President Obama announced today he's issuing a policy directive granting children of illegal immigrants the right to stay in the U.S. and work, as long as they've been law-abiding. The action, which halts deportations of this population, bypasses the Rethuglican Congress and puts in place a key feature of the Rethug-stymied "DREAM" Act. It's likely to effect about 800,000 young people, be warmly received in the Hispanic community, and cause major consternation in Wingnuttia, and an outbreak of rude assholery.
Well done, Mr. President!
BONUS: Here's Rethuglican saint Ronald Reagan in 1984: "I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though sometime back they may have entered illegally." Yep, the Rethugs wouldn't elect him dogcatcher these days.
