Pics Of The Day -- Two At A Time

If you hear some jamokes in the media "just askin'" why VP Harris and Gov. Walz did a joint interview with CNN today instead of her going "solo" (after incessant whining and complaining by said media that she was ignoring them!), recall this composite, and then you'll better understand the utter bad faith and puerile dishonesty that's rampant in Republican- wired American "journalism" today.

(Clockwise, from top left: Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2008; Donald Trump and JD Vance in 2024; Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in 2012; and Trump and Mike Pence in 2016.)

QOTD -- Fascist Enablers

"It’s time to call a fascist a fascist and — speaking of CNN’s upcoming attempt to rehabilitate Trump with a MAGA-mostly-audience “Town Hall” moderated by a reporter who got her start with Tucker Carlson’s Daily Caller [Kaitlan Collins]— it’s time to call fascist enablers exactly what they are, too."-- Thom Hartmann concluding an op/ed on "CNN's attempt to rehabilitate Trump..."  If anyone believed the "mainstream media" learned a lesson from its coverage of the Malignant Loser, from his foul 2016 campaign, to his January 6 coup, up to the present day, where he's often treated as a "normal" candidate and not an existential threat to democracy.  That goes, by the way, for his MAGAt / Christofascist/ Shooters party as well.

Is We Learnin' Journamalism 101?

There was a revealing exchange yesterday between CNN's "media critic" Brian Stelter and the brilliant Russian-born The New Yorker staff writer Masha Gessen while discussing Russian state media's propaganda about their war against Ukraine, and how U.S. media is amplifying their lies using their old "both sides" paradigm. Courtesy of Crooks & Liars TV, here's an excerpt of the exchange after Stelter has just finished repeating the Russian propaganda:

"GESSEN: Brian, what we are doing right now is exactly what Russian propagandists want you to do. Which is amplifying ridiculous messages. Do you not understand?

STELTER: Tell me more.

GESSEN: You know, everything that we hear from Russian official sources, everything that is on Russian TV is a lie, right? This has been documented over and over again. I really don't see why we would go on broadly watched CNN program and try to engage with these lies.  (our emphasis)

Then Stelter attempts to school Gessen in both sides journalism 101, and she's not having it:

STELTER: I think that's really, really interesting and it's exactly what news rooms are wrestling with, including the CNNs of the world, where, you know, think about journalism school 101, right, Masha, you are taught to present both sides, ask for comment, try to be very careful not to jump to conclusions, and yet in this particular situation, in a 21st century information war, where propaganda seems to win the day, some of those journalism 101 rules may have to be revisited. What would you say?

We'd say you're about to get hit with a haymaker dude:

GESSEN: I would say that those are not journalism 101 rules. I think journalism 101 rules are to begin with evaluating your sources and you don't go back over and over again to somebody who has been lying to you.

That is the classic both sidism and classic false equivalency. There is no equivalence between the Ukrainian information sources and Russian information sources. The Ukrainian information sources by and large in the more than 50 days this have war have proven to be largely reliable.

Russia information sources over more than 50 days this have war, and preceding it have proven to be profoundly consistently false. Setting them side-by-side is completely irresponsible. This is not journalism 101, it's the exact opposite of it."  (our emphasis)

Would that our broken Beltway media follow Gessen's critique and be unwilling to share Russian state propaganda, if only to "analyze" it.

BONUS:   Examples of malpractice abound --

Monday Reading

As always, please go to the links for the full articles/ op eds.

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Will Bunch writes about the severe damage wrought by the constant promotion of lies by Fox "News," including the Big Lie, "Biden crack pipes," and the "worse than Watergate" faux Clinton "spying" nothingburger:

For an embattled Donald Trump, the news that scrolled continuously this week across the bottom of America’s most-watched cable news network — the Fox News Channel — could not have come at a more welcome time. The 45th — and hopeful 47th — president had been battered in mainstream outlets over his habit of destroying government documents and the hasty retreat of his business empire’s long-time accounting firm. But those stories weren’t airing on Fox, because its primetime hosts were pushing what they saw as a much bigger scoop.

Calling it “the biggest election and presidential spying scandal in the history of this great country,” Fox News veteran host Sean Hannity went large with a claim that the 2016 Democratic presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton had paid operatives to spy on rival Trump by “infiltrating” his computers at Trump Tower and even at the White House. Hannity’s breathless report on the alleged scandal was backdropped by a graphic calling it “Worse Than Watergate,” while his higher-rated colleague Tucker Carlson went with “Clinton campaign paid to ‘infiltrate’ Trump orbit.”

But these claims were 99% adulterated baloney. The so-called “Hillary spied on Trump” storyline was based on a new court filing by federal prosecutor John Durham, who was tasked by then-Attorney General William Barr during the Trump years to investigate their theory that the Trump-Russia probe was rife with official misconduct — and who has little to show for his work so far.

It always seems they come up with the most fabulous bullshit just when their cult leader is in the greatest peril.  Coincidence no doubt.  (We would note Fox "News'" fabricating fascists have backed off the Clinton tale after she threatened them with a malicious defamation lawsuit.)

Bunch goes on to explain why this firehose of falsehoods pumped into the heads of millions of gullible Americans every day is a precursor to installing an autocratic, anti- democratic regime that practices just this kind of thought control.

Thomas Lecaque at Religion Dispatches has an alarming look at the Christofascist "Jericho Marches," their role in the recent Canadian trucker Freedumb Convoy, and their participation in insurrection movements here and worldwide:

Jericho Marches are organized by a group by the same name. They were created by a coalition of Christian nationalists in the US. They are co-led by a Catholic think-tank writer, Arina Grossu of the Family Research Council, and an evangelical businessman, Rob Weaver.

The Jericho Marches rose to prominence recently. Supporters have been marching around the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa for around 20 days. They are, for Americans, a gothic reminder of what had been brewing in the lead up to the J6 sacking and looting of the US Capitol. [snip]

Jericho March, the group, is one of the religious groups, movements and ideologies at play in the insurrection. The Uncivil Religion project has uncovered a bevy of beliefs. The Jericho Marches, however, were the principal symbol of J6 and the Christian nationalism at its heart, not only in DC but at state capitols around the country.

Christian nationalism is a religious idea that transcends borders, attracting a lot of support from like-minded insurrectionists abroad.

Last year, when journalist Emma Green wrote “A Christian Insurrection” for The Atlantic, it was subtitled, “Many of those who mobbed the Capitol on Wednesday claimed to be enacting God’s will,”while the CBC Investigates’ piece on the Ottawa convoy this week is titled, “For many inside the Freedom Convoy, faith fuels the resistance.”

The links are quite clear between groupings. And now, organizing in small groups and marching around Parliament, is a new Jericho March.

He concludes:

The elements of spiritual warfare—repeatedly deployed by Christian nationalist groups before in service of Trump and elsewhere—on the borderline of where it crosses over into physical violence, the Jericho Marches, the violent commentary supporting it, the prayer, the shofars, the echoes of J6 expressed from abroad and divorced from the actual Canadian context—these are a symptom of a broader problem.

Illiberalism is growing. The variant around Trump—conspiracy-laden, seditionist, Christian nationalist—is getting stronger by the minute.

Last year, it was in Washington.

This year, Ottawa.

Next year? We should worry.

We should go beyond worry and prepare to engage and counteract.

Sasha Abramsky writed in The Nation about how the far right is targeting schools and education policy, and crime rates, to draw people to its side (and to the ballot box), sometimes with help from progressives:

Right-wing organizers regard schools both as epicenters of political battles and as arenas that draw more people into the wider conservative orbit. At times, so-called progressives have made life much easier for the conservatives in this task; witness the blithering stupid actions of the San Francisco school board over the past couple of years: debating name changes to several dozen schools instead of working to get students safely back into classrooms during the pandemic, and, with only a minimum of public comment and input, gutting the school system’s gifted program by introducing a lottery for entry into those supposedly selective schools—which resulted in this week’s recall of three school board members. In one of the country’s most liberal cities, the result wasn’t close: 70 percent of those who cast ballots voted yes on the recall question.

Which brings me to a larger point: Right-wing organizers are showing themselves to be rather talented at harvesting popular resentment and/or fears to tarnish the entire progressive agenda. And, unfortunately, at times these days progressives are giving them ample fodder. Yes, the anti-CRT effort is both disingenuous and often laced with racist undertones; but when San Francisco school board members behave like caricatures, they provide grist to the conservative mill.

Abramsky also discusses crime and criminal justice as another front in the emerging battle, where the right has been on the offensive:

The right has gotten criminal justice wrong for decades. They have preached punishment over rehabilitation, and promoted violent, coercive institutions as a default response to all the societal problems that lead to crime. Their solutions tend to be nonsolutions, but they do come across as “tough”—and thus viable—to a scared public.

Progressives can’t afford to ignore the rising fear that accompanies rising crime; nor can they, or should they, wash their hands of the problem of a bloated criminal justice system simply by releasing thousands of people onto the streets and into homeless encampments without wraparound, and, if need be, mandatory, services.

It's a fair and pointed critique that progressive would do well to heed now rather than later.

So you think CNN has problems now?  Clare Malone at The New Yorker thinks you may want to fasten your seatbelts for what may be coming following a merger later this year between WarnerMedia and Discovery, with its far- right" libertarian" billionaire mega shareholder John Malone (no relation to the writer):

There are also concerns at CNN about Malone’s potential influence on the network’s editorial tone, which, during the Trump years, centered opinion in prime time more than it ever had. Some at the network have argued that the Trump Presidency and its assault on fact and the press necessitated that change in tone and emphasis. A few months ago, in another interview with CNBC, Malone said, “I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with and actually have journalists—which would be unique and refreshing.” CNN’s chief media correspondent, Brian Stelter, interpreted the remark ominously, writing, “Malone’s comments stoked fears that Discovery might stifle CNN journalists and steer away from calling out indecency and injustice.” Malone once praised Rush Limbaugh for his willingness “to say politically incorrect things” and told Ken Auletta, in the 1994 New Yorker Profile, that he and his wife were “not socialistic.”

Smear Of CNN Busted

Apparently, there was at least one parent of a Marjory Stoneman Douglas student who was willing to use the massacre to smear CNN in service of pushing an NRA/ Trump talking point. Looks like someone got caught lying:
CNN released emails from a network producer on Friday that appear to contradict a Florida high school student's claim that the network scripted a question that he was supposed to ask at a televised town hall event this week.
Colton Haab, a survivor of last week's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., said Thursday on Fox News that CNN had initially asked him to "write a speech and ask questions” for the event but that a producer ultimately scripted a question for him. CNN has denied that claim.
According to Business Insider, CNN and Haab agreed on the question that he would ask at the town hall. His father, Glenn Haab, pulled his son out of the event after the network refused to let the student read a lengthy speech at the event.
The Haabs' also appeared to provide doctored emails to media outlets to back up the claim that CNN scripted the questions, Business Insider reported. CNN's version of the email showed that the producer wrote she wanted the student to stick to a question "that he submitted," but that phrase was omitted in the version released by the family. (our emphasis)
Apparently, the "speech" that CNN actually told young Haab not to give was an elaboration on the statement/ question Haab had submitted himself, and which was to be directed to Florida Democratic Senator Bill Nelson. The statement/ question was,
"Senator Nelson, if Coach Feis had had his firearm in the school that day, I believe that he could have most likely stopped the threat. Have we thought about having a class for teachers who are willing to be armed trained (sic) to carry on campus?" (our emphasis)
Does that idea sound familiar?

Hmmm. The NRA works fast, doesn't it?  Sounds like they got their talking points to Daddy Haab, then he got his son on Fox "News" to smear CNN and the whole movement being led by young Haab's more woke fellow students.

But, hey, mission accomplished!  The intent was to get the smear out there to undercut a legitimate news source and the student movement, and at least one sleazy nitwit was happy to catapult the bullshit far and wide:

Deranged Twit Tweets, Cont. (UPDATED)

Another morning, another bizarre, threatening tweet from the Man-Baby "president":

CNN responds:

Steve M. provides some background on where Man- Baby got the video (via Mock Paper Scissors):

"HanAssholeSolo." Are we certain that's not Man- Baby's Reddit handle? It certainly fits.

UPDATE:  Steve M. provides more of the deep thoughts by "HanAssholeSolo," the Reddit user Rump got his inspiration from.

Tweet Of The Day - Lewandowski's New Gig

It's all about ratings.  Not a scruple among the lot of them.  Perfect match.  Oh, and the next time a reporter gets manhandled at a Rump event, don't look to us for sympathy.

BONUS: We suppose that the clowns at CNN did due diligence and know that Lewandowski is bound by a confidentiality agreement with Rump not to discuss him or his campaign. D'oh!

See Journalism Being Committed

The Washington Post is at it again, committing... journalism:
Just two days after Donald Trump implied that President Obama sympathized with terrorists, provoking a backlash that included members of his own party, the presumed Republican presidential nominee declared himself “right,” based on a published report claiming administration “support” for the Islamic State.
The [Breitbart - lol] story was based on a declassified 2012 cable written by a Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) official, addressed to about two dozen military and national security agencies and officials, including then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Labeled as “information report, not finally evaluated intelligence,” it refers to “the general situation” in Iraq and Syria in the early days of the armed insurgency against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
It describes al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), the Islamic State precursor, as part of the anti-Assad opposition, and notes that opposition forces fighting in eastern Syria are backed by “Western countries, the [Persian] Gulf states and Turkey.”
But the document appears to be an initial intake of spot intelligence from the early days of the Syrian civil war. That intelligence had not yet been vetted or verified. Trump’s embrace of Breitbart’s interpretation of the cable fits a pattern of careless handling and circulation of facts, particularly in the realm of foreign policy. Such missteps have piqued concerns among foreign policy experts and Republican strategists about Trump’s understanding of complicated policy issues and his fitness for office.  (our emphasis)
The Post's Fact Checker also looked into this debunked Breitbart/ Judicial Watch (lol) bit of ratf*cking and rated it "4 Pinocchios."

This follows on a pattern we noticed the other day:  that the Post is now clearly characterizing neo- fascist nitwit Donald "Rump" Trump's (a.k.a., Cheeto Jesus) statements as, shall we say, divorced from reality.  Some media outlets occasionally adopt a similar approach to debunking the dangerous lies and fear- mongering coming from Cheeto Jesus (here's CNN's Jake Tapper, for example), but turning around the decades- long media tradition of anodyne "both siderism"/ "he said, she said" is not going to come easily.  Perhaps the clear and present danger of a Trump presidency is serving to clear the minds of these "journalists."

Be Afraid! Be Very Afraid!

That was the message from both the lightweight Republicans in the candidate clown car bus and their enablers at CNN during last night's undercard and main "debates."  Since we have to hold on to every one of our precious brain cells, we didn't watch the spectacle, leaving it to others to describe The Horror!
The candidates spent much of Tuesday's debates talking about ISIS and Islamic terrorism. Other threats, including gun violence, climate change and domestic terror carried out by white extremists -- all of which kill more Americans at home than jihadists -- were ignored. If the point of Islamic extremist terrorism is to make people terrified, Tuesday's debate was proof that it's working.

The debate hosts didn't help. CNN opened the prime-time contest with a Michael Bay-esque graphics package that featured a movie-trailer-style announcer proclaiming that the presidential race was taking a "critical turn, with terror fears front and center" and clips of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and angry clown Donald Trump talking about terrorism -- all over action-movie music.
That these armchair Pattons would be continuing to rile the dimwits in their base with tuff talk about Mooslims is no surprise at all.  They've been in that business, with one boogeyman or another, for over 40 years.  And now it should no longer be a surprise that CNN is actively pumping up that shameful Republican narrative.  As no less an observer than (Sir) Charles Barkley has observed, CNN has "sold its soul" in pursuit of ratings and profits.

Who else profits from this narrative?  Who will claim that there's a war on Islam being waged by America?  Who will use this over- heated rhetoric as a recruiting tool?

This counterproductive stupidity is dangerous to all of us, and the fact that a major news organization (other than Fox "News") is fanning the flames of stupidity for its ratings is downright disgusting.

BONUS: Simon Maloy expands on the "fear cauldron" that was the Republican debate, from an unhinged opening statement by desperate Gov. Chris "Krispykreme" Christie, to the dust up between the Cubano Gusanos, smarmy Sen. "Tailgunner" Ted Cruz and slippery Sen. Marco "Glug Glug" Rubio over metadata collection and immigration.

BONUS II:  Here's just one list of some of the lies and distortions (unchallenged by CNN) in last night's debate.

BONUS III:   A wingnut civil war broke out on Twitter during the "debate," including some tweets from that Iowa twit Steve "Douchebag" Deace.  Hahahaha.

BONUS IV:  Andy Borowitz nails it.

CNN's "Breaking Up-To-The-Minute Fan Fiction" About Joe Biden

As we and others have noted, the people wanting Joe Biden in the Democratic race are mostly 1) people who want something from Biden,  2) Republicans, 3) Clinton haters, and 4) the media (some overlap with #2 and #3).  Here's the great Stephen Colbert's treatment of CNN's inane, hyperventilating coverage (they're all but begging him to show up at the debate tonight):

"Bigfoot Hillary" And Other Rancid Media Memes You Should Start Getting Used To

It's pretty much a given, as we noted the other day, that the "mainstream media" has its biases against Hillary Clinton, some dating back six years, some going back to the Clinton Administration. Kathleen Reardon, professor emerita at USC Marshall School, points to one example of what we're likely to get from "journalists" (in this case, CNN's Gloria Borger) who traffic in hearsay, innuendo, manufactured "narratives," Republican talking points, and sniping:
One of CNN's commentators and a committed Clinton detractor during the 2008 election campaign, Gloria Borger, recently wrote that Democrats have no choice but to defend Hillary Clinton on issues like the email question because she is "their putative nominee." She quoted an unnamed, supposed "Democratic strategist" to "support" the view that Democrats are stuck with Clinton - like it or not.
Referring to Clinton as "Bigfoot Hillary," Borger proposed that there is no one of substance in the Democratic field (dismissing three impressive potential contenders). Borger concludes that should Clinton stumble, the party is in big trouble. Referring to the email matter, she added:
Those Democrats who want to defend her say there's a problem -- they're not quite sure what they're defending, because they're not sure exactly what happened, or why. In other words, the wagons are circled, but the surrogates are left outside.
This is the level of journalism to which we've become accustomed -- baseless sniping at selected candidates. Who are these Democrats? How does Borger know they're unsure? Whose wagons are circled? How about some expert testimony from named sources?
Leaving aside the ostensibly professional print media and Fox "News," which can both be trusted to take us back over every b.s. moment of the Clinton presidency as well as Benghazi!!!, CNN used to be "the most trusted name in news."  No more. With people like Borger who have an infotainment agenda or axes to grind sprinkled throughout the organization, it's not likely CNN will find that trust back anytime soon, and certainly not when there's a target like Hillary Clinton to try to take down.

UPDATE:  And this is why Republicans and their Clinton-hating stenographers in the media are so desperate to bring her down a few notches:
Hillary Clinton is one of a few potential 2016 presidential candidates to have a significantly higher favorable (50%) than unfavorable (39%) rating among the American public. And the 89% of Americans who are familiar enough with Clinton to have an opinion of her is more than any other potential 2016 presidential candidate. Clinton's relatively high scores on both dimensions give her a better starting position regarding her image than other competitors would have in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Another Blind Squirrel Finds An Acorn

"[T]he Republican Party is being run out of News Corp. headquarters masquerading as a cable news channel."  -  CNN President Jeff Zucker, at a news conference Friday, responding to Fox "News' " Roger "Jabba the Nut" Ailes' assertion that CNN was "out of the news business."

"Tippy" Tapper's Dismal Ratings

Former ABC, now CNN talking "head" Jake "Tippy" Tapper saw ratings for his new show, "The Lead," on CNN plummet from the predecessor show "The Situation Room" (with Wolf "The Situation" Blitzer ? hee-hee).  Tippy is best known here for his inability to perceive "sister organization" Fox "News" as a propaganda arm of the Rethuglican/ New Confederate/ Stupid Party. *

Perhaps we were mispronouncing the name of Tippy's show;  rather than "lead" as in "the main point of the story", it's supposed to be "lead" as in "sinking like a lead balloon."

* Here's Jen Sorensen's take at the time, with names changed to protect the innocent idiots (click to enlarge):

This Just In. . . .

Check the caption above. CNN plays this like there's a "on the one hand, on the other hand" validity to right-wing nuttery. Sad to say, the White House is a participant.

Huzzah! It's An Insurrection!

When RedState asswhistle Erick "The Loon" Erickson was hired as the newest crown jewel in the CNN firmament (as a pundit on the John King show, a show that "nobody watches except his relatives"), many of us saw it as yet another sign of the death of the cable "news" media. Well, in an effort to continue documenting the egregious nature of CNN's mistake, Roy Edroso blogs on The Loon's overheated rantings about recent tea- bagger- led purges -- nay, The Loon calls them "insurrections" (hee hee, he said "erections")! Forsooth, check it out!

Fux Lite

CNN, in its effort to remake itself as "Fux Lite," recently hired wingnut blogger Erick "Erick the Loon" Erickson. He's the rage-meister behind the far right-wing RedState blog, and his hate speech is well documented. Despite that, CNN has hired Erick the Loon as a commentator/analyst, appearing regularly on the execrable "John King, USA" show. Media Matters has Erick the Loon's most recent outrage, where he threatens to confront a Census worker with a shotgun.

It's not surprising that CNN is flailing around for a new winger identity: their viewership of their prime time programs has dropped dramatically in the past few months, apparently losing audience to the Fuxers.

Take the Money. . . .Please!

Former CNN gasbag Loopy Lou Dobbs was apparently paid a cool $8 million by CNN just to leave the network. Loopy Lou's increasingly bizarre show, which must have spent 90% of its time bashing illegal immigrants (when only 1 or 2% of the population thought it was a major issue) over the past few years, was an embarrassment to CNN. Loopy's recent rants were about the President's birth certificate and the "socialist" agenda of Obama (who'll someday get credit for rescuing the financial market, GM and our free market economy in general).

Loopy Lou is going to be on Bill O'Liely's smearfest on Fux tonight, so he's probably auditioning for a spot in the Fux Channel's lineup. We think he'd work well as an Ed McMahon-type sidekick for Boo Hoo Beck: "And now, heeeeeerrrres Boo Hoo!!"

The Most Trusted Name In Spin

To no one's great surprise, CNN failed to disclose CNN political "analyst" and Rethug operative Alex "Cash or Check?" Castellanos' ties to the health insurance lobby organization America' Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). Cash or Check's company has been buying media time for AHIP's ads trying to scuttle health insurance reform and maintain the status quo.

CNN says it will disclose Cash or Check's connections to the health insurance industry in the future. Excellent!! He's been "commenting" on health insurance reform issues for months without having to disclose his affiliation, and only now CNN fesses up. Hey, we already have Fuxed News, we don't need Fuxed Lite.

(photo: Cash or Check Castellanos displays the thumb that he had CNN sit and spin on)
