The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The good:

The leader of the Texas Democrats chided the state's MAGA-aligned governor on Sunday.

Texas state Democratic Rep. Gene Wu, who chairs the Texas House Democratic Caucus, talked about the redistricting fight occurring in Texas on MSNBC's "The Weekend: Primetime." He described the efforts as a way to distract from much more substantive conversations about the state of American politics.

"They're desperate to talk about anything other than,' Why are you lying, cheating, and stealing from the American people?'" Wu said. "That's the question they don't want to answer. That's the question they want the public to stop asking."

Texas Democrats fled the state to break quorum at the legislature and prevent state Republicans from passing a new election map that would eliminate five Democratic seats. The lawmakers have sought refuge in Illinois.

Texas' Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has threatened to have the Democrats arrested when they return to the state. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has also filed several "nonsense" motions in courts in Illinois and California, Wu said.

"They're going to throw everything they have at us," Wu continued. "Every nonsense thing that they can do in court, they're going to do it."

Wu added that recent public statements from Abbott show the Republican majority in Texas is getting desperate. The Trump administration has been putting pressure on state legislatures to redistrict their maps so the GOP can maintain a majority in Congress following the 2026 primary elections.

"[Abbott] is trying to look tough in a situation where he is getting slammed," Wu said.

Keep punching at these blustering, bluffing fascists!

The bad:

US vice-president JD Vance says Europe must spend more on Ukraine as he warned that America is “done with the funding of the war”. He also vowed that Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky will be forced to meet by Donald Trump.

Mr Vance, in a wide-ranging interview on Fox News, went on to dismiss European leaders’ calls to allow the Ukrainian president to attend the upcoming summit between the US and Russian leaders, insisting that it would not be “productive” at this point.

On Saturday, European leaders including Sir Keir Starmer jointly welcomed the meeting, which is planned for Friday in Alaska. However, they warned that any talks should see Ukraine represented and not permit any land to be ceded to Russia.

Their statement came after Mr Trump admitted the deal may involve “some swapping of territories” – a suggestion Mr Zelensky strongly rejected.

Mr Vance told Fox News that Mr Trump “has to be the one to bring these two together”, before criticising Europe for not “stepping up”.

He said: “What we said to the Europeans is simply: this is in your neck of the woods, this is in your back door. You guys have gotta step up and take a bigger role in this thing. And if you care so much about this conflict, you should be willing to play a more direct and substantial way in funding this war yourself.

“I think the president, and I certainly think that America, we’re done with the funding of the Ukraine war business. We wanna bring about a peaceful settlement of this thing, we wanna stop the killing.”

Mr Vance met with top European and Ukrainian officials at the British foreign secretary's weekend residence on Saturday to discuss how to end the war...

This bearded appendage to Trump's ass pontificating on the future of tens of millions of Ukrainians is just another stain on our country, but it could be life and death for Ukraine.  Signalling retreat from our obligations to a free and independent Ukraine and distancing ourselves from our NATO allies in the face of Putin's imperialist aggression is nothing short of blundering, epic cowardice and submission to a foreign tyrant. What incompetent, short-sighted fools we have at the highest offices.

The ugly:

Half of Republican voters would not abandon their vote for President Donald Trump if he were implicated in Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.

This is according to a new survey conducted by Canadian market research firm Leger, which found that such a revelation wouldn’t sway 47 percent of Republican voters.

Trump has denied being involved in Epstein’s crimes, and no evidence has emerged to suggest otherwise.

A further 26 percent of survey respondents said they were unsure or wouldn’t answer, leaving just 27 percent who said that they would be more likely to vote for another party.

Broken down by demographic, 61 percent of 18-34-year-olds said they would be more likely to vote for another party, while just 15 percent of respondents over 55 said the same.

Previous polling has found that a plurality of Republicans approve of the way Trump has handled the Epstein case...

Well, they voted for a seditionist, convicted felon, and adjudicated sex abuser, didn't they?  Frankly, not surprising given what we know of the MAGA cult personality typology.  Lots of malevolence out there. You are who you vote for.
