Keeping Hate Alive

The Highlander Research and Education Center has been instrumental in social justice organizing and training in eastern Tennessee since its founding in 1932. When it was destroyed by a fire last Friday, documents and memorabilia spanning decades were lost; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks were guests of the Center over the years.

While bomb and arson officials are investigating the cause of the fire, a "white power" symbol was sprayed on a parking lot adjacent to the Center, lending weight to the belief that the fire was started by white supremacists. A news release from the Center echoed that belief:
"While we don't know the names of the culprits, we know that the white power movement has been increasing and consolidating power across the South, across this nation, and globally. Since 2016, the white power movement has become more visible, and we’ve seen that manifest in various ways, both subtle and overt." (our emphasis)
What could have happened in 2016 that prompted the white power movement to "become more visible?" Hmmmmm. We're not saying a group of racist red caps changed into their Klan gear and torched the Center, but we are saying that the climate for that to happen has flourished under sociopath and bigot Donald "Not Exonerated" Trump, and he's doing nothing to combat it.

BONUS: Not only not doing anything to combat it, but --

Mid-Week Avett Song

The indie folk / Americana band The Avett Brothers have been making music together since their childhood in North Carolina. They have managed to fuse folk, pop, country and bluegrass into their music, which has brought them a dedicated following and awards. Their tenth album is scheduled to appear later this year, but a few weeks ago they released "Neapolitan Sky," an easy, melodic duet that typifies their sound. Enjoy.

Shocker: Trump's Consumer Product "Safety" Commission Isn't About "Safety"

Today's Washington Post has an exposé on how Republicans on the Consumer Product Safety Commission sank a recall for a brand of baby jogging stroller made by Britax that had an unfortunate habit of having its front wheel fall off.  Chalk up another win for E. coli conservatives:
The untold story of the Britax case shows how changes in the safety agency’s leadership under President Trump influenced the handling of a product that the commission believed had injured consumers. The case was even more striking because it unfolded as Republicans assumed day-to-day control of the agency, eventually earning a majority on the agency’s oversight commission for the first time in more than a decade.
According to a review of documents by The Washington Post and interviews with eight current and former senior agency officials, the agency’s Republican chairwoman kept Democratic commissioners in the dark about the stroller investigation and then helped end the case in court. Some spoke on the condition of anonymity because of agency rules against discussing cases.
These events occurred with little notice amid other, higher-profile deregulatory moves by the Trump administration. But consumer advocates said changes at the Consumer Product Safety Commission could be a worrisome sign of regulators pulling back at an agency that oversees safety in 15,000 everyday products, from toys and dressers to lawn mowers and table saws.  (our emphasis)
The Republican chairwoman behind this is quite the fox in the CPSC chickencoop:
Ann Marie Buerkle, a Republican, was named acting chairwoman in February 2017. Trump has nominated her to take on the role permanently.
Buerkle, who has served on the commission since 2013, was the only commissioner to oppose proposed portable-generator rules aimed at reducing carbon monoxide poisoning in 2016. She was again the lone vote that year against a then-record $15.45 million penalty for a company accused of making humidifiers prone to catching fire. [snip]

In Buerkle’s first two years as chairwoman, the number of companies fined for misconduct declined to five in 2017-2018 from 12 in 2015-2016. Public voluntary recalls fell about 13 percent during the same period, resulting in approximately 80 fewer recalls, according to agency data. Last year, the number of public recalls fell to its lowest level in a decade, consumer advocates say.  (our emphasis)
So, the bottom line, after the Commission's professional compliance staff unanimously went on record calling for a safety recall, and after the pre- election Democratic majority Commission filed a lawsuit to force Britax to recall its defective strollers, the post- election Republican majority led by Buerkle [spoiler alert!] deliberately sank the Commission's case against Britax.

Beyond the anti- consumer decision at hand, this also sends a clear message to businesses that they can get away with pretty much anything, consumers be damned.  And that's precisely the outcome E. coli conservatives want.

Madam Mayor

Congrats to Chicago's mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot on her victory in yesterday's mayoral elections. Lightfoot, a former prosecutor and openly gay woman, ran on a platform of anti-corruption and  of accountability for the Chicago Police Department. Remarkably, Lightfoot appears to have won all of Chicago's 50 wards.

Lightfoot joins seven other African-American women running big cities, including Atlanta, Charlotte, and New Orleans. She'll be sworn in on May 20.

Tweets Of The Day -- Compulsive Liars Compulsively Lie

The lying comes so naturally--

You'd think the Birther-In-Chief would know where his own father was born (the Bronx).

Republican Crime Blotter -- Bribery Edition (UPDATED)

When they're not committing voter suppression and election fraud, those North Carolina Republicans, like their brethren elsewhere, just have to be up to no good:
North Carolina's largest political donor and three others, including the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, have been indicted on bribery charges.
Greg Lindberg, John Palermo, John Gray and Robin Hayes were indicted last month, but the indictments were unsealed Tuesday. They're all accused of trying to bribe state Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey.
Hayes is also charged with three counts of making false statements to the FBI.
Hayes is a former congressman and GOP candidate for governor. On Monday, he announced that he wouldn't seek another term as chairman of the state Republican Party.
Hayes and Lindberg were also indicted on wire fraud charges.

We talk about the "rotted out Republican Party" all the time:  from the lowest ranks of frothing, know- nothing red hats to the leadership comprised of lying, cynical, bigoted, authoritarian crooks, this is a party that has comfortably and permanently settled into the bottom of the political cesspool.  Stuff like this is par for the course, though the grasping gall of these jamokes never ceases to amaze.

UPDATE:  The investigation seems to have implicated a Republican Congressman- cum- Pastor as well.  Hallelujah!

Trump's Callous Disregard For Puerto Rico

After suffering two back-to-back Category 5 hurricanes in October 2017, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has struggled to recover, experiencing massive housing dislocations, electric grid destruction and food and medicine shortages. Roughly 3,000 deaths from the hurricanes were reported, and yet demagogue and malignant narcissist Donald "Rump" Trump is opposed to giving needed assistance to our fellow Americans apparently because they've been ungrateful for his generous gift of paper towels. His regime's delayed response to the disaster in Puerto Rico has been widely deemed a failure.

Earlier this year, Rump had attempted to cut off Federal disaster aid to Puerto Rico, lying that the island's government was intending to use the aid for its debt, and trying to shift the funds to the Rump-friendly states of Florida and Texas. Yesterday, a Senate bill that limited relief to Puerto Rico to food stamps was rejected along party lines.

It's going to be very difficult to get Rump and his Rethuglican cult on board with any additional aid to Puerto Rico, given their animosity and prejudice. It's going to take increasing pressure on them in Congress, and a massive voter turnout in States with a significant Puerto Rican presence. That said, sadly, for many of our fellow citizens, it will be too little, too late.

BONUS: This morning on MSNBC, White (Supremacist) House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan "Diddley" Gidley referred to Puerto Rico several times as "that country." These people are nothing but callous, ignorant bigots.

BONUS II:

Rump and his regime don't know what the hell they're talking about. Meanwhile, they lie.

Trump's DHS Disbands Domestic Terror Unit

A couple of weeks ago, when bigot-in-chief and demagogue Donald "Not Exonerated" Trump responded to a question about domestic white supremacists being a growing threat, he downplayed it, as might be expected since they form a share of his base. It's part of a pattern with him, like when he pretended not to know who David Duke was after he got his endorsement, or his "very fine people" comment about neo-Nazis after Charlottesville.

There are now reports that last year Trump's Department of Homeland Security quietly disbanded a unit that collected and analyzed intelligence on domestic terrorism, including growing incidents of white supremacist terrorism. The analysts that previously worked in the intelligence unit were reassigned elsewhere. The effect has been to hamper law enforcement and to put the public at greater risk:
"In the wake of this move, officials said the number of analytic reports produced by DHS about domestic terrorism, including the threat from white supremacists, has dropped significantly. People in and close to the department said this has generated significant concern at headquarters.

'It’s especially problematic given the growth in right-wing extremism and domestic terrorism we are seeing in the U.S. and abroad,' one former intelligence official told The Daily Beast.

The group in question was a branch of analysts in DHS’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A). They focused on the threat from homegrown violent extremists and domestic terrorists. The analysts there shared information with state and local law enforcement to help them protect their communities from these threats.
[snip]
Former officials pointed to a spate of domestic terror attacks in recent years as evidence that DHS erred by shuttering this branch. From the massacre that left 11 people dead at a Pittsburgh synagogue to a shooting targeting Republican members of Congress in June 2018 to bomb threats that a deranged Trump fan directed at prominent Democrats and CNN, violent attacks informed by homegrown hatred have left Americans increasingly terrorized." (our emphasis)
There's the defensive pushback from DHS saying "nothing to see here," but the fact that State and local law enforcement officials are concerned about not getting the intelligence reports on domestic terrorism that they had been getting reflects the damage that's being done.

QOTD -- Trumpcare Is Nocare

"You may, by the way, have heard talk about G.O.P. members of Congress opposed to Trump’s new health care push. But they share his goals; they’re just questioning his timing. The whole party still wants to take away your health care. It just hopes to get through the next election before you find out." -- Paul Krugman in an op/ ed describing Republicans' intentional, repetitive lies about health care.  In confirmation of Krugman's point, Donald "Not Exonerated" Trump is now saying there won't be a Republican "plan" until after the 2020 elections. Hmm, wonder why...

We never tire of pointing out the Republican motto: "Afflict the afflicted, comfort the comfortable."

25 Security Clearance Denials Overruled By Trump White House

How else could you hire all the swamp creatures?
A White House Personnel Security Office employee is alleging that senior Trump administration officials often rebuffed national security concerns to grant high-level security clearances to people who were initially denied access to top-secret information, a pattern she described as troubling and one she said continued for months.
That employee, Tricia Newbold, laid out a series of explosive allegations, often implicating Carl Kline, the former White House personnel security chief. She kept a list of White House officials whose clearance applications were initially denied but eventually overruled, and said the list included as many as 25 people, some of whom had daily access to the president.

“According to Ms. Newbold, these individuals had a wide range of serious disqualifying issues involving foreign influence, conflicts of interest, concerning personal conduct, financial problems, drug use, and criminal conduct,” aides wrote in the 10-page memo, summarizing Newbold’s testimony.  (our emphasis)
"[F]oreign influence, conflicts of interest, concerning personal conduct, financial problems, drug use, and criminal conduct..."  That sure describes Trump and his "only the best" people to a tee.

We already think we know who two of the 25 (!) problematic perps are:

The House Oversight and Reform Committee under Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) has been digging into the burgeoning scandal, having recently interviewed Ms. Newbold and requesting (for now) documents from the White House on the clearance office's practices and sketchy overrides of professional staff's concerns.  Tuesday, the Committee is planning to subpoena Ms. Newbold's boss, Carl Kline, who ran the security clearance operation at the White House and seemed eager to please Putin pal Donald "Not Exonerated" Trump and his other flunkies at every opportunity.

Nadler About To Launch Subpoenas

With House Dems expecting Trump's Attorney General and John Goodman stunt double William "Low" Barr to let tomorrow's deadline slide for producing the unredacted Mueller investigative report, a vote by the House Judiciary Committee on subpoenaing the full report is scheduled for Wednesday. Last Friday, Barr tried to slow walk Congress again by saying that a redacted report would be provided to them in mid-April.

It's also noteworthy that House Judiciary Committee chair Rep. Jerry Nadler has other Trump co-conspirators in his sights with subpoenas:
"The panel will also vote to authorize subpoenas related to a number of President Donald Trump’s former top advisers, including strategist Steve Bannon, Communications Director Hope Hicks, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, White House Counsel Donald McGahn and counsel Ann Donaldson. Donaldson served as McGahn’s chief of staff before both left the administration.

The five were probably key witnesses in Mueller’s probe of possible obstruction of justice. The meeting notice says they 'may have received documents from the White House relevant to the special counsel investigation, or their outside counsel may have, waiving applicable privileges under the law.' The subpoenas would be related to documents where executive privilege was waived 'and related matters,' the notice says."
(our emphasis)
Last month, Chairman Nadler sent document requests to 81 Trump co-conspirators, including the above cited people, regarding a range of possible crimes including obstruction of justice, and abuse of power. He's a man on a mission and focused like a laser on not only the details in the Mueller report, but on the shady, unethical behavior of the Trump crew.

As always, please go to the links for the full articles/ op eds.

This is an April Fool's Day- free zone!

Despite the heavy spin applied by John Goodman stunt double William "Low" Barr's 4- page letter summarizing (?) parts of the Mueller report, the subsequent credulous acceptance by some in the blow- dried media, and the bizarre overreaching by Putin pal Donald "Rump" Trump, the public isn't buying what Barr/ the media/ Trump are selling on Russiagate:

Greg Sargent goes on to ask, "Have we really learned nothing from the first two years of the Trump presidency?"
Welcome to the new narrative: President Trump and Republicans are “turning the tables” and going “on offense” against Democrats and the media, who, we are told, should be groveling for forgiveness in the wake of Attorney General William P. Barr’s brief summary of the special counsel’s Russiagate conclusions.
Unfortunately, there are scattered signs that some in those quarters are taking this far too seriously. We’re seeing news accounts suggesting media coverage of the Russia scandal may have overreached; columnists demanding introspection from journalistic colleagues; and analyses that overestimate the degree to which Trump can now claim victory over Democrats. Some accounts hint at angst among Democrats about how aggressive an investigative posture to strike going forward.
It’s amazing this needs to be stated, but here goes. This “new offensive” from Trump and Republicans is saturated with nonsense from top to bottom, and it is designed to get the media to back off of its entirely legitimate scrutiny of Trump, and to get Democrats to retreat from their entirely legitimate efforts to impose oversight and accountability.
Who are among the ones that can't/ don't want to learn?  Charlatans and their clueless flocks, especially those classy "prosperity" con artists:
Pastor John Gray was outed this week for begging his congregation for $250,000 to fix the church’s roof while basking in a $1.8 million mansion and buying his wife a Lamborghini. Now his church threatening anyone daring to call him out.
The Miami Herald outed the pastor, who spoke in a Sunday sermon at Relentless Church in Greenville, South Carolina. He appeared to deliver his remarks after Hope Carpenter briefly gave her own sermon praising Gray. [snip]
“I love you Pastor John and Pastor Aventer. I believe in you. I’m praying for you. I’m rooting for you,” Carpenter said. “I cut people. I got a knife right in that pocketbook. Greenville News, come on. We done went through this. I’m still here, and guess who else is still gonna be here?” Carpenter then pointed to the Grays.
Gray, who’s been supportive of President Donald Trump, appeared on national talk shows trying to deny rumors that he had a child with a woman he had an affair with. (our emphasis)
Getting others to pay for his extravagant lifestyle: check.  Not taking responsibility for debts: check. Running a scam operation:  check.  Extramarital affair: check.  No wonder this guy has an affinity for Trump.

You've no doubt heard about Trump's latest distraction and diversion gambit, which, like many of his others, will end up making things worse.  Here's Joel Mathis:
President Trump is threatening to close the U.S. border with Mexico.

He made the threat on Friday — a response to surging migrant arrivals at the border — then repeated it Saturday on Twitter. On Sunday, White House officials took to the morning news shows to make it clear he wasn't kidding. As White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said on Fox News, the president's threat "certainly isn't a bluff."

Let us hope it is. Because shutting down the border probably wouldn't do much to curb illegal immigration. It will, however, have dramatic and disastrous consequences for America. As The Washington Post reports, it "would disrupt supply chains for major U.S. automakers, trigger swift price increases for grocery shoppers, and invite lawsuits against the federal government."

Any reasonable U.S. politician would avoid such a catastrophe. But we're talking about Trump here, so anything is possible.  (our emphasis)
In a one- two punch to America's gut, Trump also wants to cut off aid to three Mexican Central American countries, ostensibly to keep migrants from leaving for the U.S.  What could possibly go wrong with that plan?
President Trump’s plan to cut off aid to three Central American countries for failing to stop the flow of migrants toward the United States breaks with years of conventional wisdom in Washington that the best way to halt migration is to attack its root causes.
The decision also runs counter to the approach advocated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico, among others. Mr. López Obrador has been lobbying Washington to join his government in investing billions of dollars in Central America and southern Mexico, arguing that economic development and reducing violence are the most effective ways to encourage Central Americans to remain home.
Cutting off aid is “shooting yourself in the foot,” said Adriana Beltrán, the director of citizen security at the Washington Office on Latin America, a human rights research group that tracks aid closely.
That's what you get when the one calling the foot- shots is an impulsive, irrational, narcissistic moron who's desperately trying to save his hide.

Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly has a new book out completely dedicated to Trump's cheating at golf, "Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump."
“To say ‘Donald Trump cheats’ is like saying ‘Michael Phelps swims,’” writes Rick Reilly in the book. “He cheats at the highest level. He cheats when people are watching and he cheats when they aren’t. He cheats whether you like it or not. He cheats because that’s how he plays golf … if you’re playing golf with him, he’s going to cheat.” Reilly, who has played with Trump, also mocked Trump’s claim of a 2.8 handicap, a ridiculous allegation when Jack Nicklaus, often considered the greatest golfer in history, has a handicap of 3.4. “If Trump is a 2.8,” Reilly writes, “Queen Elizabeth is a pole vaulter.”[snip]
... But it isn’t just that he gets help with his own balls. He also makes it harder for those who are playing with him. Mike Tirico, the former ESPN football announcer, said that he once hit a great shot that he knew was close. But when he got to the putting green it was much further away than he expected. Tirico didn’t understand what happened until Trump’s caddy spoke up. “Trump’s caddy came up to me and said, ‘You know that shot you hit on the par 5?’” Tirico said. “‘It was about 10 feet from the hole. Trump threw it in the bunker. I watched him do it.’”
What a small, small, insecure thing Putin's pal is. But we already knew that.

As always, we highly recommend a visit to Infidel 753's blog round-up for a really exceptional set of links.  One that we particularly enjoyed today was his link to BexMinx's post on a magnificent theater turned into a bookstore in Buenos Aires. Here's one of several eye- popping pictures:

A bookstore that magnificent might even encourage Trump to read. (Nah!)
