Racists Gather At Gettysburg Battlefield
With more cities and states taking down memorials to the treason-in-defense-of-slavery Confederacy, and with the Confederate battle rag being consigned to the lawns of mouthbreathing bigots, we should expect the kind of threatening reaction by hate groups that was exhibited this past weekend on the Gettysburg battlefield. A motley collection of KKK members, right-wing militia types, and freelance racists, including many Trump supporters, gathered at the Gettysburg battlefield, many armed and wearing camo and bulletproof vests. The gathering was ostensibly to "protect" Confederate monuments from "desecration" by the anti-fascist group Antifa, but turned out to to have been largely an excuse to swill beer, shout racist slogans and vent their rage against "libruls." (Antifa says that no such action was ever planned.) Fittingly, one of the nitwits even managed to shoot himself in the leg, because... nitwit.
After the murder of nine African-American parishioners in a Charleston, SC church by Confederate rag-waving racist Dylann Roof in June 2015, an increasing number of jurisdictions have taken action to remove symbols of the racist Confederacy. Those actions have provoked a reaction from racist groups often using the cover of protecting their "heritage," but who want to revive it in a reactionary political sense through undermining voting rights and laws discriminating against minorities. With an ally in the White (Supremacist) House, not to mention much of Congress, these twisted cretins feel emboldened, and they won't be easily or quickly defeated.

Across The Universe, Cont. - A Composite Goulash

From NASA, June 26, 2017: What would happen if you took two galaxies and mixed them together over millions of years? A new image including data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory reveals the cosmic culinary outcome.
Arp 299 is a system located about 140 million light years from Earth. It contains two galaxies that are merging, creating a partially blended mix of stars from each galaxy in the process.
However, this stellar mix is not the only ingredient. New data from Chandra reveals 25 bright X-ray sources sprinkled throughout the Arp 299 concoction. Fourteen of these sources are such strong emitters of X-rays that astronomers categorize them as “ultra-luminous X-ray sources,” or ULXs.
These ULXs are found embedded in regions where stars are currently forming at a rapid rate. Most likely, the ULXs are binary systems where a neutron star or black hole is pulling matter away from a companion star that is much more massive than the Sun. These double star systems are called high-mass X-ray binaries.
Such a loaded buffet of high-mass X-ray binaries is rare, but Arp 299 is one of the most powerful star-forming galaxies in the nearby Universe. This is due at least in part to the merger of the two galaxies, which has triggered waves of star formation. The formation of high-mass X-ray binaries is a natural consequence of such blossoming star birth as some of the young massive stars, which often form in pairs, evolve into these systems.
This new composite image of Arp 299 contains X-ray data from Chandra (pink), higher-energy X-ray data from NuSTAR (purple), and optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope (white and faint brown). Arp 299 also emits copious amounts of infrared light that has been detected by observatories such as NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, but those data are not included in this composite.
The infrared and X-ray emission of the galaxy is remarkably similar to that of galaxies found in the very distant Universe, offering an opportunity to study a relatively nearby analog of these distant objects. A higher rate of galaxy collisions occurred when the universe was young, but these objects are difficult to study directly because they are located at colossal distances.
The Chandra data also reveal diffuse X-ray emission from hot gas distributed throughout Arp 299. Scientists think the high rate of supernovas, another common trait of star-forming galaxies, has expelled much of this hot gas out of the center of the system.
A paper describing these results appeared in the Aug. 21 issue of the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and is available online. The lead author of the paper is Konstantina Anastasopoulou from the University of Crete in Greece. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, manages the Chandra program for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, controls Chandra’s science and flight operations.

"He's Going To Get Somebody Killed"
The tweet by the dangerously unbalanced demagogue Donald "Rump" Trump (see post below) prompted this impassioned reply on ABC's This Week by Republican consultant and CNN analyst Anna Navarro:
We hope she's wrong when she says that this unstable man-baby will get someone in the media killed, but with Stormtrumpers hanging on every word of their Dear Leader, it's entirely possible. This is something that the press and public needs to stand united with CNN on now, because if he hasn't already, he'll be coming after you. #Resist.

Sunday Reflection
Fifty- three years ago today, President Lyndon Johnson signed the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. It's aim:
An Act
To enforce the constitutional right to vote, to confer jurisdiction upon the district courts of the United States to provide injunctive relief against discrimination in public accommodations, to authorize the Attorney General to institute suits to protect constitutional rights in public facilities and public education, to extend the Commission on Civil Rights, to prevent discrimination in federally assisted programs, to establish a Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity, and for other purposes.Today, we have a corrupt, reactionary regime working to roll back those protections, including a presidential commission working actively to curtail voting rights.
The struggle is never over. Resist.
BONUS: Here's more on the act's background and where we are now.

Drip, Drip, Drip
Here's TPM's Josh Marshall outlining the Journal's reporting, with added information/ corroboration from British cybersecurity expert Matt Tait (which we're excerpting - please go to the TPM link for the full article):
As you may have heard, this evening The Wall Street Journal published a major follow-up to its story from Thursday which described the work of a GOP money man and oppo research guy, the late Peter W. Smith, who was trying to get hacked emails from Russia and held himself out to be in contact with disgraced Trump advisor Michael Flynn. On its face, the big new break in this follow-up story is a new document from Smith. The document is from what is described as a package of recruiting materials Smith was using to enlist cybersecurity talent in his operation. The document listed key officials in the Trump campaign. These were apparently people Smith claimed he was in touch with or working with, though precisely how or why they were mentioned is not entirely clear.
Here’s the key passage from the Journal article …
Officials identified in the document include Steve Bannon, now chief strategist for President Donald Trump; Kellyanne Conway, former campaign manager and now White House counselor; Sam Clovis, a policy adviser to the Trump campaign and now a senior adviser at the Agriculture Department; and retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, who was a campaign adviser and briefly was national security adviser in the Trump administration.
[snip]
What is also clear in the Journal article is that the source of the new information was almost certainly a British national and cybersecurity expert named Matt Tait. I would go through why this seems clear. But about an hour after the Journal article was published, Tait himself followed up with what I would say is the big piece of the night in the Lawfare blog.
Tait provides a much more detailed first-person account of his dealings with Smith. You’ll want to read it yourself. But the gist is that he’s a cybersecurity expert, he got press attention with some online analysis he did about the DNC hacking. He later got contacted by Smith – apparently because Smith was looking for someone to authenticate purported, hacked Clinton emails he’d been offered. Tait didn’t at first know just what Smith was after or who he was. But once he got into a conversation with Smith and found out someone was offering him the Clinton emails, he wanted to know more.
One critical part of the story is that Tait never saw the purported emails, genuine or not. So he is not in a position to say what they were or who was offering them to Smith.
The critical points Tait reveals are these. 1) That in his conversations with Smith and his associates it was clear that they did not care if the sources of the emails were Russian intelligence officers or if the emails had been hacked by Russian intelligence. They were entirely indifferent to this reality. They didn’t care. 2) Smith discussed what seemed to be highly detailed and confidential information about the inner workings of the Trump campaign, details that made Tait think that Smith wasn’t just some name dropper freelancing but actually had deep ties into the campaign and especially with Mike Flynn. (our emphasis)Marshall's article contains a number of revealing quotes from Tait; we would encourage you to go to Tait's Lawfare article here to get the full flavor of his account.
Also, while the octogenarian Smith died hours after the Journal spoke to him (hmmm), Smith's associate John Szobocsan is -- at the moment -- alive and is presumably on Robert Mueller's radar, if not under some form of protection.
These drips are getting bigger and closer together all the time.

Trump-Putin Meeting Poses Serious Risks
The G20 meeting in Hamburg, Germany next week is promising to be one that stands out from recent gatherings of the world's economic powers. For one thing, this is the first meeting that the U.S. will be represented by neo-fascist Putin toady Donald "Rump" Trump, and the first one after a U.S. president symbolically transferred the leadership of the free world to another leader: Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany. Withdrawal from the Paris climate accords, showing lukewarm support for NATO, and pushing a nationalistic, "America First" trade agenda -- not to mention Rump's corrosive character and arrogant, bullying personality -- sealed the transfer in the minds of many.
What's also different about this meeting is that it will be Rump's first official meeting with Russian autocrat and election manipulator Vladimir "Vlad the Invader" Putin. Apparently, that has not only our allies worried, but also our national security establishment, who want to avoid at all costs a private meeting between the two without senior aides present. Already, there are indications that Rump wants to make nice with Putin, whom he has flattered effusively and whose meddling helped Rump in the 2016 elections. Rump has asked his national security staff to come up with concessions to Putin, who has yet to cease his military actions in Ukraine or return Crimea to Ukraine. Reportedly under consideration is the return of the two Russian "diplomatic" compounds in Maryland and New York that served as espionage centers, which were closed by President Obama following Moscow's interference in the elections. Our European allies are concerned that the experienced and well-prepared Putin will easily outmaneuver the ignorant, unprepared and reckless Rump, and extract concessions without giving anything in return. Says Brookings Institution's Thomas Wright:
“There’s definitely some anxiety overseas. They are worried about a deal that may be struck in the meeting on the fly. Putin is very good at these first meetings. He has an agenda and knows how to maneuver people. If Trump isn’t prepared, the longer he stays in the room, the more dangerous it is.”This is why Congress needs to move the Russia sanctions legislation to Rump's desk, and after he vetoes it, pass it over his veto into law.
Malignant Presidency Quote of the Day
"We're in foreign territory. We have never been in a malignant presidency like this before. It calls on our leaders, it calls on our journalists to do a different kind of reporting, a different kind of dealing with this presidency and the President....I think something much greater is happening, and that is that we are in the midst of a malignant presidency. That malignancy is known to the military leaders of the country. It's known to the Republican leadership in Congress who recognize it, and it's known to the intelligence community." (emphasis added) -- journalistic icon Carl Bernstein on CNN, referring to the dysfunctional, vindictive, pathologically dishonest and corrupt presidency of unstable Donald "Rump" Trump. Having been a key observer of Richard Nixon's criminal presidency, Bernstein's assessment is even more important to understand the gravity of the problem.
