are placed in the role of identifying their issues and forming the questions journalists would be asking candidates, while offering additional thoughts on reforming how elections are covered. (Also: FFS, Anderson Cooper!)

But, it seems, you'll always have Fox "News." Robert Brent Toplin takes the chaotic events of December 20 to illustrate how that Republican media organ responded to the meltdown:
What kind of reporting does the Fox News viewership receive through prime-time reporting and commentary? Consider the lessons viewers learned on Thursday, December 20, 2018, an extraordinary day of troubles for Trump’s presidency. Leading print and television journalists outside of Fox expressed shock that Trump suddenly announced plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria and quickly draw down half of U.S. troops in Afghanistan. [snip]
General Jim Mattis’s decision to resign as Secretary of Defense, also received abundant commentary on December 20. Mattis’s letter of resignation communicated strong disagreement with the direction of U.S. foreign policy. [snip]
On the home front, President Trump led congressional leaders to believe that a compromise was workable on temporarily funding the government. But Trump suddenly reversed his position, insisting there would be no settlement unless Congress provided $5 billion for a border wall. On December 20 the stock market tanked on this news and other developments. The next day Wall Street closed with its worst week since the financial crisis of 2008. [snip]
Even though the real “news” on December 20 was about struggles in Congress to keep the government running, Fox’s prime-time programming highlighted stories about an immigrant invasion. Commentators asserted falsely that Democrats advocated “open borders.” They accentuated a report about a violent undocumented immigrant in California. In each program hosts and commentators left viewers with an impression that the big news of the day concerned security threats from aliens. Speakers praised President Trump for his determination to build a wall.
As long as there's a Fox "News" and other right- wing media, their loyal but credulous followers will continue to be gulled into thinking everything is just fine -- except for existence of the damn libs. It seems quaint now to think how, less than two years ago, the ascendance of the sons of Rupert Murdoch at Fox was seen as a moderating turn by suckers in the media =cough= New York Times =cough=.  How's that workin' out for ya?

Paul Krugman compares the tax policies supported by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) with those of the Republican caucus:
Why do Republicans adhere to a tax theory that has no support from nonpartisan economists and is refuted by all available data? Well, ask who benefits from low taxes on the rich, and it’s obvious.
And because the party’s coffers demand adherence to nonsense economics, the party prefers “economists” who are obvious frauds and can’t even fake their numbers effectively.
Which brings me back to AOC, and the constant effort to portray her as flaky and ignorant. Well, on the tax issue she’s just saying what good economists say; and she definitely knows more economics than almost everyone in the G.O.P. caucus, not least because she doesn’t “know” things that aren’t true. (our emphasis)
We can't resist Krugman's companion tweets on the subject:

Tweet Of The Day

Her "sis," of course, being Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and her quite accurate choice of a word describing Donald "Rump" Trump, which caused many pearls to be clutched by Republican hypocrites (starting with Rump) and the usual, very concerned slapdicks in the media.

Tweets Of The Day -- Growing Authoritarianism

Hey! Someone doing their job:

Putting Huckleberry in his place:

With an assist:

(If you want some fresh examples of the hatred, take a quick look at the responses to this thread in Ms. Ocasio's twitter feed -- mmm-boy those Republicans love their dehumanizing memes!)
