Weekend Music

Earlier this week, we noted the 70th birthday of Bruce Springsteen, one of the great songwriters and performers of this era.  Watching Ken Burns' series "Country Music" on PBS the past two weeks reminded us of one of our favorite singers, Emmylou Harris.  So, what could be better than marrying the two über talents in one song, "Tougher Than The Rest," written by Springsteen and performed by Harris.  Hope you enjoy.

Mid-Week Birthday Song

The lovely and very talented Emmylou Harris turns a young 67 today.  Harris has won 13 Grammys over her career, the latest being the 2014 Grammy for Best Americana Album with Rodney Crowell.  Harris has performed with countless other artists, including Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, and Linda Ronstadt.  Here she is playing Neil Young's "Long May You Run," a wish we extend to her on her birthday.

Saturday Song

Singer Emmylou Harris turns a young 64 today, so we're featuring "Boulder to Birmingham" from her 1975 album, "Pieces of the Sky." The song reflected her feelings over the death of her boyfriend, rock artist Gram Parsons.

"I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham/I would hold my life in his saving grace/I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham/If I thought I could see, I could see your face."

Harris spent her teen years in Northern Virginia, and performed at such bluegrass venues as the Birchmere and the long-gone Red Fox Inn in Bethesda, before her rise to stardom.
