If you've had the chance to watch some of the U.S. Olympic trials, you've probably come to the conclusion that it's likely to be the "year of the U.S. women" in Tokyo. From the performances of star gymnast Simone Biles and the gymnastics team, to record-busting Katie Ledecky and her swim teammates, to flashy, flame-haired sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson in track and field, we have perhaps the best overall women's roster since the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta. It's also a time of transition to a newer generation of athletes. The great multiple gold medalist in track Alexis Felix lost her bid to represent the U.S. in the 200 meter, placing fifth behind winner and Harvard grad Gabby Thomas. (Felix will run in the 400 meter race in Tokyo).
If the trials are any foreshadowing, this collection of superb athletes will lift us up.
