The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The good:

... The Democratic Party gave up its participation in this [Iowa caucus] goat-roping. There was much weeping and rending of garments over this, mostly from people who believe that a quadrennial trip to the cornfields is just too fcking adorable. But a barely organized gathering of god-bothering white hayshakers has as much to do with the modern Democratic Party as it does with Luxembourg’s Chamber of Deputies. [snip]

The Democrats, who don’t have a real nomination fight anyway, sensibly decided to kick off with four straight primaries in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, and Michigan. New Hampshire helps them maintain the quaint, and the other three are states vital to the general election. They even got the Nevada Democrats to abandon the caucus process for a primary. There is no Democratic caucus event until March 12, and that one is in the Northern Marianas Islands. Iowa is buried in the chaos of Super Tuesday on March 5, and it’s a mail-in vote. Which is pretty much where it belongs.

Iowa never had a firm grip on its pride of place. It jumped ahead of New Hampshire in 1972, but nobody thought much of the Iowa caucuses until 1976, when a win there gave the longshot candidacy of Jimmy Carter its first real boost. Still, most of the kickoff attention remained focused on New Hampshire’s primary, which established its reputation at least as far back as 1960. But the facts on the ground were changing in Iowa. The rise of activist conservative religion changed the landscape first of the Iowa Republican Party, and then of the politics of the entire state. The first inkling of what was to come came in 1988, when crackpot preacher Pat Robertson took a strong second behind Robert Dole in the GOP caucuses. As Iowa slid faster and faster toward its personal Lord and Savior, it became less and less relevant to the Democratic Party until its banjaxed 2020 process finally exhausted the party’s patience. So the Democrats left the state to Jesus—and, to the weather...
A most unrepresentative state -- caucusing, overwhelmingly rural, white, and god-bothering -- Iowa is best left to Jesus "Christians" and the weather, until its voters return it to the relative sanity it enjoyed a little over a generation ago. We hope (but don't pray). Speaking of which...

The bad:

... For years, White conservative evangelicals have played a crucial role in determining who wins the Republican caucuses that kick off the nominating process. And this year, they are showing strong support for Trump, according to interviews with Republican voters, strategists and Christian leaders across the state. The decision in some ways reflects a shift from the kind of late-breaking underdog candidates they have embraced in the past, who had deeper roots in Christian churches, and Trump’s enduring dominance across much of the GOP spectrum.

In several ways, Trump is an unlikely hero for those who identify as deeply religious Christians given his history of committing adultery, promoting falsehoods, and uttering vulgar comments and insults about women and people who cross him. But many have overlooked these indiscretions and questionable morals.

“The support has gone from begrudging to enthusiastic. Many evangelicals now see Trump as their champion and defender — perhaps even savior,” said Barry Hankins, a history professor at Baylor University who is an expert in evangelicalism. “Unwittingly, in my view, many evangelicals are welcoming authoritarianism and courting blasphemy.”  [snip]

Standing outside a commit-to-caucus rally in Clinton, Iowa, recently, Paul Figie, a pastor and a Trump caucus captain, said Trump is “ordained by God.” He pointed to how he has seen Trump as being mistreated by the justice system and Democrats, equating the former president to a martyr. He dismissed the viability of other candidates, saying he was convinced that a higher power would put Trump back in office.

“Trump is the guy to be in there, and amen,” he said...

"Screw you and amen, you clueless, Bible-banging hypocrite," we said.  They cloak their fascist politics of aggrievement in a veneer of religiosity.  There's no better example of a waste of time than dealing with these damaged slugs.

The ugly:

Sophia Danner-Okotie’s has ambitious plans for her Nigerian-inspired clothing line but a sense of dread has punctured her optimism as she watches a legal battle being waged against a small venture capital firm that has provided funding instrumental to her boutique brand’s growth.

The case against the Fearless Fund alleges that one of its grant programs discriminates against non-Black women and asks the courts to imagine a similar program designed only for white applicants. It is among a growing list of lawsuits against corporate diversity and inclusion programs that are making their way through the courts this year.

Most have been filed by conservative activists encouraged by the Supreme Court’s June ruling ending affirmative action in college admissions and are now seeking to set a similar precedent in the working world.

The battle has been a roller coaster of setbacks and victories for both sides, but some companies are already retooling their diversity programs in the face of legal challenges, and the growing expectation that the conservative-dominated Supreme Court will eventually take up the issue.

One conservative activist, Christopher Rufo, claimed another victory this month with the resignation of Harvard’s first Black woman president, Claudine Gay, after allegations of plagiarism and a furor over her congressional testimony about antisemitism.

Rufo, who has cast Gay’s appointment to the job as the culmination of diversity and inclusion efforts that have sidelined conservative voices in higher education, vowed on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, not to “stop until we have abolished DEI ideology from every institution in America.”

Dozens of prominent companies have already been targeted, as well as a wide array of diversity initiatives, including fellowships, hiring goals, anti-bias training and contract programs for minority or women-owned businesses.

Some challenges have focused on policies adopted after the 2020 protests over George Floyd’s killing by police as companies pledged more efforts to redress racial inequalities in the workplace. But others have targeted decades-old diversity programs that anti-affirmative action advocates have long tried to dismantle...

The white nationalist scumbag Rufo and fellow racists like Stephen Miller are driving forces behind these legal intimidation tactics -- which, sadly, seem to be working.  We're expecting that eventually the same Republican Supreme Court that declared that racism was over in the United States in Shelby and the Students for Fair Admissions cases should be favorably disposed to the Rufo/ Miller arguments.

Christofascist: Govern U.S. Under "Biblical Law"

There are a wide variety of right-wing religious lunatics out there, the vast majority supporting their latest Golden Calf, the venal and corrupt Malignant Loser. They've formed a group to push his candidacy, despite his manifest un-Christian behavior and values: "Pastors for Trump." Last week, at the Tulsa, OK, church of the group's founder Jackson Lahmeyer, a guest rant was performed by Christofascist Sean "Feucht Up" Feucht, and, as Rolling Stone reports, it's was classic white-hot nuttery:

"Standing on stage at Sheridan Church on Wednesday, Feucht made a direct call for Christian nationalism — declaring that America should be governed according to biblical law for the benefit of believers, as a way to prepare for the second coming of Christ.

'It’s all part of The King coming back,' Feucht told the audience. 'That’s what we’re practicing for,' he insisted, before adding, 'That’s why we get called "Christian nationalists."'

Feucht then presented an imaginary dialog, in which he mockingly imitated the voice of secular critics: 'You want The Kingdom to be the government,' he said, before thundering a reply in his own voice: 'Yes!'

'You want God to come on over and take over the government,' he said, responding, again: 'Yes!'”  (our emphasis)

Feucht, who wears his hair Jebus-style, is no stranger to MAGA idiocy, having once been a candidate for Congress and having "prayed over" the Malignant Loser in the Oval Office. He has allies in Congress that mirror his Christofascist zealotry, namely Marjorie "Traitor" Greene and Lauren "Bobo" Boebert, the latter having organized his prayer service in the Capitol rotunda last month. You can be assured that Feucht's views on guns, minorities, political violence and other matters align with theirs, and are notably "un-Christian" like their hate-spewing cult leader in Merde o'Lardo. We're waiting for the inevitable "revelation" that Feucht is another Bible-banging hypocrite in his personal life.

Falwell, Jr.: Greetings From Sodom and Gomorrah

This viral pic of American Talibangelist and Trump fluffer, the execrable Jerry Falwell, Jr., speaks volumes about his diseased, hyper right-wing "evangelical" movement that his sinister "Moral Majority" namesake helped to create. With his and his commando friend's pants unzipped, Falwell reflects his p*ssygrabbing Dear Leader's moral vacuity and predatory instincts. Oh, and he also wants you to know that's "black water" in his glass (wtf is that?), and not a rum and Coke, etc. As with his Dear Leader's imperiousness, he apparently doesn't believe that the rules he imposes on the staff and students at Liberty "University" apply to him.

We'd like to see what other "vacation shots" are out there. Perhaps Falwell, Jr. with his pool boy protege, or a nighttime rally around a burning cross. With this depraved bum, nothing would surprise us.

"Praise The Lard!"

Donald "Beelzebub" Trump met with a group of grifters on Thursday to shore up his standing among the Bible- thumping crowd damned.  (That blond on Beelzebub's right shoulder is his "spiritual advisor" [insert snark here], Paula White, the latest grifter to be put on the White House payroll, with your tax dollars.)  The blow- dried talibangelists needed to transmit their godly vibrations to Beelzebug via their "laying on of hands."  Some reactions:

"Only I (The Second Coming) Can Fix It" (UPDATED)

Malignant narcissist and delusional demagogue Donald "Two Corinthians" Trump is cultivating his Messiah complex for his cult base:

Wayne Allyn Root, btw, is a notorious conspiracy theorist and bigot who has often espoused anti-Semitic tropes. The response to Trump's tweet (which so-called evangelicals should find blasphemous) didn't spare his sinful ass:

This is psychiatric ward / rubber room territory for someone who has consistently displayed signs of mental illness and sociopathy. And remember that he has his small fingers on the nuclear button.

UPDATE:  Not surprisingly, the megalomaniac narcissist believes it ("Lock him up... in a padded room!") --

Monday Reading

As always, please go to the links for the full articles/ op eds.

An (inadvertently?) revealing look at what counts for the values of evangelical "Christian" supporters of the cloven hooved occupant of the Oval Office:
For evangelicals, however, Trump’s indelicate language has frustrated religious fans who have otherwise been true blue supporters of his agenda. They agree with his social policies, praise his appointment of conservative judges and extol his commitment to Israel — often tolerating Trump’s character flaws for the continued advancement of all three. But when it comes to “using the Lord’s name in vain,” as Hardesty put it, “the president’s evangelical base might be far less forgiving.”
You can hate minorities, encourage white supremacists, cage babies, defile women, lie and cheat, but don't say the magic conjuring words in vain!  Values Voters!

Speaking of lies (and Jesus Christ let's call them lies, shall we?):
President Trump’s proclivity for spouting exaggerated numbers, unwarranted boasts and outright falsehoods [Ed.: "lies"] has continued at a remarkable pace. As of Aug. 5, his 928th day in office, he had made 12,019 false or misleading claims [Ed.: "lies"], according to the Fact Checker’s database that analyzes, categorizes and tracks every suspect statement the president has uttered.
Trump crossed the 10,000 mark on April 26, and he has been averaging about 20 fishy claims [Ed.: "lies"] a day since then. From the start of his presidency, he has averaged about 13 such claims [Ed.: "lies"] a day.
The Oval Office's hot air bladder has rather a transparent "tell" when he's sweating something:  quickly trying to shift the spotlight away from himself.  In the case of the suspicious jailhouse death of his partying pal Jeffrey Epstein, he wants to re- direct your attention to (who else?) the Clintons:
Following the reported suicide of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, President Donald Trump took to Twitter over the weekend to push bizarre, baseless conspiracies that the Clintons may be behind Epstein’s death.
Trump’s attempts to fan the flames of conspiracy — without any evidence whatsoever to back up his claims — received rounds of condemnation across the U.S., including from Democratic presidential candidates like former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ).
However, according to the White House, Trump’s collapse into conspiracy wasn’t an effort to stoke his far-right conspiratorial base. Rather, according to presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s conspiracy theories are actually just a way of indicating that the president wants a thorough investigation of Epstein’s death.
In a Sunday morning appearance on Fox News, Conway defended Trump’s conspiracies, claiming that Trump “just wants everything to be investigated.”
Let's see.  The Metropolitan Correction Center is part of the Bureau of Prisons, which is part of the Justice Department, which is under Trump consigliere William "Low" Barr, who is under =checks notes=  fellow fancier of younger women Donald "Look Over There" Trump.  Clearly, the Clintons did it.

From the wide world of sports, you may have seen or heard about Olympian Simone Biles' historic ending to her balance beam routine -- a double double (two flips, two twists) -- at the U.S, Gymnastics Championship:

... which she then followed the next night with the first- ever triple double (two flips, three twists) in the floor competition (winning her 6th national championship):

Finally, check out Infidel 753's link round- up for all the "interesting stuff" he finds in his weekly scouring of the internet.  We don't know how he manages to pull off his version of a triple double every week, but it's worth your time to see what he's found.

Dispatches From Trumplandia

This is your occasional glimpse into the fetid swamps of Trumplandia.  Prepare not to be surprised.

Thou Shalt Not Kill -- Unless It's Your Former Son-In-Law
A former member of President Donald Trump’s evangelical advisory board is under investigation for allegedly trying to hire a hitman to murder his former son-in-law.
James MacDonald, founder of Harvest Bible Chapel, was accused by his former bodyguard Emmanuel “Manny” Bucur and Chicago radio personality Mancow Muller of seeking someone to kill former son-in-law Tony Groves, reported independent journalist Julie Roys.
So is anyone surprised he'd be on Trump's evangelical advisory board?  Didn't think so.

Boys Will Be Boys
Tennessee's embattled House speaker said Tuesday that he plans to resign from his leadership post following a vote of no confidence by his Republican caucus amid a scandal over explicit text messages.  [snip]
The demands began earlier this month, when it was revealed that [State Rep. Glen] Casada had exchanged text messages containing sexually explicit language about women with his former chief of staff several years ago.
When they're not busy trying to control a woman's reproductive freedom, they love sexting about women's bodies to their puerile buds.  Or, when they're not sexting, they're...

Literally Punch Drunk
A south Mississippi lawmaker punched his wife in the face after she didn't undress quickly enough when the lawmaker wanted to have sex, according to a police report in the case.
Republican state Rep. Doug McLeod of Lucedale was arrested Saturday on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. [snip]
Deputies reported McLeod was drunk and holding a glass of alcohol when they arrived at the family's home Saturday night. Deputies report McLeod had punched his wife and bloodied her nose. They found blood on the bed and bedroom floor. [snip]
When deputies entered, they said two women were standing at the top of a stairwell and both appeared frightened. McLeod's wife eventually came outside after deputies assured her they would keep her away from her husband.
The deputy said McLeod's wife was shaking and upset. McLeod's wife said her husband was drunk and "just snapped," as he often does when under the influence of alcohol, the report said.
Another woman present said McLeod's wife came running up to her room, her face bloodied. The woman shut the door and locked it with McLeod's wife inside.
A deeply heartfelt apology, some time in alcohol abuse and marriage counseling, and this turd will be ready to go back legislating from the wellspring of his deep moral convictions.

The rotted out Republican Party, ladies and gentlemen.

White Evangelicals' Shifting Morality

Going back at least as far as the bigoted Jerry Falwell's "Moral Majority" scam, right-wing political "evangelicals" have been an appendage of the Rethuglican / New Confederate / Kids-In-Cages Party, selective with their moral outrage at Dems, while ignoring or giving a pass to their deeply corrupt Rethug brethren. So it's no surprise that the flower of this multi-decade hypocrisy, namely corrupt sexual assaulter and lying fraudster Donald "Not Exonerated" Trump, has been embraced by the right-wing political evangelicals.

In their article in today's Washington Post, David Campbell and Geoffrey Layman describe the gyrations of the right-wing political evangelicals as they defend an immoral black hole like Trump just years after piling on President Clinton for his moral failings. The self-righteous blast by far-right hardcore bigot Franklin Graham at Dem Presidential hopeful Mayor Pete Buttigieg for being gay is just the latest example of the deep corruption of these self-described religious leaders.

This passage from the Post article sums up their double standard nicely:
"In 2011, a poll conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and the Religion News Service found that 60 percent of white evangelicals believed that a public official who 'commits an immoral act in their personal life' cannot still 'behave ethically and fulfill their duties in their public and professional life.' But in an October 2016 poll by PRRI and the Brookings Institution — after the release of the infamous 'Access Hollywood' tape — only 20 percent of evangelicals, answering the same question, said that private immorality meant someone could not behave ethically in public." (our emphasis)
Gee, who'd a thunk it, a 40 point drop in outrage? It's apparent that they have some major philosophical disconnects when it comes to their own right-wing politicians' immoral behavior. With this crowd, it's really never been about morality, otherwise they'd be at the southern border demanding a halt to the brutal treatment of immigrants (hypocrites), renouncing the wealthy "prosperity gospel" hucksters (golden calf), etc. You'll see that when "hell" freezes over.

"GOP Jesus"

The Bible, according to Republican evangelical hypocrites:
