Stephen Colbert looked at mentally unstable sociopath Donald "Rump" Trump's incoherent and disturbing interview in the New York Times and gives him some well-deserved, first class mockery.




Colbert's humor helps to raise the issue of Rump's stability to the general public. Keeping an eye on Rump's mental state under stress is becoming a serious issue, however. Yale psychiatrist Bandy X. Lee thinks we're entering a dangerous period as he feels cornered:

"His anxieties are palpable, as he resorts to more and more extreme measures and unreal justifications for building a wall. We had the extended shutdown that put us at real security risk, according to the FBI, and declaring a national emergency is a very real possibility.

He needs to maintain his shrinking base as well as to give himself a sense of victory, and he will go to all lengths to achieve it."

Rethugs won't provide the guardrails (or straitjacket) needed; only firm and persistent resistance by Dems, our Constitutional institutions, and the public will.

The Workings Of Trump's Susceptible Mind

In an op-ed article in today's USA Today, Dr. Robert Epstein, a senior research psychologist at the American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology, looks at the behavior pattern of sociopath and pathological liar Donald "Rump" Trump and concludes that he suffers from "sympathetic audience control." While disagreeing with 27 mental health professionals who have deemed Rump a danger due to his malignant narcissistic personality disorder and other issues ("The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump"), Epstein believes that Rump is controlled in small time "windows" by reactions he gets from his audiences, either positive or negative:

"Not only do his views shift, he also has no trouble denying, entirely without guile, in my view, what he said yesterday. All that’s shiny and real to him is what friends or foes are saying inside those small time windows. Everything else is fuzzy, and that’s why he can so easily tell so many lies. From his perspective, lying has no meaning. Only reacting has meaning. Trump reacts." (our emphasis)

Rump's mood shifts from, for example, insulting "Little Rocket Man" Kim Jong Un to lavishing praise on him just weeks later are a manifestation of this audience control syndrome: if his audience is critical, he's belligerent, if his audience is friendly, he's fawning, telling them what he thinks they want to hear to get their approval. How many times did we hear Rump praise a dictator like Putin because "he said nice things about me?" It's also the basis for his incompetent governing style and lack of results. Epstein continues:

"The small time window and sympathetic audience control also explain why Trump always seems to be creating foreign policy on the fly, why his meetings with world leaders rarely produce tangible results, why he can’t get congressional deals, and why he is almost certainly incapable of negotiating those famous bilateral agreements that were supposed to replace the multinational treaties he has swept aside."

While Epstein may diverge from his mental health colleagues on Rump's mental disorders, he's no less worried about the consequences of Rump's behavior:

"If I’m right, and I’m pretty sure I am, Trump is capable of only a minimal level of analytical or critical thinking. Perhaps more alarming, our president — the putative leader of the free world — doesn’t believe in anything and he rarely, if ever, means anything he says. The impulsive tweets, the conservative court appointments, the unfunded tax cuts, the obsession with a wall, the swipes at immigrants — all are byproducts (dross, if you will) of sympathetic audience control operating in small time windows. There are no principles operating here, just gusts of wind.

And if I’m right, Trump will continue to function this way — blindly, erratically and reactively, without principle or direction — for the rest of his life." (our emphasis)

We don't give a flying fig about the "rest of his life" after the Presidency. Maybe he'll buy a nice dacha outside of Moscow. It's the severe damage he's doing now to this country and its democratic institutions, while careening from one tweet to another, and from one lie to the next playing for his audience's approval.

On Bannon, The Unraveling, And The Bogus Voter Suppression Commission (UPDATED)

Let's catch up on some of the latest from the Thunderdome that is the regime of neo- fascist nitwit Donald "Rump" Trump:

The Bannon Bombshells in Michael Wolff's upcoming book "Fire and Fury."  Rump's mouthpieces issue a "cease and desist" letter and threaten to sue Steve Bannon:

In the letter, attorney Charles Harder, accused Bannon of breaking his nondisclosure agreement, “by, among other things, communicating with author Michael Wolff about Mr. Trump, his family members, and the Company [the campaign], disclosing Confidential Information to Mr. Wolff, and making disparaging statements and in some cases outright defamatory statements to Mr. Wolff about Mr. Trump, his family members.”

Smart move, Rump mouthpieces!  Keep the story going through possible extended legal action (which is not likely to succeed anyway).

Also, from the book,

Wolff book on how top aides regard Trump:  “For Steve Mnuchin and Reince Priebus, he was an ‘idiot.’ For Gary Cohn, he was ‘dumb as shit.’ For H.R. McMaster he was a ‘dope.’ The list went on.”

Which is pretty strong proof to us that these remora were/ are knowingly serving an unfit, unstable menace to America and the world mostly for their own $elfish, cynical reasons. (Jared Yates Sexton has a thread on just this point.)

Lawmakers were briefed in December on Rump's mental state. The 25th Amendment (removal of president due to mental or physical unfitness) is still the most ephemeral option given Rump's loyal following in the Cabinet (see above), but interesting to note nonetheless:

Lawmakers concerned about President Donald Trump’s mental state summoned Yale University psychiatry professor Dr. Bandy X. Lee to Capitol Hill last month for two days of briefings about his recent behavior. 

In private meetings with more than a dozen members of Congress held on Dec. 5 and 6, Lee briefed lawmakers — all Democrats except for one Republican senator, whom Lee declined to identify. Her professional warning to Capitol Hill: “He’s going to unravel, and we are seeing the signs.”

Rump disbands his bogus Voter Fraud Suppression commission. This one's mercifully dead, but don't expect Republicans to give up trying to disenfranchise Democratic- leaning voters:

President Trump on Wednesday announced that he is disbanding a controversial panel studying alleged voter fraud that became mired in multiple federal lawsuits and faced resistance from states that accused it of overreach. 

The decision is a major setback for Trump, who created the commission last year in response to his claim, for which he provided no proof, that he lost the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 because of millions of illegally cast ballots. 

The commission met only twice amid the series of lawsuits seeking to curb its authority and claims by Democrats that it was stacked to recommend voting restrictions favorable to the president’s party.

We worry, though, about the voter data from those states that complied with Kobach's requests -- and what mischief can still be accomplished with that.

On Trump's New York Times Interview

Yesterday, when his adult daycare minders weren't minding him, dimbulb narcissist Donald "Rump" Trump conducted an impromptu one- on- one interview with Michael Schmidt of the New York Times on the golf course at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

The Times has excerpts from the interview here. A must read. (Spoiler alert:  no collusion, no collusion! Also, he's nuts.)

On the Trump/ Russia scandal, he claimed 16 times over the 30- minute interview that there was no collusion between his campaign and Russians, and that everybody, including "virtually every Democrat" already knows that. (Consciousness of guilt raises it ugly orange head.) But, there was "tremendous collusion on behalf of the Russians and the Democrats..."! He said that numerous times. Did we mention he's nuts?

On a whole range of other issues from DACA/ immigration, to infrastructure, to bailing him out on health insurance, he's convinced that "Democrats will come to him" to cut deals. In an election year when, for the past 12 months, Republicans have rammed their dystopian agenda down the throats of Democrats in Congress? We don't think "Chuck and Nancy" have that much of a death wish. (Betty Cracker at Balloon Juice sees the Democrats' dilemma, though. OTOH, it would be dangerous for Democrats to "kiss the ring" of this megalomaniac.) He's nuts.

On the recently passed Republican wealthfare tax bill, he says he "knows taxes better than anybody." (Well, tax avoidance anyway.) He says the wealthfare bill will be "bigger than anyone imagines." He must mean a bigger wealth transfer to corporations and the wealthy. He also takes credit for what will be the future despoiling of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He's nuts.

On meddling with the Justice Department, he says he has "every right" to do so, but is holding off pending "fair" treatment by the Special Counsel.  He also thinks former Attorney General Eric Holder "protected" President Obama, unlike his Attorney General, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III.  "Protected." (Consciousness of guilt raises its ugly orange head again.) He's nuts.

On running for reelection, he thinks the media will "have to let me win" in order to keep selling papers, etc.  Somebody get a net!

A Check Up From The Neck Up Is Needed, Too

The very public deterioration of sociopathic buffoon Donald "Rump" Trump's mental condition is there for all to see: the slurring of his words, the childish behavior, the malignant narcissism, the vindictive anger, and so much more. So much, in fact, that psychiatrists and other mental health experts have taken the unprecedented step of going public to warn that Rump is clearly mentally unfit to serve in his position of Commander-In-Chief, something that's never happened before. But it's not only his mental health that's a serious question.

During last year's campaign, when Rump's comical doctor Harold "Dr. Strange Glove" Bornstein signed a letter regarding Rump's health that was written in Rump's own bombastic style, we had a good laugh. We knew that Rump was not about to let the public see any health records that could, for example, reveal life threatening conditions or treatment for STDs. Rump is clearly out of shape, and derides exercise as a waste of energy that must be preserved. At the G7 summit in Sicily last spring, Rump was the only leader not to walk through the streets of Taormina, instead being driven in a golf cart. His daily diet seems to largely consist of multiple Big Macs, KFC, fries and milkshakes, all calorie and cholesterol laden foods. His labored breathing and snorting have surfaced on numerous occasions when speaking.

Yesterday, during the White (Supremacist) House daily press brief, paid liar Sarah "Hucksterbee" Sanders claimed that Rump will undergo a physical early next year at Walter Reed Medical Center, and that the results will be shared. We're not holding our breath on that one. Moreover, while it would be nice to have a doctor confirm that he's in terrible physical shape, it's so much more important that he undergo a psychiatric examination that could force action on his removal from office. We're definitely not holding our breath on that one, either.

Trump's Mental State: Quote Of The Day

Psychiatrist Dr. Lance Dodes, speaking last night on MSNBC:

"Going forward, I would not be surprised by anything. If he would try to dissolve Constitution, that wouldn’t surprise me, fire the Supreme Court, wage nuclear war North Korea. These things might seem shocking, but they’re consistent, he has always been consistent in this. Once you understand he is about him, and it’s a very deeply disturbed issue, he has to protect himself from what he sees as an existential threat by denying the reality. Once you understand that, everything else follows, and it’s extremely dangerous....The worst possible case for America to have somebody who is not grossly psychotic—which everyone would know and throw them out—but close enough with a veneer to get by. That’s Donald Trump. He’s villainous because of his sociopathy and psychopathy, but with a tremendous veneer which he is extremely good at.” (emphasis added)

The rambling, vicious tweets, the unhinged behavior, the delusional conspiracy theories, all point to a mental state that may be akin to dementia. More and more people are beginning to speak out, and to identify Trump as a clear danger, given his mental instability and narcissism. It can't come soon enough.

Trump's Increasing Panic Over Indictments

Following the indictments of Russian collaborators Paul Manafort and Rick Gates on Monday, with the surprise revelation that former campaign aide George Papadopolous was cooperating with the Mueller investigation, mentally unstable narcissist Donald "Rump" Trump is under media scrutiny for his reaction. Despite his lame outreach to his New York Times stenographer Maggie Haberman to assure everyone he's perfectly serene and "not angry at anybody," Rump-watcher Gabe Sherman writes at Vanity Fair's The Hive that Rump is "apoplectic" at the turn of events, watching his favorite Fux Channel shows and getting spun up by them. Sherman reports that the seriousness of the investigation has White (Supremacist) House officials looking at "endgames" for Rump:

"The first charges in the Mueller probe have kindled talk of what the endgame for Trump looks like, according to conversations with a half-dozen advisers and friends of the president. For the first time since the investigation began, the prospect of impeachment is being considered as a realistic outcome and not just a liberal fever dream. According to a source, advisers in the West Wing are on edge and doing whatever they can not to be ensnared. One person close to Dina Powell and Gary Cohn said they’re making sure to leave rooms if the subject of Russia comes up."

There's also the added problem for Rump that he's listening to former advisor, radical white supremacist Steve "Loose Cannon" Bannon, who's urging Rump to go on the attack, something that his legal team fear will only deepen his legal problems:

"In a series of phone calls with Trump on Monday and Tuesday, Bannon told the president to shake up the legal team by installing an aggressive lawyer above Cobb, according to two sources briefed on the call. Bannon has also discussed ways to pressure Congress to defund Mueller’s investigation or limit its scope. 'Mueller shouldn’t be allowed to be a clean shot on goal,' a Bannon confidant told me. 'He must be contested and checked. Right now he has unchecked power.'”

With Rump's poll numbers slipping (33% approval in the most recent Gallup poll), no legislative accomplishments and his tax "reform" bill looking like a black hole, Rump's allies fear that "establishment" Rethuglicans may do the unthinkable:

"Bannon’s sense of urgency is being fueled by his belief that Trump’s hold on power is slipping. The collapse of Obamacare repeal, and the dimming chances that tax reform will pass soon—many Trump allies are deeply pessimistic about its prospects—have created the political climate for establishment Republicans to turn on Trump. Two weeks ago, according to a source, Bannon did a spitball analysis of the Cabinet to see which members would remain loyal to Trump in the event the 25th Amendment were invoked, thereby triggering a vote to remove the president from office. Bannon recently told people he’s not sure if Trump would survive such a vote." (emphasis added)

As the investigation spreads to close allies and family (Jared Kushner has to be panicking), Rump's pretense of calm will shatter. He'll revert to form by taking some reckless action as the walls start closing in.

Marching Psychiatrists: Trump Must Go

As reports of sociopath Donald "Rump" Trump's mental unraveling increase, a group of about 125 psychiatrists and other mental health professionals marched in Manhattan yesterday to draw attention to the danger he poses and to call for his removal from office. From the linked article:

"We can sense the power of Trump’s underlying fear that he is worthless and weak by how intensely he resists and retaliated against any criticism,” said Cornell University psychologist Harry Segal to the Post. “No matter how minor, he can’t let anything go.”

“We’re actually suffering from his narcissistic personality,” said clinical psychologist Michelle Golland. “He has no empathy. You can feel it, the way he spoke about the San Juan mayor… She has PTSD and our president mistreats her. She is re-victimized. That is a narcissist.”

We've noted previously that mental health professionals have a "duty to warn" others if someone under their care poses a threat to the public. Prior to Rump, mental health professionals have avoided going public with assessments of public officials that they haven't examined, a policy usually referred to as the "Goldwater Rule," after right-wing extremist Barry Goldwater, 1964 Rethuglican candidate for President who threatened nuclear war with Russia. However, Rump's manifest and public symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder and reckless, unstable behavior is causing psychiatrists and mental health experts to speak out, a position recently encouraged by the 3,500 member American Psychoanalytic Association. On October 3, twenty-seven well-respected psychiatrists and mental health experts published a book, "The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump," which analyses his impaired mental state as a threat to the nation.

Continually drawing attention to Rump's unfitness for office is an imperative, as he threatens domestic vandalism and division, and wars with North Korea and Iran, even as his spineless Rethuglican enablers and the majority of the Beltway media turn their heads away in denial.

His Mental Illness Could Get Millions Killed

While his Secretary of State and former Exxon CEO Rex "Rexxon" Tillerson is in Bejing trying to open up diplomatic channels to North Korea, his infantile and dangerous boss is busy pulling the rug out from under him, seeming to egg on North Korea into a war that would claim the lives of millions, both in North and South Korea (and potentially Japan and elsewhere). We have a dangerous, unhinged sociopath in the White (Supremacist) House who, if left to his own devices, will cause a catastrophe.

Rump "Seriously Sick": Ex-GOP Senator

Former Republican Senator Gordon Humphrey (R-NH) wrote a letter yesterday to New Hampshire's Congressional delegation, asking them to support H.R. 1987, a bill to set up a commission under the 25th Amendment to examine unhinged autocrat Donald "Rump" Trump's mental and physical fitness. Here are some excerpts from Humphrey's letter, which was printed in the Concord, NH Monitor:

"Donald Trump is impaired by a seriously sick psyche. His sick mind and reckless conduct could consume the lives of millions. The threat of nuclear war is steeply on the rise. [snip]

Donald Trump has shown repeated contempt for informed and wise counsel. He is sick of mind, impetuous, arrogant, belligerent and dangerous. Donald Trump should be relieved of the powers of the presidency at the earliest date. [snip]

We cannot leave our national security and our families’ safety in the hands of a president whose poor judgment, belligerence, vindictiveness and reckless impetuosity constitute an indictment of his mental health. 

Donald Trump is seriously sick. He is dangerous."

Sadly, so far there seems to be little stomach in Congress to pass any such bill, despite the evidence cited in Humphrey's strong letter and the evidence that we all see every day of Rump's dangerous unfitness.

The Angry Narcissist Needs Affirmation

As his poll numbers drop to the low 30s, as his "agenda" falls flat, and as he begins to feel the breath of the prosecutors and grand jury on his neck, narcissist and sociopath Donald "Rump" Trump is seeking out his hardcore delusional base for affirmation. Trips to deep red West Virginia (two) and other coal country venues have become regular itineraries in the first six months of his regime. His speeches to those crowds are indistinguishable from his vile campaign rallies, where he urged violence upon the media and his political opponents and lied his big orange ass off to adoring, clueless crowds.

Writing for American Prospect, Paul Waldman notes the increasing need for Rump to receive praise and obsequious loyalty from his followers and his retinue as his political failures and legal problems mount. His demands for loyalty from others to counterbalance his own insecurity got him in trouble with former FBI Director Comey, and led to suspicions that he was hiding a very significant problem when it comes to Moscow. The news yesterday that his Vice President, Mike "Dense" Pence, was preparing for a Presidential run in 2020, must have perturbed Rump, and ended up forcing Dense to issue an over-the-top, bootlicking denial. The narcissism, the paranoia, the demands for affection and loyalty may be the biggest cause of the endemic leaking from his own White (Supremacist) House. Per Waldman:

"...Pence couldn't actually point to anything in the article that was false. But the true audience for his statement was one person, the desperately insecure man in the Oval Office, for whom it amounted to, 'C'mon baby, you know you're the only one for me.' And the president needs that reassurance more than ever. He has shown that he has a deep desire for loyalty (you'll recall that he demanded it of James Comey, whose answer wasn't satisfying), but he's not getting nearly enough. In fact, Trump's own aides could be described as less loyal than any White House staff in history. All that leaking—much of which serves to portray the president as a buffoon—comes from a White House where everyone's looking out for themselves rather than doing what Trump would hope, i.e. contributing to the greater aggrandizement of Donald Trump....It won't be enough to tout the administration's accomplishments—you have be effusive about Trump himself, telling him that he is a giant among Lilliputians, a man whose wisdom, skill, and accomplishments are so spectacular that we should all fall to our knees and thank our gods that we were privileged enough to inhabit the same historical period as such a person."

Expect Rump's out-of-control need for affirmation and "loyalty" to grow in direct proportion to the escalating investigation of his ties to Moscow and his mounting failures in office.

Trump's Off-The-Wall Wall

The mental health of 71 year-old narcissistic sociopath Donald "Rump" Trump has been the subject of analysis for months now: professional commentary can be found here, here, and here, for example. The grandiose view of himself, the obsession for approval and flattery, his extreme vindictiveness, the juvenile tweets, the bullying and anger are all clear warning signs that he's not mentally well. There are also those run-of-the-mill comments that indicate his failing mind: that no one knew that health care could be so complicated, or that he didn't know Israel was in the Middle East. There's also the sexist behavior toward women, from his comments about a female Irish reporter in the Oval Office to his recent boorish comments about Brigitte Macron, wife of the French President, that indicate his lack of situational awareness and concern for others' dignity. Then there're the troubling instances of confusion: not noticing his limousine that's parked right in front of him, or walking out of a signing ceremony for one of his executive orders.

Last week, Rump told a group of reporters on Air Force One that the border wall with Mexico should be "transparent" so that you could see to the other side:

"One of the things with the wall is you need transparency....You have to be able to see through it. And I'll give you an example: As horrible as it sounds, when they throw the large sacks of drugs over, and if you have people on the other side of the wall, you don't see them — they hit you on the head with 60 pounds of stuff? It's over. As crazy as that sounds, you need transparency through that wall. But we have some incredible designs." (emphasis added)

"Crazy as it sounds..." You've got that right. But the image of people throwing 60 pound sacks of "drugs" over the wall is beyond odd and cartoonish, something you'd expect a 6 year-old to imagine holding a crayon. It's even more nonsensical than a "solar wall" which he proposed a few weeks ago, a wall that would be built in remote areas, very far from the power grid that the generated solar energy would be transmitted to. (Infidel found a smart video demonstrating the absurdity of this, as with all Trump cons.)

Whether it's the "walls" in his mind or his abnormal behavior, Rump's mental state is a clear and present danger to the security and well-being of this nation. Sadly, he'll never stand for a psychological fitness evaluation that would demonstrate fact that conclusively.

Trump's Brooding Rage Threatens Us All

Check out this description of the mood inside the White (Supremacist) House after last week's shitstorm after the firing of FBI Director James Comey:

"...(White House) officials described to CNN a sense of dejection within the West Wing ranks, where most aides were caught off guard by Trump's decision and had little ability to develop a cogent response. Even Vice President Mike Pence, who found his public statements again undercut by Trump himself, was "a little rattled" at the events of the week, according to an administration adviser. Through it all, Trump has remained largely out of sight, not leaving the White House once since he returned late Sunday night. He grew increasingly isolated and agitated, associates tell CNN, going a full week without hearing the applause and adulation that often brightens his mood." (emphasis added)

The increasingly agitated sociopath who occupies the Oval Office is one rally away from a mental breakdown, it seems. Sources close to Comey say that he was shocked at Rump's bizarre lie that President Obama had wiretapped his campaign, saying Rump was "'outside the realm of normal' and even 'crazy.'"  We've known all along that his mental and emotional instability made him totally unfit for the Presidency, and it's manifesting itself more each day. It's completely plausible that in some future week, after "going a full week without hearing the applause and adulation," he'll snap and get us into a war.

"Duty To Warn": Psychiatrists Discuss Trump's Mental Unfitness

Last Thursday, a group of psychiatrists at Yale University held a town hall meeting to discuss their "duty to warn" publicly about unfit sociopath Donald "Rump" Trump's mental state. What made the town hall meeting extraordinary was the willingness of trained psychiatrists to openly discuss what they believe to be Rump's mental illness, breaking from a decades-long tradition (known as the "Goldwater Rule") of psychiatrists refraining from diagnosing public officials who have not been examined by them in person. Underlying the psychiatrists' decision to discuss Rump's psychological unfitness is the concept of a "duty to warn", meaning a responsibility of a psychiatrist to break confidentiality and warn authorities if a patient is dangerous to himself or the community.

Some excerpts from the article: 

“The Hippocratic oath to First Do No Harm — sworn to Apollo the physician — has been turned into a self-serving hypocritical oath, charges Dr. John Gartner, a former assistant professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Medical School. 'The American Psychiatric Association looks out for the welfare of its members, to protect them from lawsuits. They’re not worrying about whether 300 million Americans are vulnerable to the life-and-death actions taken by this abnormal president.' And he and an increasing number of his colleagues are ready to declare that President Trump, whose actions are often described with neutral terms like 'unprecedented,' is in fact mentally ill." -- (emphasis added) 

"Dr. James F. Gilligan, a senior clinical professor of psychiatry at NYU Medical School, was on next, and offered that Trump’s mental unfitness had multiple causes. The mental health issues of former President Richard Nixon's alcoholic instability as he neared impeachment and former President Ronald Reagan's creeping dementia were raised largely after they left office. Now, we have a sitting (un)President who is being identified openly by mental health professionals as mentally ill. And we're less than 100 days into his term.
