Former Sen. George McGovern passed away early this morning at the age of 90. Sen. McGovern was the 1972 Democratic nominee for President, losing in a landslide in the 1972 elections to Richard Nixon, who set the Watergate crimes in motion and insured his own resignation two years later. McGovern was one of the most prominent liberals of his time. Under John F. Kennedy's administration, McGovern ran the "food for peace" program, and was a decorated World War II bomber pilot in Europe. Daily Kos has a nice article this morning on Sen. McGovern's life and passing.
