Monday Reading

As always, please go to the link for the full article.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!
After President Trump signed the Republican tax cut into law, companies put out cheery announcements that they were giving workers bonuses because of their expected windfalls from the tax reductions. The president and Republican lawmakers quickly held up these news releases as vindication for their argument that cutting the top federal corporate tax rate to 21 percent, from 35 percent, would boost workers’ incomes even as it added $1.5 trillion to the debt that future generations would have to pay off.
Now corporate announcements and analyst reports confirm what honest observers always said — this claim is pure fantasy. As executives tell investors what they intend to do with their tax savings and their spending plans are tabulated into neat charts and graphs, the reports jibe with what most experts said would happen: Companies are rewarding their stockholders. (our emphasis)
Brian Beutler writes about Putin pawn Donald "Rump" Trump's other conspirators in allowing Russians to meddle in the 2016 election:
For more than a year now, people who take things like criminal conspiracies to subvert American elections seriously actually have kicked around whether Obama should have done more before November 2016 to alert the public to the still-unfolding plot. There are fair arguments on both sides of the question, but each has to contend with the fact that Obama knew the Republican congressional leadership—Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell most vociferously—would dispute his administration, call the intelligence into question, and accuse Obama of using the country’s vast spying powers to help select his own successor. Obama, rather than Vladimir Putin, would be the meddler in this telling, colluding with Hillary Clinton, against poor Donald Trump.
This naked subordination by the Republican leadership of every national interest—of fair elections, and protecting the country against the risk of a major party presidential candidate having a corrupt relationship with a hostile power—should have been the source of unending shame since it was first reported in December 2016. But the indictments and the Schiff memo fill out the context in which McConnell and the others intervened to let Russia’s illegal efforts on behalf of Trump continue, and it is even more horrible than we knew. (our emphasis)
Lock them up!  Lock them up!

Of course, the Republican conspiracy continues:
Top Republicans on Capitol Hill have made a concerted decision in their Russia inquiries: They are staying away from digging into the finances of President Donald Trump and his family.
Six Republican leaders of key committees told CNN they see little reason to pursue those lines of inquiry or made no commitments to do so -- even as Democrats say determining whether there was a financial link between Trump, his family, his business and Russians is essential to understanding whether there was any collusion in the 2016 elections.  (our emphasis)
Don't worry.  Special Counsel Mueller has no qualms about following the money.

In "only the best people" news:
The president’s personal pilot is on the administration's short list to head the Federal Aviation Administration. Trump has told a host of administration officials and associates that he wants John Dunkin — his longtime personal pilot, who flew him around the country on Trump Force One during the campaign — to helm the agency, which has a budget in the billions and which oversees all civil aviation in the United States.
What I'm hearing: One industry insider equated this to the Seinfeld episode when Cosmo Kramer used his golf caddy as a jury consultant...  (our emphasis)
Apologies to Kramer for any comparison to Rump!

Dems Release Key Transcript In Russiagate Story (UPDATED)

After party-first-country-whenever obstructionist Rethuglicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee refused to release the transcript of the testimony of opposition research firm Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson from August, 2017, the Committee's Democrats released the transcript (embedded at the link) so that the public could get a complete picture of Russia's interference in the 2016 elections. Judiciary Committee Chairman, the odious hayseed Sen. Charles Grassley (Rethug-Ethanol) and his cohorts on the Committee are trying to discredit Fusion's investigator, former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, and the FBI, in order to divert attention from the serious charges being leveled in the Russiagate scandal. Withholding the transcript gave the Trumpist Rethugs cover to go after the whistleblower rather than the perpetrators, while denying the public it's right to the truth.

The key revelation in the transcript is that the Fusion / Steele "dossier" was not the impetus for the FBI's opening of the Russiagate probe, as the Rethugs and White (Supremacist) House have alleged in order to discredit the FBI's investigation, which is the Trumpists' main goal next to discrediting Robert Mueller and his team of prosecutors. In a  January 2 op-ed in the New York Times, Simpson and Fusion GPS co-founder Peter Fritsch stated that the impetus for the FBI investigation was from other sources both inside and outside of the Trump campaign (it was separately disclosed that Trump foreign affairs "advisor" George Papadopoulos had drunkenly tipped off Australia's ambassador to the UK about Moscow's election interference in the spring of 2016, which led to the FBI investigation).

Good for the Senate Dems responsible for getting this transcript out in public, if only to expose the Rethuglicans' unpatriotic attempts to undermine the FBI's investigation of Moscow's partnership with the Trump campaign during 2016.

UPDATE:  Apparently publicly unknown until now, the FBI had a source inside the Rump campaign --
The feedback from Steele, as filtered through Simpson, is that the FBI had an asset inside the Trump campaign by September 2016—months before the arrest and recruitment of Papadopoulos—and that this resource made the FBI more receptive to the information that Steele was giving them. Including, possibly, the personal information that Russia might use to blackmail Trump.
So, Steele's trying to give a heads- up to an ally that Rump is being/ might be blackmailed by the Russians.  And rancid corncob Grassley and his fellow traitors want to go after... Steele.

Also good to know the consequences of f*ckwads Eric Lichtblau and Steven Lee Myers of the New York Effing Times who, on October 31, credulously passed along their spoon- fed scoop that the FBI had found no evidence of Rump connections with Russia, which caused the Fusion GPS folks to stop dealing with the FBI, fearing (rightly) that there were Stormtrumpers in the FBI's New York office manipulating information to suit Rump's campaign:
Following on Comey re-opening the case into Clinton’s emails, the New York Times’ “nothing to see here” story was so counter to everything that Steele had passed along to the FBI that he severed his relationship out of concern that Trump or the Russians had actually flipped the FBI. That story—one of the two most important and influential stories of the campaign season—remains completely unsourced and unexplained.

Watching The "Party First" Rethuglicans

In today's House Intelligence Committee hearing, the common thread of the Rethuglican questioning of FBI Director and Clinton ratf*cker James Comey has been that the leaking of damaging evidence that demagogue and Putin puppet Donald "Rump" Trump and his campaign staff colluded with Russia is far worse than what the leaks revealed. Party over country, patriotic Rethugs! Among the most egregious of the Rethuglicans following that approach at the hearing is none other than Benghazi Benghazi BENGHAZI!! inquisitor and poster boy for the rotten fruit of the Republican "Southern Strategy", Rep. Trey "The Deuce" Gowdy (R-Home of Secession).

Repeatedly peppering Comey with questions about the law governing the disclosure of classified information down to the nth degree, Gowdy was doing Rump's bidding in trying to shift the focus from likely felonious and potentially treasonous activity by the Rump campaign (and Rump personally) vis-a-vis the Russian Federation to the individuals who are risking their careers and prison to expose the collusion. Beyond Gowdy's obvious attempts to divert the questioning, there's his rank hypocrisy:

And, with a little snark:
Once again, this hearing is demonstrating that when it comes to their party, Rethuglicans will do anything to save their party's leader from his own behavior:
