No "Kumbaya" While Republicans Spread Big Lie

As we noted in third item in the post below, many mainstream "journalists" are "moving on" from the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, looking the other way as Republican pols gaslight and perpetuate the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen. CNN's Pamela Brown appears willing to break from the pack, as she demonstrated yesterday on her program, following an interview she had the previous day with Trumpist Sen. Roger Marshall (Sedition-KS) who urged everyone to "move on" and "heal" after January 6:

"We would all love to heal and move on from this shameful episode of our country, but here's the thing, the reality is Republicans and their followers have not moved on from the election. Case in point, the officials who enabled it or are complicit with their silence should be held accountable. In Arizona, as you see in this video right here, Republicans are still trying to overturn the 2020 results and fuel paranoia with a partisan audit of ballots after two prior audits already found no issues and only confirmed the results — the fact that Trump lost that state. Well, this year, Republicans in almost every single state legislature have introduced new voting restrictions. And they're using lies like 'rampant voter fraud' to justify the measures. [snip]

The same GOP propaganda that led to a deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol, as you see, it has not gone away. That's why I challenge every single Republican I have on the show who voted to overturn the election. They don't get to have everybody sing kumbaya until they stop repeating the same baseless claim that caused this."  (our emphasis)

More of this and more often....everywhere.

Another day, another deeply disturbed christofascist Republican acts out:

Kansas state Rep. Mark Samsel was arrested on charges of misdemeanor battery on Thursday after getting into a physical altercation with a student while substitute teaching in Wellsville. [snip]

On Wednesday, Samsel, R-Wellsville, was substitute teaching at the Wellsville school district’s secondary school. Throughout the day, high school students began recording videos of the lawmaker talking about suicide, sex, masturbation, God and the Bible.

In one video shared with The Star, Samsel tells students about “a sophomore who’s tried killing himself three times,” adding that it was because “he has two parents and they’re both females.”  [snip]

In another video, Samsel is recorded telling students, “make babies. Who likes making babies? That feels good, doesn’t it? Procreate ... You haven’t masturbated? Don’t answer that question. ... God already knows.”

Videos shared with The Star — by parents of students in the class — show Samsel focusing most of his attention on one male student. Both Samsel and the student paced around the classroom, talking back and forth. Samsel is shown following the student around and grabbing him. In one video, he puts his arms around the student and says that he was being hard on him.

At one point, Samsel tells the student, “You’re about ready to anger me and get the wrath of God. Do you believe me when I tell you that God has been speaking to me?” He then pushes him, and the student runs to the other side of the classroom.

“You should run and scream.”

In another video, he tells students, “Class, you have permission to kick him in the balls.”

Thank goodness for cell phone cameras.

The vaccine- hesitant, MAGAts and anti- vaxxers combine to likely keep America from reaching "herd immunity":

Early in the pandemic, when vaccines for the coronavirus were still just a glimmer on the horizon, the term “herd immunity” came to signify the endgame: the point when enough Americans would be protected from the virus so we could be rid of the pathogen and reclaim our lives.

Now, more than half of adults in the United States have been inoculated with at least one dose of a vaccine. But daily vaccination rates are slipping, and there is widespread consensus among scientists and public health experts that the herd immunity threshold is not attainable — at least not in the foreseeable future, and perhaps not ever.

Instead, they are coming to the conclusion that rather than making a long-promised exit, the virus will most likely become a manageable threat that will continue to circulate in the United States for years to come, still causing hospitalizations and deaths but in much smaller numbers.

Even at a lower rate, this is causing unnecessary death.  It's selfish and immoral, period.

At least one media outlet isn't letting local seditious Republicans escape down the memory hole:

The journalists at WITF, an all-news public radio station in Harrisburg, Pa., made a perfectly reasonable decision a few months ago.

They decided they wouldn’t shrug off the damaging lies of election denialism.

They wouldn’t do what too many in Big Journalism have done in recent months: shove into the memory hole the undemocratic efforts by some Republican elected officials to delegitimize or overturn the 2020 presidential election. [snip]

The deadly culmination of that anti-democratic lie, the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, solidified their thinking. In late January, the station — whose newsroom includes six reporters and two editors — posted an explanatory story stating that they would be regularly reminding their audience that some state legislators signed a letter urging Congress to vote against certifying the Pennsylvania election results, and that some members of Congress had voted against certifying the state’s election results for President Biden, despite no evidence to support their election-fraud claims.

These elected officials, WITF reminded its audience, either knowingly spread disinformation or flat-out lied in an effort to keep Trump in office.

A small, all- news public radio station practices ethical journalism and good public citizenship;  wouldn't it be grand if big corporate media had followed suit (CNN's "State of the Union" is the exception to the rule, as the article notes)?

If you're squeamish, you may want to skip this one about the plague of mice in Australia, another likely outcome of global climate change:

Australia, right now, feels a little biblical. There was a terrible drought, then the worst bush fires ever recorded. A flood came next. Now it’s the turn of the mice.

The scale of the mouse plague is hard to comprehend. In the western districts of New South Wales (NSW), the country’s most populous state, millions of mice are now on the march. There are also serious infestations in southern Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.

On social media, farmers post videos showing the swarm in action, while farming organizations say the cost is already in the millions.

When presenting reports of the mouse plague on Sydney radio, I issue a warning about “material that may disturb some listeners.” The details are disgusting. Consider yourself warned.

Bradley Wilshire, a farmer near Dubbo, captured more than 500 in one night and then shared details of how to build the bucket trap in which he caught them.

According to the Country Women’s Association, farmers have been bitten in their beds, with some protecting themselves from incursions by placing each leg of their bed or child’s cot in a bucket of sand or water.

Need a palate cleanser after that?  There's plenty to distract you over at Infidel 753's link round-up. It's a kaleidoscopic collection of links to posts that he's taken the time to curate just for you!

Across The Universe, Cont. -- Diamond Necklace Nebula

From NASA/ ESA, April 26, 2021: The interaction of two doomed stars has created this spectacular ring adorned with bright clumps of gas — a diamond necklace of cosmic proportions. Fittingly known as the Necklace Nebula, this planetary nebula is located 15 000 light-years away from Earth in the small, dim constellation of Sagitta (The Arrow).

The Necklace Nebula — which also goes by the less glamorous name of PN G054.2-03.4 — was produced by a pair of tightly orbiting Sun-like stars. Roughly 10 000 years ago, one of the aging stars expanded and engulfed its smaller companion, creating something astronomers call a “common envelope”. The smaller star continued to orbit inside its larger companion, increasing the bloated giant’s rotation rate until large parts of it spun outwards into space. This escaping ring of debris formed the Necklace Nebula, with particularly dense clumps of gas forming the bright “diamonds” around the ring.

The pair of stars which created the Necklace Nebula remain so close together — separated by only a few million kilometres — that they appear as a single bright dot in the centre of this image. Despite their close encounter the stars are still furiously whirling around each other, completing an orbit in just over a day.

The Necklace Nebula was featured in a previously released Hubble image, but now this new image has been created by applying advanced processing techniques, making for a new and improved view of this intriguing object. The composite image includes several exposures from Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3.

The Anything-But-An-Audit In Arizona

The Arizona GQP Senate's "audit" of the ballots from Maricopa County, the state's largest jurisdiction, is proceeding in secret, as befits a conspiracy- driven effort.  The GQP senators and the state's GQP chair, certifiable nut Kelli "Low-IQAnon" Ward, has made sure fellow crackpots are in charge of the ballot counting/disenfranchising:

The private companies hired by Arizona Senate Republicans to recount millions of ballots from the 2020 election are concerned about possible Antifa attacks and planned to use UV lights to hunt for fraud, internal documents released as part of a legal battle with Democrats revealed.  [snip]

The documents offer a detailed look at the conspiratorial thinking behind an extraordinary partisan hunt for fraud some six months after former President Donald Trump lost the election and began pushing the lie that it was stolen from him.

“It would be comical if it weren't so scary,” Rick Hasen, an election law expert and a professor at the University of California, Irvine, said of the audit.

The CEO of Cyber Ninjas, the group hired to count/disenfranchise ballots, is a Trump nut named Doug Logan:

Cyber Ninja's CEO, Doug Logan, reportedly advanced 2020 conspiracy theories online, and refuses to say how much money he will make on this audit. The audit is funded with $150,000 in taxpayer dollars, as well as an undisclosed number of private donations whose names are still shrouded in secrecy.

Logan and Ken Bennett, a former Republican secretary of state of Arizona who is overseeing the audit at the request of the GOP-controlled state Senate, sparred with reporters over how much the effort would cost in a contentious news conference last week.

What kind of crackpot effort is underway you didn't ask?  Here's one example of the standards:

Media access to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum arena where the count is taking place was initially limited unless reporters agreed to be volunteer observers. When one reporter from The Arizona Republic did so, she noticed that proper procedures for handling ballots were not being followed after she spotted blue pens near ballots. Election officials say red or green pens are used to ensure that ink does not spoil or change a vote, because ballot-counting machines can read blue or black ink.

One America News Network, a right-wing cable channel, has been given special access to cover the audit and reported that audit workers were using ultra-violet light to search for watermarks — a possible reference to a thoroughly debunked QAnon conspiracy that Trump secretly watermarked ballots to prove voter fraud.

“It's a bunch of bull!” Hobbs said of the alleged watermarks. “They're making stuff up."

That's what Republicans do, right?  Make stuff up.

In the meantime, the Department of Justice has been asked to send monitors to document the shitshow:

Election security specialists with high-powered policy groups are calling for federal monitors to oversee the Arizona Senate's hand recount of 2.1 million ballots cast in Maricopa County.

Citing violations of voting and election laws, representatives of the Brennan Center for Justice, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and Protect Democracy urged the Department of Justice to protect ballots and prevent voter intimidation.

"Ballots that are protected under federal law are in imminent danger of being stolen, defaced, or irretrievably damaged, and Arizona citizens are in imminent danger of being subject to unlawful voter intimidation,"  the four security specialists wrote in the April 29 letter. [snip]

"We believe that the Senate and its agents ... are violating their duty under federal law to retain and preserve ballots cast in a federal election," the specialists wrote. "They also risk compromising the integrity of the ballots themselves, using materials and technologies that will cause the ballot paper and marks to deteriorate."

The aforementioned GQP chair, exercising authority only existing in her fevered brain, orders the federal government to stay away from Arizona:

Arizona GOP Chair Kelli Ward lashed out at the request Friday on YouTube, saying it was a Democratic Party-led effort to derail the audit and wrest control of the election from state officials.

"Arizona is off limits to the federal government trampling on our constitutional rights and our sovereignty," Ward said. "When it comes to managing our own election, we believe in the U.S. Constitution."

Ward, who has promoted baseless conspiracy theories that the 2020 presidential election was rigged against former president Donald Trump, has championed the audit as a way to ensure election integrity in Arizona.

We're absolutely certain that will scare the feds away, Kelli, you lump.

The letter to the DOJ referenced above contains this warning that the GQP and their tinfoil hat canvassers would do well to heed:

We are very concerned that the auditors are engaged in ongoing and imminent violations of federal voting and election laws. Specifically, we believe that the senate and its agents, including Cyber Ninjas, are 1) violating their duty under federal law to retain and preserve ballots cast in a federal election, which are and have been in danger of being stolen, defaced, or irretrievably damaged, and 2) preparing to engage in conduct which will constitute unlawful voter intimidation in violation of the Voting Rights Act and other federal laws.

Should these cranks, in furtherance of the Big Lie, engage in any of the activities noted above (and it appears from reports they may have already), the full weight of the federal judicial system should come down on their tinfoil- covered heads.

(Photo:  Of course, one of the ballot "auditors" is former state Rep. Anthony Kern, who was at the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.  Seems legit.)

Sunday Reflection: Justice Served

Ten years ago today, President Obama announced that the perpetrator of the 9 - 11 attack had been killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan with these words:

"Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children."

The al Qaeda cult hasn't recovered from the killing of its fanatical leader, but has mutated in countries in the region, often fighting for power with other radical terrorist groups. It would have been hard to imagine 10 years ago that a decade later the most serious terrorist threat to the U.S. would come from domestic right-wing, white supremacist groups and individuals.

Will Falwell Party Like There's No Second Coming?

Right-wing Christofascist perv Jerry "Fall Bad" Falwell, Jr.  can't seem to avoid questionable situations. After being dismissed and sued for millions by his familial scam, Liberty "University," for his and his thirsty wife Becki's sexual escapades with a young pool attendant, Falwell has been persona non grata around campus. But showing that shame has no bounds with this Trump-supporting Bible thumper, world- class hypocrite Falwell appeared unannounced at a student event on Thursday evening and invited seniors to a par-tay at his farm for "the real Liberty graduation," according to Politico. We can only imagine what he has in mind for a party at his place for the hormone-raging younguns: free hookups with wife Becki while he looks on, free flowing booze as he and co-eds walk around with their pants unzipped, a speaking-in-tongues contest, a contest for who can grovel best before a golden statue of their Dear Leader Donald?

We suspect that the outraged, upstanding leaders of Liberty "University" will put out a stern warning to seniors and others to avoid Falwell's farm or risk eternal hellfire and damnation. Some may decide to risk it for some Biblical sexytime with Becki.

What's Behind Vaccine Skepticism

As we just passed the 100 million Americans fully vaccinated threshhold, the public health community is facing the challenge of a significant number of Americans skeptical or hostile about getting a COVID vaccination.  At first, they believed it would just be a matter of educating them as to the extremely safe, highly effective vaccines that would save lives and allow us to get back to "normal" again.  But, those who've been studying the vaccine skeptic problem have found out that it's not something that reasoning and presenting facts will necessarily overcome.

Dr. Saad Omer, Director of the Yale Institute for Public Health points out the problems:

Dr. Omer and a team of scientists found that skeptics were much more likely than nonskeptics to have a highly developed sensitivity for liberty — the rights of individuals — and to have less deference to those in positions of power.

Skeptics were also twice as likely to care a lot about the “purity” of their bodies and their minds. They disapprove of things they consider disgusting, and the mind-set defies neat categorization: It could be religious — halal or kosher — or entirely secular, like people who care deeply about toxins in foods or in the environment.

These are "gut" feelings that have developed around political divisions, distrust of government or pharmaceutical companies, as well as conspiratorial thinking about vaccinations in general that's been amplified by social media.

“At the root are these moral intuitions — these gut feelings — and they are very strong,” said Jeff Huntsinger, a social psychologist at Loyola University Chicago who studies emotion and decision-making and collaborated with Dr. Omer’s team. “It’s very hard to override them with facts and information. You can’t reason with them in that way.”

These qualities tend to predominate among conservatives but they are present among liberals too. They are also present among people with no politics at all.

Eventually, some of the skepticism will wear off as time passes and the safety and efficacy of the vaccines becomes even more apparent.  But in the meantime, it's a challenge (to say the least) if we're to get enough people immunized to be able to protect ourselves and our country.

The entire article is worth a read to get more perspective on the problem.
