Robert Mueller Speaks Out About His Investigations And Stone Prosecution

Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller writes an op/ ed in the Washington Post, defending the work of his office and the prosecution of Roger Stone against the ongoing lies and slurs of Putin puppet Donald "Impeached Forever" Trump.  Here are a few snippets:
The work of the special counsel’s office — its report, indictments, guilty pleas and convictions — should speak for itself. But I feel compelled to respond both to broad claims that our investigation was illegitimate and our motives were improper, and to specific claims that Roger Stone was a victim of our office. The Russia investigation was of paramount importance. Stone was prosecuted and convicted because he committed federal crimes. He remains a convicted felon, and rightly so. [snip]
Russian efforts to interfere in our political system, and the essential question of whether those efforts involved the Trump campaign, required investigation. In that investigation, it was critical for us (and, before us, the FBI) to obtain full and accurate information. Likewise, it was critical for Congress to obtain accurate information from its witnesses. When a subject lies to investigators, it strikes at the core of the government’s efforts to find the truth and hold wrongdoers accountable. It may ultimately impede those efforts.
We made every decision in Stone’s case, as in all our cases, based solely on the facts and the law and in accordance with the rule of law. The women and men who conducted these investigations and prosecutions acted with the highest integrity. Claims to the contrary are false.
Mueller's op/ ed fills in the rest of the story for the record.  It's important that we not let the firehose of lies coming from the orange shitgibbon and his many hacks and enablers become the narrative.

Robert Mueller Turns 74

Happy birthday to Special Counsel Robert Mueller who turns 74 today. Mueller, a decorated Marine Corps officer combat veteran of Viet Nam, who has devoted his professional career to hunting down and putting bad guys behind bars is up against a narcissistic, recklessly ignorant, draft-dodging disparager of POWs and probable Kremlin asset. Our money's on Mueller.

Trump Fought The Law (And The Law Will Win)

This will be a necessarily long post, with extensive excerpts about where things are headed in the investigations into the crime family and associates of un- indicted co- conspirator Donald "Rump" Trump.

There's been some buzz recently about an article by Adam Davidson in The New Yorker, offering his opinion that we're seeing the final act of the farce known as the Trump Administration. We're excerpting chunks of that article, which generally line up with our views of how things might play out.  As always, please go to the link and read the full piece.

Davidson begins with the tipping point:  the F.B.I. raid on Rump mouthpiece and "fixer" Michael "Clown Roy Cohn" Cohen:
... This week, we learned that Cohen has been under criminal investigation for months—his e-mails have been read, presumably his phones have been tapped, and his meetings have been monitored. Trump has long declared a red line: Robert Mueller must not investigate his businesses, and must only look at any possible collusion with Russia. That red line is now crossed and, for Trump, in the most troubling of ways. Even if he were to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and then had Mueller and his investigation put on ice, and even if—as is disturbingly possible—Congress did nothing, the Cohen prosecution would continue. Even if Trump pardons Cohen, the information the Feds have on him can become the basis for charges against others in the Trump Organization.
Davidson summarizes why he thinks this is far more of a mortal threat to Rump than the investigation into his campaign's collusion with Russia"
... Some have been skeptical of the idea that President Trump himself knowingly colluded with Russian officials. It seems not at all Trumpian to participate in a complex plan with a long-term, uncertain payoff. Collusion is an imprecise word, but it does seem close to certain that his son Donald, Jr., and several people who worked for him colluded with people close to the Kremlin; it is up to prosecutors and then the courts to figure out if this was illegal or merely deceitful. We may have a hard time finding out what President Trump himself knew and approved.
However, I am unaware of anybody who has taken a serious look at Trump’s business who doesn’t believe that there is a high likelihood of rampant criminality. In Azerbaijan, he did business with a likely money launderer for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. In the Republic of Georgia, he partnered with a group that was being investigated for a possible role in the largest known bank-fraud and money-laundering case in history. In Indonesia, his development partner is “knee-deep in dirty politics”; there are criminal investigations of his deals in Brazil; the F.B.I. is reportedly looking into his daughter Ivanka’s role in the Trump hotel in Vancouver, for which she worked with a Malaysian family that has admitted to financial fraud. Back home, Donald, Jr., and Ivanka were investigated for financial crimes associated with the Trump hotel in SoHo—an investigation that was halted suspiciously. His Taj Mahal casino received what was then the largest fine in history for money-laundering violations.
Then he tells us why, when the facts come forward, even some Rump supporters who voted for him in spite of (or even because of) his shady reputation will be disabused of their fantasies:
The narrative that will become widely understood is that Donald Trump did not sit atop a global empire. He was not an intuitive genius and tough guy who created billions of dollars of wealth through fearlessness. He had a small, sad operation, mostly run by his two oldest children and Michael Cohen, a lousy lawyer who barely keeps up the pretenses of lawyering and who now faces an avalanche of charges, from taxicab-backed bank fraud to money laundering and campaign-finance violations.
Cohen, Donald, Jr., and Ivanka monetized their willingness to sign contracts with people rejected by all sensible partners. Even in this, the Trump Organization left money on the table, taking a million dollars here, five million there, even though the service they provided—giving branding legitimacy to blatantly sketchy projects—was worth far more. It was not a company that built value over decades, accumulating assets and leveraging wealth. It burned through whatever good will and brand value it established as quickly as possible, then moved on to the next scheme.
We left a lot out, so please check out Davidson's full piece.

If you're wondering "But what happens if Rod Rosenstein or Robert Mueller is fired?", Cristian Farias at New York Magazine has a plausible response:
Assuming the worst-case scenario of firing Rosenstein — or maybe the best, because it would afford Trump the cleanest chance to appoint a crony to assert control over the probe — what then? Does it all get shut down and go away? Peter Carr, the special counsel’s spokesman, declined to comment when asked by New York what conversations, if any, Mueller’s elite team of prosecutors has had to protect its own work from presidential interference. But it’s not inconceivable that Mueller has already done his due diligence and has a plan or plans in place in contemplation of his own dismissal.
To wit: The multiple FBI raids on Michael Cohen’s home, office, and hotel room this week — overseen by prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York, which covers Manhattan — resulted from a referral from Mueller to that office. [Preet] Bharara, who used to run the place before Trump showed him the door, acknowledged in his weekly talk show-cum-podcast that the existence of a wholly independent investigation out of a different office puts the Mueller probe, indirectly, on stronger footing. “I don’t see a way, legitimately or even pragmatically, that you can shut down a separate SDNY investigation once it is started. And boy, it is started,” Bharara said, using the acronym for his former office.
Rump and his "strip mall storefront"- caliber legal team have more than they can handle, not only with Mueller's A-team of investigators and prosecutors, but with the overseeing Federal judges (there are at least two grand juries underway) and, potentially, State prosecutors who will see to it that the investigations and criminal charges don't go away:
Mueller was deliberate from the outset of his appointment in choosing career lawyers and specialists with credentials and security clearances and relevant portfolios within the Justice Department that won’t vanish simply because their boss has been fired. Yessiree, Bob: Expect them to keep their heads down and continue the work. And to stay on their investigatory leads, to meet their court deadlines, and to attend any hearings they may be required to attend in the cases now public and active — against Manafort, Rick Gates, Michael Flynn, George Papadopoulos, and others that are now docketed with the court system. Trump can’t just flush all this work down the toilet. And should blanket pardons be in the offing — the only saving grace for an obstructor-in-chief — they’re ineffectual to stop potential state charges that may be in the works in New York or elsewhere.
All of this should be of great comfort to anyone fearing an impulsive Mueller or Rosenstein firing. Not because it may not happen, but because there are so many levels of government and moving parts and Department of Justice officials — to say nothing of the federal judges who are overseeing the active cases — working in tandem to ensure that the wheels of the special counsel’s operation keep turning...
It's enough to give even the crankiest pessimists a glimmer of hope. We hope.

Trump Lawyers: Avoid Mueller Interview By Having Trump Swear He Didn't Do It (And He'll Never Do It Again!)

Very Stable Genius has Very Stable Genius Legal Team:
With the possibility now looming that the president himself could be subject to an interview by the FBI or Mueller’s investigators, Trump’s legal team has been debating whether it would be possible to simply avoid it. [snip]
In addition to the possibility of suggesting the president submit written responses in place of an interview, a second person familiar with the president’s legal strategy said another possibility being contemplated was an affidavit signed by the president affirming he was innocent of any wrongdoing and denying any collusion.  (our emphasis)
Or he could just turn over his tweets declaring everything a hoax and that's that!

What are the odds the Very Stable Genius insisted his "legal team" float that genius idea?

Efforts By Trump, McGahn, Sessions To Obstruct Justice Reported

The New York Times reported yesterday on efforts by unfit nitwit Donald "Rump" Trump and several of his lickspittles to derail the FBI's investigation into his campaign's collusion with Russia. "Consciousness of guilt" weaves its way all throughout this:
President Trump gave firm instructions in March to the White House’s top lawyer: stop the attorney general, Jeff Sessions, from recusing himself in the Justice Department’s investigation into whether Mr. Trump’s associates had helped a Russian campaign to disrupt the 2016 election.
Public pressure was building for Mr. Sessions, who had been a senior member of the Trump campaign, to step aside. But the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, carried out the president’s orders and lobbied Mr. Sessions to remain in charge of the inquiry, according to two people with knowledge of the episode.
Mr. McGahn was unsuccessful, and the president erupted in anger in front of numerous White House officials, saying he needed his attorney general to protect him. (our emphasis)
Again, what does an innocent person need to be protected from, he asked rhetorically. Why would an innocent person want to do this, too:
The New York Times has also learned that four days before Mr. Comey was fired, one of Mr. Sessions’s aides asked a congressional staff member whether he had damaging information about Mr. Comey, part of an apparent effort to undermine the F.B.I. director. It was not clear whether Mr. Mueller’s investigators knew about this episode.
Mr. Mueller has also been examining a false statement that the president reportedly dictated on Air Force One in July in response to an article in The Times about a meeting that Trump campaign officials had with Russians in 2016. A new book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” by Michael Wolff, says that the president’s lawyers believed that the statement was “an explicit attempt to throw sand into the investigation’s gears,” and that it led one of Mr. Trump’s spokesmen to quit because he believed it was obstruction of justice.  [snip]
Two days after Mr. Comey’s testimony, an aide to Mr. Sessions approached a Capitol Hill staff member asking whether the staffer had any derogatory information about the F.B.I. director. The attorney general wanted one negative article a day in the news media about Mr. Comey, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting. (our emphasis)
Keep in mind this is several months after evil elf Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III supposedly recused himself from the Russia investigation, being led by then- FBI Director James Comey. A more rotten, dishonest cast of characters (cut from Rump's cloth) would be hard to imagine... and we're haven't even mentioned the knuckle- draggers on Capitol Hill that are desperate to protect this dysfunctional, loathsome, dangerous regime (see below).

BONUS:  Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog notes an effort by one lawyer in the White House to save Rump from himself (unsuccessfully).

BONUS II:  James Fallows says what we know to be true -- that the revelations in Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury" come as no surprise to those who, were they responsible country- before- party Republicans, would do something about Rump, but for their own malicious, twisted reasons have not. (h/t Mock Paper Scissors)

BONUS III: Michelle Goldberg echoes the same view - "Everyone in Trumpworld knows he's an idiot."

Happy Birthday Robert Mueller

Today is Special Counsel Robert Mueller's 73rd birthday. A decorated Marine officer who served in Vietnam, in the Justice Department and FBI, and who is continuing to serve his country in pursuit of justice as Special Counsel for the Russia-Trump scandal, Robert Mueller has earned the thanks of the nation. Happy birthday!

Trump Bootlicker Calls For Special Counsel Mueller To Resign (UPDATED)

See if you notice a "tell" here:
House Judiciary Committee member Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) is calling on Robert Mueller, special counsel for the Department of Justice’s Russia investigation, to resign.
Franks claims Mueller is violating a law governing the special counsel that prohibits him from serving if he has a “conflict of interest,” which includes “a personal relationship with any person substantially involved in the conduct that is the subject of the investigation or prosecution.”
Franks cited a Fox News report from May that cast Mueller and former FBI Director James Comey as “longtime allies.” Mueller served as the FBI Director when Comey was the Deputy Attorney General in 2003. The Russia investigation has expanded to include possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia and the president’s decision to fire the FBI director.
“Bob Mueller is in clear violation of federal code and must resign to maintain the integrity of the investigation into alleged Russian ties,” Franks said in a statement.
Did you catch the Fox "News" reference, that fount from which all evil political mischief flows -- "a Fox News report from May..."?  That particular stupidity has been out there since May, so why the sudden elevation of it into a demand that Mueller resign? Was it perhaps this bat- shit signal from the shitgbbon just a few days ago:

=Pant=pant= arf arf!= Good guard doggy, Trent!

Sensing the closing prosecutorial noose around Rump's fat neck, a wall of  treasonous, dead- ender co- conspirators is beginning to form around the shitgibbon in the House and Senate. Not surprisingly, it includes Rep. Trent "Beans And" Franks (Teabag - AZ). Franks is one of the most dangerous loons in the House (and, that's a statement right there), having opined that African Americans were better off under slavery, proposing bills that foster Islamophobia, and being a virulent opponent of a woman's right to choose. Now he's part of an emerging cabal of ultra- rightists determined to "protect" the un-indicted co-conspirator and risk obstructing justice rather than uphold the rule of law. Party before country!

UPDATE:  We are also now hearing that (allegedly!) the shitgibbon wanted to push Fox's malicious, fabricated conspiracy story about Democratic staffer Seth Rich's murder last summer. They needed a distraction and a diversion from the emerging Trump-Russia scandal, of course. So, working hand in hand, they created this hurtful, monstrous conspiracy tale, because no road is ever too low for this sociopathic shitheel or his enablers.

Sen. Franken Dismantles Trump's Efforts To Discredit Special Counsel's Team

Why we love Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), part infinity. Watch how he dismantles the emerging Trumpian attack on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's hiring of people who contributed to Democrats (h/t Crooks & Liars):

Trump Under Investigation For Obstruction Of Justice

Breaking news from the Washington Post:
The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.
The move by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump’s conduct marks a major turning point in the nearly year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.
Trump had received private assurances from then-FBI Director James B. Comey starting in January that he was not personally under investigation. Officials say that changed shortly after Comey’s firing.
It would have been news had Mueller not been looking into Rump's interference, given the obvious evidence. But this opens yet another avenue into what Rump's motivation for obstructing might have been, and obviously raises the stakes even higher as obstruction would be an impeachable offense.

How much more pressure will an undisciplined, paranoid Rump tolerate before he blows a gasket and tries to fire Mueller?

Will Trump Fire Special Counsel Mueller?

As the noose tightens (and the less we see and hear about what's going on in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, the more serious it's nature), it appears some moves are being considered by un-indicted co- conspirator Donald "Rump" Trump.

Here's Rump confidante and Newsmax sleazeball CEO Chris Ruddy:

As MSNBC's Kyle Griffin notes, there's a pattern quickly developing in the Trump swamp:

We wouldn't put anything past this existential threat to American democracy. Rump firing James Comey didn't stop the investigation, but simply added to the growing impression that he's furiously trying to hide his criminality and/ or treasonous behavior.

We hope Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) has an accurate read on the mood of Congress (but we're skeptical):

Call it a "tell," or "consciousness of guilt," or just plain "obstruction of justice," for Rump to do this would be in the same category (though with far greater implications for national security and democratic governance) than the "Saturday Night Massacre" that ultimately led to Richard Nixon's resignation before certain impeachment.

BONUS:  Republican strategist Rick Wilson has an epic tweetstorm about the Rump enablers and "fanboys."

Special Counsel Named To Investigate Trump- Russia Connection

This is a huge, long- awaited development for those of us interested in getting an impartial (i.e., non- Congressional) investigation into the Trump- Russia nexus going:
The Department of Justice announced on Wednesday evening former FBI director Robert Mueller will serve as a special counsel to oversee the FBI’s investigation of the Russian government’s efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election.
The investigation will also examine “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump,” according to the order creating the position.
It’s an official concession from the Justice Department that the Russian intervention in the 2016 presidential election was an extraordinary circumstance, and that bringing in an outsider to oversee the investigation is in the public interest. Rod Rosenstein, the second-in-command at the Justice Department, made the decision. That’s because he oversees the Russia investigation, due to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ recusing himself from it.
It’s not currently clear if the White House received notice the announcement was coming.
Mueller will have the power to bring in staff from outside the Justice Department to help with the investigation, and will have all the authority of a U.S. Attorney. He will also be able to request a budget for the investigation, which Rosenstein will ultimately approve.
“In my capacity as acting Attorney General, I determined that it is in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a special counsel to assume responsibility for this matter,” he said in a statement. “My decision is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted.”
“What I have determined is that based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command.”
This is expected to focus and greatly accelerate the investigatory process, given the fact that Mueller is a well- regarded, professional with standing in the FBI and intelligence community.  We have no doubt they're doing cartwheels over at the FBI building right now.

Rosenstein did the right thing, clearly under pressure because of the revelations of the past few days of unfit Donald "Rump" Trump's bizarre leaking of highly sensitive intel to Russian officials, and most importantly, the leak of former Director James Comey's memo indicating Rump's interest in Comey dropping the investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn's Russian connections.

Something worth watching is how this impacts and interfaces with the on- going "inquiries" by various Congressional committees, which have been hamstrung by Republican efforts to slow-walk progress or provide distractions to the main focus.

But, at the risk of being overly optimistic, we're still going to be sleeping a little better tonight.
