Staying Classy

Surprised not surprised:
Donald Trump, who in recent weeks has stirred racial tensions, says he has no plans to visit the late Congressman John Lewis as the civil rights icon lies in state at the US Capitol.
"No I won't be going," the president said. "No."

Actually, a grateful nation thanks you for not defiling the occasion with your presence.

Meanwhile, the body of Rep. John Lewis lies in state in the Capitol rotunda, surrounded by fellow Congressmen, Senators, other officials, and former Vice President Biden and Jill Biden, all of whom were lifted by his presence among them.

As the president, Trump should have gone. It's right in his back yard, and he has no excuse, other than to snub the memory of a man far greater than he will ever be.

With that said, I'm relieved that he didn't go. Mike Pence slithered in as his representative, but didn't get much camera time, which is fine with me. The service was short and sweet. I shook my head when McConnell spoke, hearing hollow words from an empty soul, but applauded when Nancy Pelosi spoke, and then “invited” a respected guest to speak, and they played a recording of Lewis. It was moving and respectful. It was good that Trump did not attend.

donnah -- it was a moving, fitting tribute. It's too bad the hypocritical Repubs were allowed to shed their crocodile tears, but such is tradition...
