Republican Values: Sex Trafficking Edition
Timothy Nolan, a former Kentucky county district judge and a co-chair of sexual predator Donald "Rump" Trump's 2016 campaign in Kentucky, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for human trafficking. Pleading guilty to 21 counts of human trafficking, Nolan was also fined $100,000. The charges stem from years of Nolan extorting sex from female prisoners under the age of 18 in return for lenient treatment and often drugs.
Nolan has been a well-known player in right-wing politics in Kentucky, campaigning for Rump in 2016 and on conservative issues for years. The conviction fits with a striking pattern of right-wing Rethuglicans involved in sex-related crimes, along with other felonies. Of course, Rethug party leader Rump has yet to be held to account for the numerous charges of sexual abuse and misconduct by 18 women, so the pattern starts with a party/ideology/leader that demeans women and tacitly accepts powerful men engaging in sexual misconduct.

It doesn't stop.
Saphire -- There is a sickness in their politics and culture. We have to stop them at every level when we can.
Trump's malignancy has spread throughout the Republican party. Honestly, it's always been there, like nasty Newt Gingrich and his problems with women, but under this administration, corruption and abuse of women are part of the ugliness that make up the party. And they can't hide it.
November can't get here soon enough!
donnah -- We feel the same way about November. We can't take anything for granted. We have to stand up, speak up and show up.
Ugh, no words. Again.
Absolutely!
What are your thoughts on the feelings of the general public? I live in SW Ohio and we've got a lot of gerrymandered voting districts. I think that if Trump continues on his destructive path, and of course he will, we might see a turn from a red to a blue state. That being said, November is a few months away, and if Joe Voter sees some extra money in his paycheck and he listens to FOX news every day, we aren't going to win him over.
And we bloggers and blog readers pay a lot more attention to what's happening in the country through a political lens. My mom, who's in her eighties, doesn't know much about what's happening, although I try to keep her apprised of news, especially about Medicare and Social Security. But how many people simply aren't outraged like we are?
I will join my husband and son this fall, canvassing and calling for the Democratic Party. I hope we see landslides across the board, but I'll take narrow victories, too. Anything to get this terrible group of monsters and morons out of our government.
donnah -- Our thoughts are that mid-term elections normally bring out the politically aware and motivated. Except this year, the "woke" phenomenon is something to behold, with elections in state and local jurisdictions turning red districts blue. Trump so far has managed to get in the way of his messaging, with his erratic and extreme behavior. The tax cuts may not be a factor in Nov., but the Rethuglican noise machine and corporate-backed ads will try to convince people to the contrary. What your family and ours are doing will go a long way to neutralizing that, and we may even get a boost from the Mueller investigation (Trumpists won't be swayed of course). Stay strong.
