The Department of Energy has announced a major effort to increase the amount of energy generated by wind power, providing $28 million to support 7 offshore wind farms. The Federal money will be supplemented by industry and other funding, and will allow the farms to be up and running no later than 2017.
The funding is part of a $200 million drive by the Obama Administration over 2 years to increase the share of electricity generated by wind power. The DOE press release states that fully developing U.S. offshore wind power technology could produce approximately 4,000 gigawatts of power, four times our current electricity generation capacity.
