Quotes Of The Day -- "Take Our Lives Seriously"

Former First Lady Michelle Obama, directing her remarks to men at a rally in Kalamazoo, Michigan, yesterday with Vice President Kamala Harris:

“We expect her to be intelligent and articulate, to have a clear set of policies, to never show too much anger, to prove time and time again that she belongs.  But for Trump, we expect nothing at all, no understanding of policy, no ability to put together a coherent argument, no honesty, no decency, no morals.”

Obamas' Speeches Electrify DNC

Last night's feature speakers at the DNC were former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, who came through with electrifying speeches.  ICYMI, there are full transcripts at the links below, and full speeches on YouTube and other platforms.  These are just a few highlights

Barack Obama:

... And as we gather here tonight, the people who will decide this election are asking a very simple question:

Who will fight for me? Who’s thinking about my future; about my children’s future – about our future together?

One thing is for certain: Donald Trump is not losing sleep over these questions. This is a 78-year-old billionaire who hasn’t stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago. It’s been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually gotten worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala. The childish nicknames and crazy conspiracy theories and weird obsession with crowd size. It just goes on and on. The other day, I heard someone compare Trump to the neighbor who keeps running his leaf blower outside your window every minute of every day.

From a neighbor, that’s exhausting. From a president, it’s just dangerous. The truth is, Donald Trump sees power as nothing more than a means to his ends. He wants the middle class to pay the price for another huge tax cut that would mostly help himand his rich friends. He killed a bipartisan immigration deal that would’ve helped secure our southern border because he thought trying to actually solve the problem would hurt his campaign. He doesn’t seem to care if more women lose their reproductive freedoms since it won’t affect his life.

Most of all, Donald Trump wants us to think that this country is hopelessly divided between us and them; between the real Americans who support him and the outsiders who don’t. And he wants you to think that you’ll be richer and safer if you just give him the power to put those “other” people back in their place.

It’s one of the oldest tricks in politics – from a guy whose act has gotten pretty stale. We don’t need four more years of bluster and chaos. We’ve seen that movie – and we all know that the sequel’s usually worse.

America is ready for a new chapter. America’s ready for a better story.

We are ready for a President Kamala Harris...

Michelle Obama:

... It couldn’t be more obvious: Of the two major candidates in this race, only Kamala Harris truly understands the unseen labor and unwavering commitment that has always made America great.

Now, unfortunately, we know what comes next. We know folks are going to do everything they can to distort her truth. My husband and I, sadly, know a little something about this. For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black.

Wait, I want to know: Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those “Black jobs”?...

There were other speeches worth quoting (including that of future First Gentleman Doug Emhoff), which we will touch on later in "Tweets...".  But last night really belonged to the Obamas and, characteristically, they delivered.

Sunday Reflection: Protecting Freedom

"You cannot take your freedoms for granted. Just like generations who have come before you, you have to do your part to preserve and protect those freedoms... you need to be preparing yourself to add your voice to our national conversation." -- former First Lady Michelle Obama, who celebrates her birthday today, in her last speech as First Lady on January 6, 2017.  How we miss her and her husband President Obama, especially after the darkness and dystopia of the last four years under a mentally disturbed authoritarian.

On January 6 at the Capitol, we saw what happens when people give up on democracy and give in to a depraved, narcissistic political cult figure. We can't take our democracy for granted because there are too many willing to take it away.

The Unconventional Convention -- Day 1

ICYMI, here are some of the key remarks from the first night of the Democratic National Convention (if you only have time to view one, we recommend Michelle Obama's powerful, spot- on address).

QOTD

“I understand the people who voted for Trump.  The people who didn’t vote at all, the young people, the women, that’s when you think, man, people think this is a game. It wasn’t just in this election. Every midterm. Every time Barack didn’t get the Congress he needed, that was because our folks didn’t show up. After all that work, they just couldn’t be bothered to vote at all. That’s my trauma.” -- Michelle Obama, on non- voter and Democratic voter turnout problems, quoted in the Netflix special "Becoming" (based on her book), streaming starting on Wednesday.  Based on 2018 and other off- year results, it's not looking like motivation will be a problem this year.  But absolutely nothing can be taken for granted.

Michelle Obama's Final Public Remarks As First Lady

We've been so privileged to have had the Obamas in the White House. We're going to miss their humanity, class and intelligence more than we can express.  Here's just one 7 1/2 minute example why (speaking at the 2017 School Counselor of the Year ceremony yesterday):

Sunday Reflection - Dignity

"See, the choice you make November 8th could determine whether we have a President who treats people with respect -- or not.  A President who will fight for kids, for good schools, for good jobs for our families -- or not.  A President who thinks that women deserve the right to make our own choices about our bodies and our health -- or not.  (Applause.)  That’s just a little bit of what’s at stake.

"So we cannot afford to be tired or turned off.  And we cannot afford to stay home on Election Day.  Because on November the 8th, we have the power to show our children that America’s greatness comes from recognizing the innate dignity and worth of all our people.  On November the 8th, we can show our children that this country is big enough to have a place for us all -- men and women, folks of every background and walk of life -- and that each of us is a precious part of this great American story, and we are always stronger together."  -- First Lady Michelle Obama in Manchester, NH, on October 13.  It was hard to pick just one part of her speech to reflect on.  It was heartfelt, real, and emotionally gripping. (The video is embedded here, and if you haven't had a chance to see it, it'll be worth your time.)

The Obamas Continue Making The Case For Hillary Clinton (UPDATED)

Two of Hillary Clinton's most effective campaigners are starting to make their presences felt:

Then President Obama called into the "Steve Harvey Morning Show" to discuss various topics including unfit neo- fascist weaselheaded f*cknugget Donald "Rump" Trump's misogyny and the importance of voting for Secretary Clinton (you can hear the full radio interview here).  Here are a few choice takes:
-- "You have somebody who basically insulted women," he said, "And then doubled down in terms of how he talks about them, and talks about their weight, and talks about how they look instead of the content of their character and their capabilities."
-- "[He is] not somebody I want in the Oval Office that my daughters are listening to and that sons are listening to," Obama said. "And so, across the board you’ve got somebody who appears to only care about himself."
-- "If there’s one message I want to deliver to everybody, if you don’t vote that’s a vote for Trump," he said. "If you don’t vote, that’s a vote for Trump."
Somehow, that message has got to get through to these folks in particular.  Anything other than a vote for Secretary Clinton is something you'll regret for the rest of your lives.

UPDATE:  And here's a clip of Michelle Obama speaking at La Salle University in Philadelphia today, specifically addressing the problem of millennials not voting or voting third party (full speech here):

"Evolution of Mom Dancing:" Michelle Obama and Jimmy Fallon

Wonderful segment on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" last night, featuring Jimmy and Michelle Obama.  What a beautiful, poised First Lady we have (spoiler alert:  she's got the moves, too):

When You Live in a Glass Mega Mansion...

Reactionary tub o' lard Oxycontin Rush Limpballs has never shown the slightest sign of self-awareness, but his latest broadside against Michelle Obama makes us wonder if the hateful f**k has ever stood in front of a mirror. It seems Limpballs doesn't want Obama to tell people to each healthy foods because he doesn't think she's in good enough shape to do so. Well, I for one would put money any day on the First Lady kicking Limpballs' ginormous ass in any fitness or attractiveness contest, wouldn't you?

Limpballs isn't the only right-winger to go after the First Lady in recent days - Mama Fizzly and Michele "I See Commies" Bachmann have recently attacked her for supporting breastfeeding (!). Yes, the barking dog right-wing attack machine is always "on", even when an Obama's doing something good.
