Trump's Monkey Business

Anyone who thought con-man-in-chief Donald "Rump" Trump was sincere when he conducted his "press conference" on January 11 promising to deal with conflicts of interest with his business holdings...well, we'll sign you up for a course in ethics at Trump University. Pro Publica has researched the process required for Rump to meet even the barest minimum standards to avoid conflicts of interest, and surprise! he has yet to complete it. He promised to transfer his companies to his sons, Beavis and Butthead, before the inauguration rather than to divest his holdings entirely (foreign entities would still be dealing with the Trump family as far as loans, patronage, etc.).  The three states where he needs to file the documents hadn't received the necessary documents as of the afternoon of January 20, hours into Rump's term, and in violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution.
"To transfer ownership of his biggest companies, Trump has to file a long list of documents in Florida, Delaware and New York. We asked officials in each of those states whether they have received the paperwork. As of 3:15 p.m. today, the officials said they have not.Trump and his associates 'are not doing what they said they would do,' said Richard Painter, the chief ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush. 'And even that was completely inadequate.”
Expect more smoke and mirrors from a con artist who will prove to be the most unethical and corrupt in our nation's history. He's hoping, as with his still-unreleased tax returns, that the public won't care about his family business getting richer with foreign gratuities and barely-concealed bribes. He has to be held accountable.

Tweets Of The Day - Fake News, Er, Folders

Do you remember those piles of folders neo- fascist con artist Donald "Rump" Trump displayed at his news conference yesterday, to show the amount of paperwork that'd been done to "divest" responsibility for his companies to his sons Uday and Qusay?

Wellll...

The lying shitgibbon.  Our Great and Powerful Oz is going to run his administration like a Potemkin village, all of it based on fake claims, false promises, and "appearances" -- with a big assist from his puppetmaster Putin.

Yes, Virginia, There Will Be No Trump Conflicts Of Interest*

"I hate to break it to anyone at this time of year, but (a) there is no Santa Claus, and (b) there will be no conflicts-of-interest policy in the Trump administration. What there will be are rampant conflicts of interest, more than you can count, as the Trump family and his appointees rip off anything they can — from taxpayers, from consumers, from shareholders — in a spree of deregulation, special dealing, lax white-collar-law enforcement, and corporate welfare." -- Frank Rich on neo- fascist kleptocrat Donald "Rump" Trump and his crime family's incoming Russo- Republican** sticky fingered administration.

Conflict Of Interest Of No Interest To Trump

As Inauguration Day nears, neo-fascist con man Donald "Rump" Trump has postponed Thursday's announcement of his "plan" to insulate the Presidency from his business conflicts of interest. Who would be surprised if he never did?  He said last night that he would turn his company over to his two amoral sons Uday and Qusay, which isn't remotely a "blind trust" in any legal sense. His promise that his company won't do any new "deals" while he's in office is ludicrous, ignoring the profits that would roll in on his existing investments/ properties, especially after every tin pot dictator and special interest seeking favors steers business toward them (we've already seen that with his tacky, gilded hotel in Washington, D.C.)

Whatever the pathological liar says next month, he will almost certainly be in violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution the instant he finishes swearing to uphold the Constitution. He clearly didn't expect to face this problem, since he didn't think he'd win, only to build his brand. But, the complete narcissist that he is, he won't sell off his branded assets that define him and fill his empty soul, violation of the Constitution be damned.

(Mike Luckovich, Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- love those tiny hands on Rump!)

We eagerly await Rump's December 15 announcement to see how he'll continue to play the media and convince his base that he's addressed his epic conflict of interest problems.  Further down the road, similar diversions and light refreshments will be offered to play the media and convince his base that he's "reforming" social safety net programs like Medicare/ Medicaid, Obamacare and Social Security as the ax falls. Fun times!

Cornucopia of Corruption Cartoons

In countless ways, corrupt con man Donald "Rump" Trump is casting aside any semblance of ethics as he continues to use his coming position to advance his business interests.  From meetings with his Indian business partners, to cajoling the Argentinian President to cut corners on his new project in Buenos Aires, to interfering in the placement of wind turbines near his golf course in Scotland, and so much more, on Rump's first day in office he would be likely in violation of Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution which prohibits Government officials from accepting emoluments or bribes from foreign states. Not that the corrupt Rethuglican Congress (or Rump's cult followers) will care, but those are impeachable offenses.

Today's Video - Driven To Distraction

Here's Seth Meyers on how the media's obsession with shiny objects distracts them from covering the burgeoning scandals of thin- skinned, bullying jackass Donald "Rump" Trump:

It would also seem that Rump's need for retaliation/ vengeance/ score- settling occupies more of his time and interest than does trying to disavow the neo- Nazi lice that are infesting his "movement." Revealing.

The Media Will Continue To Largely Downplay Trump's Illegalities

As we and others have pointed out, the story of neo- fascist con artist Donald "Rump" Trump settling his various fraud suits regarding Trump "University" for the princely sum of $25 million has largely escaped the notice of our bloodhounds in the corporate media.  Mark Sumner notes,
On Friday, the President-elect of the United States agreed to pay $25 million for defrauding students of his not-a-university. That settlement includes $1 million in payments to the State of New York for violations of state law. During the campaign, Trump had denied he would ever settle, saying it was “a matter of principle.” However, he’s now treating the $25 million payout as a victory, calling it a “fraction” of his potential losses.
But less than 48 hours later, you won’t find the story on the front of the New York Times, despite New York AG Eric Schneiderman’s dogged work in assembling the case. You wont find it on the front of the Washington Post, despite the outrageous implications of a president paying out tens of millions weeks before taking office. You won’t find it on the Miami Herald, despite the connection between Trump’s “university” and contributions to Florida’s AG that had all the earmarks of old-fashioned bribes.  (our emphasis)
Imagine if this were a story about the Clinton Foundation's finances instead of the transparent, multi- million dollar con that was Trump "University."  (Scott Lemieux does.) We've had over a year to see that the ethical bar is so low for Rump in the corporate media that it essentially doesn't exist.

Think about that when you read this:
Friday evening, the Washington Post reported * that about 100 foreign diplomats gathered at President-elect Donald Trump’s hotel in Washington, DC to “to sip Trump-branded champagne, dine on sliders and hear a sales pitch about the U.S. president-elect’s newest hotel.” The tour included a look at the hotel’s $20,000 a night “town house” suite. The Post also quoted some of the diplomats saying they intended to stay at the hotel in order to ingratiate themselves to the incoming president.
“Why wouldn’t I stay at his hotel blocks from the White House, so I can tell the new president, ‘I love your new hotel!’” said one diplomat from an Asian nation. “Isn’t it rude to come to his city and say, ‘I am staying at your competitor?’”
The incoming president, in other words, is actively soliciting business from agents of foreign governments. Many of these agents, in turn, said that they will accept the president-elect’s offer to do business because they want to win favor with the new leader of the United States.
In an exclusive exchange with ThinkProgress, Richard Painter, a University of Minnesota law professor who previously served as chief ethics counsel to President George W. Bush, says that Trump’s efforts to do business with these diplomats is at odds with a provision of the Constitution intended to prevent foreign states from effectively buying influence with federal officials.  (our emphasis)
Combine this with Rump's children being heavily involved in the transition (including meeting with foreign leaders) and his curious understanding of what a "blind trust" is, and it's not hard to get the sense that Rump fully intends to proceed with enriching himself and his family while in office. We know his ego is wrapped up in the trappings of wealth, and he's not going to miss any opportunity to trade on the Presidency to enhance that wealth. He. Has. No. Ethics.

Given the low bar that the corporate media has provided Rump throughout his foray into politics, it's also not hard to get the sense that -- Democrats' howling notwithstanding -- he'll bluff and shamble his way through, with the media giving short shrift to his business- as- usual scams and violations of the Constitution.

* By the way, what should have been a front page story ended up on the Post's Business page.

Welcome to the White House Shopping Network

There's outrage over neo-fascist demagogue Donald "Rump" Trump's daughter (and focus of his lust) Ivanka's use of an appearance on "60 Minutes" to hawk a $10,800 bracelet from her collection. The conflation of her business with Rump's interview is a disturbing reminder that neither she nor Rump have sorted out their business vs. their government roles. That's not even touching on the serious conflict of interest that persists between Rump's future public role and his private business enterprise, which he deludes himself into thinking could be turned over to his adult children in a "blind trust," which is a ridiculous misunderstanding of the legal term. And if the public was led to believe that the Clinton Foundation represented a "pay-to-play" scheme, they should imagine an army of hustlers wanting to "do business" with the Trump organization -- joint ventures, capital loans, etc. -- mainly to gain leverage over the incoming Administration's policies.

The Rump daughter's misstep also shows how truly out of touch the family is, regardless of the normalizing bullsh*t being cranked up by a lazy corporate media claiming that Rump connected with working class whites over their "economic anxiety."  No doubt, many of his supporters imagine Rump's wealth will rub off on them if they support his policies. But Ivanka's unintended message to them was summed up in Seth Meyer's "A Closer Look" segment last night, along with Rump's fumbling transition effort:
"Did you hear that, disenfranchised white working class voters? For only $11,000 you can make your wrist great again!"
