Is Scott Pruitt's Toxic EPA Tenure About To End?

No less an expert in scandals than former New Jersey Gov. Chris "Krispycreme" Christie opined on the fate of EPA Administrator mortician Scott "Swamp Thang" Pruitt after only his most recent ethical/ legal fail:
CHRISTIE: Listen, I don't know how you survive this one. And if he has to go, it's because he never should have been there in the first place.
"[T]his one" refers to Swamp Thang's sweetheart Capitol Hill townhouse rental from the wife of a lobbyist for the only liquefied natural gas plant in the U.S.  Liquefied natural gas is odorless, so what's that smell, you ask:
[T]he first sign of trouble came when Pruitt took a first-class trip to Morocco late last year – it cost $40,000 and you paid for it – in order to have the EPA chief pitch “the potential benefit of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports on Morocco’s economy.”
Why the head of the EPA would make economic energy recommendations to foreign countries was unclear. The answer, however, soon after seemed to come into focus.

The only LNG export plant in the country hired a lobbyist, and Scott Pruitt lived in a Capitol Hill condo – for $50 a night, far below market value – in the Capitol Hill home owned by the lobbyist’s wife. (our emphasis)
Someone posing as an "ethics" official at EPA has said this was all above board because, yes, if you pro rated the $50 across a 30- day month, it would have been $1,500 -- "fair market rate!" * That may seem like a princely sum to most, but on Capitol Hill, that wouldn't be fair market rate for a doghouse (fleas negotiable).  Here's a pic of the place that could be had for $50 a day, if you're an EPA Administrator willing to shill for your landlady's husband's business:

(via ABC News)

Swamp Thang is nothing if not a serial abuser. Media Matters has a helpful timeline of Pruitt's scandals prior to to rentgate.  Here are a few lowlights:
February 24, 2017, KOKH: Pruitt lied to senators about his use of a private email account. An investigation by Oklahoma City Fox affiliate KOKH revealed that Pruitt lied during his Senate confirmation hearing when he said he did not use a private email account to conduct official business while he was attorney general of Oklahoma, a finding later confirmed by the office of the attorney general. The Oklahoma Bar Association subsequently opened an investigation into the matter, which could lead to Pruitt being disbarred in the state of Oklahoma. [snip]
August 28, 2017, E&E News: Pruitt gave a Superfund job to a failed banker whose bank had given loans to Pruitt. In May, Pruitt appointed Albert “Kell” Kelly to head a task force on the EPA’s Superfund program, even though Kelly had been fined $125,000 by federal banking regulators and banned for life from banking activity because of misdeeds committed when he was CEO of Oklahoma-based SpiritBank. Kelly had no previous experience working on environmental issues and, as ThinkProgress reported in February 2018, he had a financial stake in Phillips 66, an oil company that the EPA had deemed responsible for contaminating areas in Louisiana and Oregon. In previous years, Kelly’s bank had given a loan to Pruitt to purchase a share in a minor league baseball team and provided acquisition financing when the team was sold. The bank had also provided three mortgage loans to Pruitt and his wife, as The Intercept reported in December. [snip]
September 26, 2017, Wash. Post: Pruitt spent almost $25,000 on a private soundproof booth. The EPA spent nearly $25,000 to construct a secure, soundproof communications booth in Pruitt’s office, even though there was another such booth on a different floor at EPA headquarters. No previous EPA administrators had such a setup, the Post reported. UPDATE: On March 14, the Post reported that the EPA spent more than $18,000 on the prep work required to install Pruitt’s booth, which put the booth’s total cost “closer to $43,000.” [snip]
February 11, 2018, Wash. Post: Pruitt spent $90,000 on first-class flights and other travel in a single week. During a stretch in early June, Pruitt racked up at least $90,000 in taxpayer-funded travel costs, including first-class, business-class, and military flights. The figure did not include the cost of Pruitt’s round-the-clock security detail accompanying him on those trips. One first-class flight was for an overnight trip to New York, where Pruitt made two media appearances to praise Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris agreement. According to the Post, “[EPA] records show that wherever Pruitt’s schedule takes him, he often flies first or business class, citing unspecified security concerns.” The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Trey Gowdy (R-SC), demanded documentation and explanation for Pruitt’s first- and business-class work travel, but Pruitt missed the chairman’s March 6 deadline to turn over documents.
February 13, 2018, CBS News: Pruitt flew luxury business class on a foreign airline. Pruitt broke with government rules requiring employees to fly on U.S. carriers. He got a waiver to return home from Milan, Italy, in June on Emirates Airline in what CBS described as “one of the world’s most luxurious business class cabins.”
And that's only a small sample of what Swamp Thang has been up to, mis- using taxpayer dollars, gutting environmental laws and regulations, all the while selling himself (and us) to the highest bidder.  He'd have been "locked up" long ago in a "normal" administration. But, in President Spanky's, he's par for the course.

(* As friend P.E.C. clarifies in the comments, Swamp Thang only paid the $50 on nights he spent in the townhouse - such a deal!)

Republicans Block You From Suing Banks And Credit Card Companies

While the continuing Trump sideshow distracts, the banks and credit card companies (including Wells Fargo and Equifax) are using their Republican pawns to screw us:

And, tellingly,

John McCain, too.

Meanwhile, but her emails! but the pee- pee dossier!

BONUS: Charles Pierce on what the Republicans have done --
You know who’s going to get hosed now, Senator McCain? All those veterans and military families that you’re always so tender about. You know who’s going to take it in the ear, Senators Corker, Flake, and Sasse? All those middle-class people in all those little towns that you spend most of your time praising as the reservoir of Real American Values. None of those people mattered a damn to you Tuesday night, and it wasn’t the president* that forced you to make this vote. You did it with cold deliberation and calculated forethought.
That fits Republicans' core belief : "Afflict the afflicted, and comfort the comfortable."

Swamp Creatures: Carl Icahn Edition

The New Yorker magazine has a fascinating article (referenced briefly by Rachel Maddow last night) that looks into the dealings of billionaire investor and long-time corporate raider Carl "I Con" Icahn, who until yesterday, was an "advisor" to neo-fascist demagogue Donald "Rump" Trump for regulatory "reform", a euphemism for cutting regulations unpopular with corporations. What makes that particular connection galling is that Icahn -- who has long chafed under Federal regulations impacting his investments -- was more interested in boosting his profits through cutting regulations, particularly at the EPA, that were bothersome to his bottom line.

In particular, he was bleeding millions from his investment in CVR, an oil refinery in Texas, due to a requirement that ethanol be blended into their fuel or purchase "credits" from refineries that do. He wanted that requirement done away with, and he let Rump know that it was his top priority:
"Appearing on Bloomberg TV on August 16, 2016, [Icahn] vowed that Trump would put an end to 'these crazy regulations' on his first day in office. In fact, Icahn continued, he had spoken with Trump about the E.P.A. rule obliging his refiner to purchase renewable-fuel credits. If elected, Trump 'will stop that,' Icahn promised. 'That’s a hundred per cent.' Several weeks after Trump’s victory, Icahn tweeted, 'I’ve agreed to serve as a special advisor to the president on issues relating to regulatory reform.' [snip]
In the months after the election, the stock price of CVR, Icahn’s refiner, nearly doubled—a surge that is difficult to explain without acknowledging the appointment of the company’s lead shareholder to a White House position. The rally meant a personal benefit for Icahn, at least on paper, of half a billion dollars." (emphasis added)
Icahn's brief stint as "advisor" to Rump on regulatory matters benefitted him greatly, perhaps even beyond the CVR caper. Financiers quoted in the New Yorker article joke that it was a corporate raid on Washington by Icahn, and "the cheapest takeover Carl's ever done." Drain the swamp, indeed.

White House Visitor Log Secrecy -- What Are They Hiding?

Proving once again that the only thing transparent in the regime of Putin puppet Donald "Rump" Trump is their utter lack of ethics, it was announced that the regime will not continue the policy of the Obama Administration of disclosing the names of visitors to the White (Supremacist) House. In announcing the rationale for the decision, the Trumpers cited "grave national security risks" (too late -- he's already in the Oval Office) and "privacy concerns," the grotesque hypocrisy of which has been nicely summarized in this tweet:

The move has prompted at least one watchdog group to file a lawsuit to force the Rump regime to release the White House visitor logs.

We know why they're hiding the information (=cough= Swamp wins =cough=);  right now, we just don't know what specific shenanigans would be revealed.

Swamp Creatures Find Home in Rump's D.C.

The fact that neo-fascist narcissist Donald "Rump" Trump lied constantly and brazenly during his ugly campaign while making outrageous promises is no secret. What's surprising is that he's so openly disdainful of his deplorable, rage-fueled cult followers that he's ostentatiously backing off of some of those promises. Witness self-important bloviator Newt "Poot" Gingrich's comment this morning on NPR:
"I'm told he [Trump] now just disclaims that [line about draining the swamp]. He now says it was cute, but he doesn't want to use it anymore. ... I'd written what I thought was a very cute tweet about 'the alligators are complaining,' and somebody wrote back and said they were tired of hearing this stuff. ..."
Poot was one of those washed-up hacks that soaked up the deflected orange glow at Rump's Nuremberg rallies, along with despicable Rudi "Noun Verb 9-11" Giuliani, and bridge traffic monitor Chris "Krispykreme" Christie, none of whom landed a job with Rump. However, someone who may do very nicely in the swamp that Rump will stock with various reptiles is his former campaign manager / CNN "surrogate"/  batterer of females Cory Lewandowski. He's started a "political consulting" firm in D.C., allegedly to advance Rump's agenda and most certainly to line his pockets as a lobbyist / access peddler.  Now, the only thing this newest inhabitant of the DC swamp has to worry about is getting eaten by larger, smarter predators in the swamp. It's only a matter of time.

BONUS: Yep.

Today's Swamp Draining Cartoon And Photo

(Matt Wuerker, Politico)

The dolts who voted for neo- fascist con artist Donald "Rump" Trump in the hope that he would "drain the swamp" of the lobbyists and Republican insiders who created whatever swamp exists in Washington, DC, should take a close look at who the shitgibbon has on his transition team:
New reports this week make clear that the president-elect’s transition team is packed with the very veterans of the GOP establishment he spent months railing against, as well as with the lobbyists he vowed never to allow near his administration.
Only the most credulous cretins could not have anticipated this.  Oh, did we say "credulous cretins?" We meant "Republican base."

Meanwhile, all those Republican Congresscritters who a week ago were running to get as far away from Rump as their little chicken legs could carry them, have now decided they're all in with their authoritarian master.  To commemorate the occasion of their capitulation, they were provided with their own "Make America Great Again" hats at a meeting this morning of the House Republican caucus deep in the swamp:

It's Trump's Party now.
