Sunday Reflection: Life Lessons

"Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose-it teaches you about life." Tennis great Billie Jean King, winner of a total of 39 Grand Slam titles, in singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Founder of the Women's Tennis Association, King was a ground breaker in the causes of gender equality and LGBTQ rights, having come out in the early 1980s. The highly publicized "Battle of the Sexes" tennis exhibition match with Bobby Riggs in 1973, won by King, helped to further promote women's tennis. King turns 77 today.

I remember well the King-Riggs match. I was in high school. She did not flinch as she played her way into history and I've always admire her for her guts and her brains.

donnah -- She was cool and calm; he was obnoxious and cocky. It was satisfying to see her win.
