Rock and pop instrumentals used to be a more common genre in the '50s and '60s, with the likes of The Ventures, Duane Eddy and others crafting hits. Buffalo's Rockin' Rebels had their one big hit with 1963's "Wild Weekend," which reflected the almost innocent American zeitgeist at the time.
