Good Poll Numbers for Obama

A new Washington Post / ABC News poll shows President Obama with double-digit leads over presumed Rethuglican nominee and humanoid replica Willard "Marvelous Mittens" Romney on several key issues: who would protect the interests of the middle class, who is stronger on womens' issues, who would handle international relations better, and who is right on health care. The President also beats Marvelous Mittens by 19 points among women voters, which, if the number holds firm, could doom him in November. The poll shows much closer numbers on questions of jobs and the economy, as expected.

Then there's the likeability factor, the "who would you rather have a beer with?" question. On that, the President wallops Marvelous Mittens by a 2 to 1 margin. The more Mittens tries to be someone that he's not, the more the public sees his lack of a core, and sees his phoniness.

Good Numbers for the President

The latest CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll has President Obama leading his two most likely Rethuglican opponents by double digits. Obama leads Transvaginal Traveler Rick "Frothy Mix" Santorum by 13 points (55 - 42), and leads plutocrat prevaricator Willard "Sketchy" Romney by 11 points (54 - 43).

Polls fluctuate from day to day, and we're months away from November. There'll be massive negative ads against the President by the corporate right, so the spread will surely narrow. But for now, the majority of voters are giving the President their vote of confidence.

Bad Numbers For The Party Of No

Research 2000's latest polling has some pretty bad news for the Rethugs (cue the sound of champagne corks popping). The Rethug Party only has a 25 percent positive rating, vs. 49 percent for the Democratic Party. President Obama has a 67 percent favorable rating, compared to Congressional Rethug "leaders" Sen. Mitch "Missy" McConnell (22 ) and Rep. John "Boner" Boehner (16). You can't fool all of the people all of the time.

Yet, as we noted in yesterday's posting, the Beltway media continues to treat the Rethugs as having "serious" ideas that are worth discussing and even enacting. The American public is saying "no sale" and the Rethugs are still rehashing their familiar, failed bromides -- tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, cut or eliminate Medicare and Medicaid, privatize Social Security, and give money to the Pentagon that they haven't even asked for.

Even worse news for the Party of No, the House and Senate have passed President's Obama's FY 2010 budget by solid margins -- with no Rethuglican votes.

Some Stats for the Rethugs

It looks like the Rethug strategy of lining up behind Dear Leader Limpballs has been a smashing success! New polls show that Limpballs is regarded "very, very negatively" by 45% of the American public (with independent voters, the voters Rethugs need to win, it's a fatal 3-1 against Limpballs).

That's bad enough, but now Rethug National Committee chairman Michael "Tin Man" Steele opines that "bipartisanship is a fiction of politics." Wooo, that's the hip hop style, baby! "You be da man, Michael Steele!" as racist winger Michelle "I See Commies Everywhere" Bachman would say. Problem is, it doesn't go down with the general public. You know, the people that elections are won with.

If The Election Were Held Today. . . .

CNN's electoral map says that Sen. Obama would have more than the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. The key state that's moved into Obama's column is Virginia, where multiple polls are showing him with a double digit lead.

It's way too early to break out the champagne. The McAngry campaign and their loathsome allies in hate radio and the wingnut blog world will be doing everything they can to lie, cheat, and steal their way to reverse the trend. They can't talk honestly about the economy, because of their complicity in creating the mess we're in, so they have to distract and deceive. It's in their political genes.

Some Good News

The latest Newsweek national poll has Sen. Obama with a 15-point lead over Sen. John McBush, 51-36. It's way too early to think that these numbers will hold - - especially once the Rethug smear machine gets into full gear - - but it shows that a lot of Sen. Clinton's supporters and independents are realizing that they can't afford another 4 years of the same policies.

Mr. 28 Percent

Gallup's latest poll puts Preznit Chimpy at 28% approval, the lowest of his sorry Assministration. He's managed a 60 point drop since his high point after 9-11.

For the Preznit and his boss, Dead-Eye Dick Cheney, public opinion is of no concern. We remember Dead-Eye's response recently in an ABC News interview when asked about the public's disapproval of the war: "So?"

Wrong Track

The New York Times cites a poll that has been taken since the early 1990s, asking whether the country is on the right track or the wrong track. Some 81% now say we're on the wrong track, the highest percent recorded, up from 69% a year ago. With the economy faltering, and the war in Iraq continuing, the public's mood is especially sour. According to the article, "the unhappiness presents clear risks for Republicans in this year's elections, given the continued unpopularity of President Bush."

Wish we could get Dumbya out to start campaigning daily for Sen. McSame.

Public Opinion: Get Out Of Iraq

Since the surge started earlier this year, the Assministration, when they're not asking for more time, are pointing to reductions in violence. But remember the whole purpose of the surge was to give the Iraqi government "breathing space" to work out political and economic problems. That hasn't been done. Sunni tribes in Anbar province have decided to work with our military and receive arms and supplies in return; the Mahdi Army has infiltrated Iraqi security forces and are in a self-imposed ceasefire. The civil war has just gone into a dormant stage, it hasn't gone away.

Meanwhile, 54 percent of the public want us out of Iraq, a level unchanged from last February. The question, as former Rethug Representative Vin Weber says in the article, is not whether we're "winning or losing", but whether it was worth it. And, as Weber says, the public decided that question some time ago.
