QOTD: Those January 6 "Neophytes"

"On the one-year anniversary of Jan. 6, conservatives held more than two dozen 'Justice for J6' vigils across the country, arguing that most of those arrested for storming the U.S. Capitol 'were political neophytes' who hadn't realized what they were doing was wrong. In February, the Republican Party described the insurrection as 'legitimate political discourse' in censuring the two GOP members of Congress who joined the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 events. And in early April, Donald Trump told the Washington Post that he had wanted to march to the Capitol himself, saying 'I would have gone there in a minute' if the Secret Service hadn't prevented it.

All this is part of a growing effort to normalize the riot at the Capitol, and to cast its perpetrators as overwhelmingly 'ordinary people' who got caught up in the momentum of something beyond their control. But last week came decisive evidence that this simply isn't true: At least a third of those arrested in conjunction with Jan. 6 belong to a far-right network that is not just deeply interconnected but resilient and adaptable."  (our emphasis) -- Kathryn Joyce, reporting on a preliminary study by Michael Jenson, senior researcher at the University of Maryland's National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.

Of the 816 people arrested to date in connection with the January 6 insurrection coup, Jensen has so far identified at least 244 who were either members of extremist groups or who self-identified with them, not "political neophytes." He's produced an interactive map of the extremist group affiliations of the insurrectionists arrested thus far, and his research is ongoing.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: Not-So-Invincible Man

Virginia Cletus Landon Mitchell, a.k.a. "Invincible Man," turns out to be vincible, goes down:

On Jan. 6, Landon Mitchell bragged to a Facebook friend that he “breached the Capitol” and was “one of the very first in” when a pro-Trump mob stormed the halls of Congress. He appeared in video on the floor of the U.S. Senate, went through a senator’s desk and took to the dais, where he posed next to the so-called QAnon Shaman.

Later, when a friend feared that the FBI might arrest Mitchell, he wrote that he was “invincible” and “not too worried” because he “was masked up the whole time” he was inside the Capitol.

Fellow seditionist Luke Bender (arrested on July 29) identified Invincible Man when he was interviewed after his arrest.  Is there no honor among traitors!?!

Check out #SeditionHunders on Twitter or go to the FBI's Capitol violence web page to see if you can help identify any of the at- large lowlifes.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: Fence Snatcher And Iron Worker Guy Arrested

Two more insurrectionist sub- morons nabbed:

Two supporters of former President Donald Trump who were filmed on the frontlines of a battle with police at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 have been arrested by the FBI.

Cody Mattice, who identified himself as “Cody from Rochester” in a video taken at the Capitol on Jan. 6, was arrested on Thursday in Hilton, New York, according to court records. Mattice, known to online sleuths as #FenceSnatcher, was No. 284 on the FBI list, a law enforcement official told HuffPost. (“Fence Snatcher” got that nickname because video showed him ripping away the fence separating police officers from the pro-Trump mob at the Capitol building.)

The law enforcement official also confirmed the arrest of an individual seen with Mattice throughout the day on Jan. 6: James Mault, who was No. 142 on the list and was known to online investigators as #IronWorkerGuy. An Ironworkers Local previously posted on Facebook that that #IronWorkerGuy was a member of Local 33 in New York.

The government, according to a court docket entry, plans to seek the pretrial detention of Mattice, who appears to have been photographed spraying a chemical at police on Jan. 6. There are no court filings available in the case against Mault. Both men were photographed and videotaped at the front of one of the most brutal battles on Jan. 6, which took place at the main tunnel entrance on the western side of the Capitol, where the inauguration ceremony is centered. [snip]

Mattice faces charges of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon; civil disorder; entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds with a dangerous weapon; engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon; disorderly conduct in a Capitol building; and an act of physical violence on Capitol grounds. The charges against Mault are likely similar.

With the invaluable assistance of groups like the Sedition Hunters, the FBI's indicted insurrectionist count is up to more than 625.  Three fourths of the people suspected of committing crimes that day are still at large.  These are the worst of the worst Trumpers.  Help the FBI continue to Lock. Them. Up.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: Fool For A Lawyer

Today's court hearing for Brandon Fellows, a violent Trumpist insurrectionist, was derailed today when he asked permission to represent himself, and for a change in his detention status. Fellows is being held on five criminal counts, including felony obstruction of an official proceeding. Fellows has been in the D.C. Jail since June after violating his pre-trial release agreement (missing a mental health evaluation, harassing his probation officer's family, and more). He's quite the dangerous jackass:

"In charging documents, federal prosecutors say Fellows, wearing a fake orange beard, can be seen on the live stream of Tim 'Baked Alaska' Gionet with his feet up on a table in the private office of Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley. Fellows was identified in part due to screenshots of his Facebook account, including an image of his profile photo that included the words 'We took the Capitol and it was glorious.'

Fellows was also quoted in a Bloomberg article about the Capitol riot in which he claimed to have entered the building through a broken window after watching other Trump supporters breaking in a door."

Fellows asked to represent himself because he says he believes there's "a mountain of evidence" that would exonerate him, contrary to the significant evidence against him. In a Facebook posting, Fellows exulted in the violent insurrection:

Federal District Judge Thomas McFadden, responding to Fellows' request for release from jail, declined and told him he had to be back in court in two weeks after consulting with his public defender about representing himself. Just on the obstruction count, he faces up to 20 years in prison, and has demonstrated that he deserves a large part of that by his contempt for the law and the court.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists -- #FlagGaiterCopHater And #BlackHatSprayer

David Nicholas Dempsey, 34, of Van Nuys, and Jeffrey Scott Brown, 54, of Santa Ana, are charged with federal offenses related to their alleged assault and impediment of certain officers. Dempsey is charged with use of a dangerous weapon, obstruction of an official proceeding, and civil disorder in addition to assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers. Brown is separately charged with inflicting bodily injury on officers, obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, among other charges. Both men made their initial court appearances today in the Central District of California.

According to court documents, Dempsey was captured in numerous videos taken on the lower west terrace during the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. As depicted, Dempsey wore various outfits, but predominantly a black shirt, dark helmet, goggles and an American flag gaiter covering most of his face. In several still photos, he can be seen using various objects, including a crutch and a metal pole, as bludgeoning weapons or projectiles against the line of law enforcement officers protecting the tunnel in front of the west terrace entrance. Additional video footage shows Dempsey spraying officers with what appears to be a lacrimal agent.

According to court documents, Brown was part of the crowd entering the tunnel at the lower west terrace. Video footage shows him reaching through the crowd towards another rioter, who provides him with a can of spray. Brown can then be seen pointing the can towards the police defensive line and deploying the spray for several seconds in the direction of the police. Brown also participated in the pushing action against officers who were attempting to restrict access to the U.S. Capitol.

Brown is a fan of the execrable Alex Jones' Infowars, which partially explains why his brain is diseased. Dempsey is a Proud Boy -- 'nuff said.

More than 570 insurrectionists have been arrested so far, 170 of them charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.  On- line sedition hunters, as well as tips from social media, have played an important part in tracking down and bringing these fascist insurrectionists to heel. The FBI is still looking for many of the insurrectionist morons.  Check out their web site to see if anyone looks familiar.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: CatSweat Now Sporting Orange Jumpsuit

Another violent insurrectionist has been arrested, thanks to social media sleuths:

When former President Donald Trump sent a tweet early this year promoting Jan. 6 as a “Historic day,” a conspiracy-minded former bodybuilder from Michigan let the president know he had his back.

“I’ll be there,” Logan Barnhart replied to @realDonaldTrump on Twitter.

Now, seven months after the man online sleuths dubbed #CatSweat was photographed dragging a police officer down a set of stairs during the attack on the U.S. Capitol, the Michigan man has been arrested by the FBI. An official confirmed the arrest to HuffPost Tuesday morning.

Barnhart, whom the FBI referred to as Capitol suspect 128-AFO because he was wanted for assaulting federal officers, was a major target for the “Sedition Hunters” community, which had given him the nickname “CatSweat” because he was wearing a sweatshirt branded with the name of Caterpillar, the construction equipment manufacturer. (Barnhart worked as a machine operator for Barnhart & Son Inc., which is owned by his father.)  [snip]

Barnhart was a “white whale” for members of the Sedition Hunters community, which sprung to life after Jan. 6. An image from that day shows a man in a hooded “CAT” sweatshirt grabbing onto a D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officer whom he and others are dragging down a set of stairs outside a tunnel on the western side of the U.S. Capitol(our emphasis)

Ah, but pride goeth before a fall, CatSweat:

After participating in the attack on the Capitol, Barnhart continued to post right-wing material on Instagram that dismissed the threat of COVID-19. He posted a video of himself inside a Walmart (where he said he was the only person not wearing a mask) as well as memes about LeBron James and rants about Black Lives Matter.

In February, about a month after taking part in the attack, Barnhart sarcastically mocked the “amazing FBI doing some fine investigative work,” citing a Capitol image that was doctored to include a meme that was included in an FBI affidavit.

“Like I’ve said multiple times. Everything you’re being told about this is a lie and it will be revealed,” Barnhart wrote on Feb. 5. “Sorry but what really happened at the [Capitol] is being hidden from you.” (our emphasis)

Pure, un- distilled MAGAt violence- prone delusion combined with prodigious ignorance and hubris. Multiply that by millions, and that's what we're up against in this country.

On- line sedition hunters, as well as tips from social media, have played an important part in tracking down and bringing these fascist insurrectionists to heel. The FBI is still looking for many of the insurrectionist morons.  Check out their web site to see if anyone looks familiar.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: #StripesGuy, Etc.

One of the more violent January 6 insurrectionists has been arrested and charged:

The FBI arrested a Texas man this week who was recorded ripping the gas mask off a Washington, D.C., police officer, taking his baton and beating him with it during an especially violent push by insurrectionists to breach the western side of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Steve Cappuccio, identified by online sleuths as #StripesGuy due to the pattern of his clothing recorded during the riot, was recently included in a superseding indictment that has eight other defendants facing criminal action for participating in the assault on police in the Capitol tunnel.  [snip]

Cappuccio, “using a deadly or dangerous weapon, that is, a baton, did forcibly assault, resist, oppose, impede, intimidate, and interfere with an officer and employee of the United States … and any person assisting such an officer and employee, that is, D.H., an officer from the Metropolitan Police Department, while such officer or employee was engaged in or on account of the performance of official duties and where the acts in violation of this section involve physical contact with the victim and the intent to commit another felony,” the indictment said.  [snip]

The warrant’s mentioning of “D.H.” is a reference to Daniel Hodges, an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington. At the doorway leading from the Capitol building to the inauguration terrace, Hodges and other officers were holding the line to prevent rioters from breaking through.

Video shared by the FBI shows Cappuccio grabbing Hodges’s gas mask and attempting to rip it off while the officer was in the doorway. Hodges and the FBI said Cappuccio also beat the officer with his own baton, leaving the officer bleeding from his mouth.

The FBI also announced another arrest and additional charges for another insurrectionist:

The FBI this week also arrested Dave Mehaffie, who was added as one of the defendants in Cappuccio’s superseding indictment. Mehaffie was known to online “Sedition Hunters” as #TunnelCommander because he was filmed issuing orders to rioters who were attacking officers at that same lower western entrance where Hodges was stationed.

Federal law enforcement also added to the indictment Frederico “Freddie” Klein, a State Department appointee in the Trump administration who had been previously charged. These three men join six others on the superseding indictment, including the original defendant Patrick Edward McCaughey III, who was filmed pressing a riot shield against Hodges.

On- line sedition hunters, as well as tips from social media, have played an important part in tracking down and bringing these fascist insurrectionists to heel. The FBI is still looking for many of the insurrectionist morons.  Check out their web site to see if anyone looks familiar.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists -- Cosplay "George Washington"

Cosplay "George Washington" became the latest deluded MAGAt sap to be arrested and charged by the FBI for his part in the January 6 insurrection:

A Nevada, Missouri, man has been arrested and charged for his role in the January 6, Capitol Insurrection. A warrant for arrest of Isaac Samuel Yoder was served on Wednesday, August 4th at Springfield, Missouri.

An online tip to the FBI National Threat Operations Center submitted on February 26, 2021 stated, “I was made aware that an individual that works at Yoder locksmith in Nevada Missouri was involved in the storming of the Capitol on Jan 6th. I am unsure of the gentleman’s first name but know the day of the event he was inside the Capitol and was dressed as George Washington.”

With this information, the FBI reviewed the business’ website and contact numbers and found an image of a man in colonial period attire captioned “Isaac & Kelly Yoder.”

After cross-referencing the website picture, a Missouri driver’s license photo, social media accounts, photographs from inside the Capitol, CCTV footage, and cell phone usage during the Insurrection the FBI ID’d the man as Yoder. [snip]

According to a complaint from the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, Yoder committed multiple violations against United States Code while at the Capitol.

In a March Newsweek interview, Yoder said

"Most of us out there are on the side of the aisle who are the gun owners. If we had collectively gone there to cause trouble there would have been piles of bodies. We could have leveled things."

Luckily, as we all know, no trouble was caused by the peaceful insurrectionists tourists, and no bodies were inconvenienced, much less killed.  But just think what might've happened if Yoder had brought his musket.

The FBI is still looking for many of the insurrectionist morons.  Check out their web site to see if anyone looks familiar.

(Photo: "George Washington" Yoder with Capitol Police officer:  "I cannot tell a lie -- we're only peaceful tourists.")

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: "Caesar No Salad" (A.K.A., Shartacus) Arrested

Score another takedown of a January 6 insurrectionist.  This time it's "Caesar No Salad" Nathan Wayne Entrekin (who, given his costume, we would also tag as "Shartacus"):

Nathan Wayne Entrekin, a man who wore a Roman gladiator costume to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot in support of former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, was arrested by federal authorities on Thursday.

Entrekin, whom online “sedition hunters” had dubbed “Caesar No Salad,” wore his costume to portray Captain Moroni, a figure from the Book of Mormon who ― as spelled out in Entrekin’s FBI affidavit ― “sought to defend the liberties of his people ― the Nephites ― from another group ― the Amalickiahites ― that wanted to overthrow democracy and install a king.” He was arrested in Cottonwood, Arizona.

A tipster contacted the FBI about Entrekin on Jan. 11, and the FBI was able to confirm his identity through “a review of public databases and open source intelligence (OSINT)” as well as an interview with Entrekin on Feb. 2.

The FBI got permission to search Entrekin’s phone. On it, they found videos of him narrating the scene for his mother (whom he lives with) about what he’s seeing at the Capitol.

“I’m here, Mom!” Entrekin says in one video. “This is my flag!”  (our emphasis)

Hi, Mom!  Watch me incriminate myself because you raised a doofus!  I'll be back home in your basement soon!  I am Shartacus!

"Captain Moron" would also apply here.

“Are we going up? This is a good workout. Forward, forward, forward,” he said. “I made it, Mom. I made it to the top. Mom, look, I made it to the top, to the top here. Look at all the patriots here. Haha, if I can make it up that, anybody can.”  (our emphasis)

Top of the world, ma!!

If you are so inclined, check out the FBI's database of images of wanted insurrectionists to see if you can identify any other threats to our democracy like Shartacus here.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists-- The Family That Treasons Together Goes To Jail Together

Five members of the Munn family were arrested by the FBI this week and charged with crimes related to the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.  As has been the case with many of the arrests, they were fingered by friends and acquaintances after letting slip their involvement on social media.  Time to Meet the Munns:

For five people arrested this week after they were charged by federal prosecutors for allegedly storming the U.S. Capitol, the Jan. 6 insurrection appeared to be a family affair.

The Munn family traveled from Borger, Tex., about 45 miles northeast of Amarillo, to Washington for the deadly riot, federal investigators said in a criminal complaint filed Monday.

Dawn and Thomas Munn, as well as their children Kristi, Kayli and Joshua Munn, were charged with disorderly conduct and illegally entering and parading in the Capitol. Another child, an unnamed minor, also entered the Capitol, investigators said, but was not charged.  [snip]

The Munn family’s alleged participation in the riot is part of a dynamic that has played out since Jan. 6, with many people reporting friends and family members they suspect participated in the insurrection to the FBI. A college freshman in Texas also reported his father for threatening to do “something big” before he stormed the Capitol.

According to authorities, Kristi Munn posted a photo on Facebook, before the Capitol was breached, that showed the family dressed in camouflage. It was captioned: “Washington D.C. here we come!!!" The family stayed in a hotel near Washington after driving 1,600 miles in 24 hours, Thomas Munn wrote in a Facebook post cited in the complaint.  [snip]

Teachers from a high school and a college in Borger who had taught some of the Munn family members also reviewed photos of the family and confirmed their identities.  [snip]

But in messages on Facebook obtained by investigators through search warrants, Kristi wrote to someone named Jarod on Jan. 7, “We were in the capital!!” She asked him to “keep that bit of info on the [down low] for right now.”

According to the complaint, she posted a status update the same day: “Tear gas tastes like freedom #StopTheSteal #TrumpIsMyPresident.” Someone commented asking if she knew that from experience. “I do now,” she replied.

In another message, Kristi wrote that she had taken so many videos of the riot that her phone ran out of storage. Instead, she used a minor child’s phone to record more. Investigators said it did not appear that this child traveled to Washington with the family.

Looking at the mugshots of four of the five Munns, it's easy to see it couldn't have taken much effort to get these gullible dimbulbs to swallow the "Stop the Steal" bullshit.

If you are so inclined, check out the FBI's database of images of wanted insurrectionists to see if you can identify any other threats to our democracy.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: "This Ain't Over"

A South Carolina couple were arrested yesterday in Hanahan, SC by the FBI and charged for their role in the January 6 Trumpist insurrection. John Getsinger, Jr., and his wife Stacie have been charged with entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building,  and violent entry and disorderly conduct while parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol Building. They're out on $75,000 unsecured bonds each, promising to appear in DC court when summoned (better put ankle monitors on them).

According to the complaint, the Getsingers were identified by four separate tipsters and by video where they are seen to proclaim, "this is war, we're storming the Capitol." Also, Stacie Getsinger had posted on her Facebook page, "the election was rigged, and this ain't over." It's over for you and your hubby, Stacie. You shouldn't have believed your lying Dear Leader. Sad!

A reminder that you can do America a big favor by checking the photos and videos of the January 6 domestic terrorists on the FBI site, or the photos at the commendable Sedition Hunters site.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: A Burberry Boy And A Proud Boy

Two more dimwitted Trump insurrectionists have been brought to heel, Proud Boy Shawn "Storm Leader" Price and Christian "Burberry Boy" Kulas.

Here's the rundown on Storm Leader Price:

Shawn Price, 26, of Rockaway, New Jersey, is a self-described member of the Proud Boys and held a leadership position in the extremist group’s northern New Jersey chapter, according to court documents. He was charged with six federal offenses over his alleged role in the attack and made his first court appearance in his home state Tuesday afternoon.  [snip]

Price was seen in photos taken at the Capitol’s lower west terrace as a crowd pushed toward police as officers fired chemical irritants, the affidavit said. Price reportedly wore goggles.

In messages to another Facebook user identified as L.H.P., whom law enforcement understood to be his mother, Price wrote that he “led the storm” of the Capitol. Price allegedly sent her a video in which he calls U.S. Capitol Police “fucking scumbags” for shooting chemical irritants at the mob on the grounds of the Capitol. The Facebook user identified as Price’s mother asked him when he was heading home and told him to “get out of there” and to “try washing... with baby shampoo” to help with the pepper spray.

Price is facing misdemeanor charges along with felony charges for obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder and obstruction of justice. (our emphasis)

Hopefully, in the future Price can practice storming the showers in a Federal prison.

The other arrestee is Christian "Burberry Boy" KulasHere's his story:

A man from one of Chicago’s richest suburbs was arrested and charged Tuesday with unlawfully entering the U.S. Capitol and engaging in disorderly conduct on Jan. 6.

Christian Kulas, 24, of Kenilworth, wore a Burberry coat and a Keep America Great cap as he documented his movements around the Capitol grounds and inside the building in a series of Instagram stories, federal authorities alleged in court documents. He faces two misdemeanor charges, which carry significantly lesser sentences or penalties than criminal counts.  [snip]

Another video from that account shows the inside of the building and a male voice can be heard saying, “Storming the Capitol.” The FBI said it interviewed an individual who went to middle school and high school with Kulas who was “highly confident” that it was Kulas’ voice.

Kulas appeared in additional video footage from a variety of sources “wearing the same hat and Burberry coat” inside the Capitol, the affidavit said.

Kulas appeared before a federal court in Chicago on Tuesday afternoon in a hearing conducted by phone. As part of his release conditions, he must remain in his mother’s custody at his parents’ home in Kenilworth. According to Chicago’s WGN9, public records indicate that home is a $4.5 million mansion overlooking Lake Michigan.

Kulas’ mother agreed to supervise him and ensure he followed the conditions of his release. His father was also ordered to remove two firearms from the home.

“Yes, I understand I must listen to everything my mother says, your honor,” Kulas told the judge, per WGN9. (our  emphasis)

You keep a good eye on him, Mother Kulas! He's been a bad boy!

Here's Price (top) and Kulas:

"The GOP Betrayed America" On January 6

A powerful new video from MeidasTouch was released yesterday, targeting the betrayal of our democracy by Republicans, who want voters to forget the violent insurrection on January 6 that their cult leader instigated. The attempted coverup continued with yesterday's disgraceful vote, but there are means for Congress to get at the details of what happened, which is why a select committee needs to be appointed. Watch and share widely:

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: Legendary!

More proof that the January 6 insurrectionists are "brain damaged":

After posting a series of videos to social media appearing to show himself and others being tear gassed storming the Capitol building, an accused rioter boasted about “fighting riot police,” federal investigators wrote in a criminal complaint unsealed Friday.

According to the charging documents, Leonard Pearso Ridge IV posted at least five videos from the siege at the U.S. Capitol that enabled the FBI to identify him, adding to the growing list of rioters whose social media bluster about participating in the insurrection have filled the pages of court documents.

“Let’s go, let’s go. Get in this Bitch,” Ridge allegedly yelled in one of the first Jan. 6 videos he uploaded to Snapchat. The FBI says the videos placed him among the pro-Donald Trump mob making its way up the Capitol steps.  (our emphasis)

Subsequent videos depicted Ridge inside the Capitol building, authorities say.

"Fighting riot police": 10 years max and $2,500.  Memorializing your criminality in videos:  priceless.

Also, legends aren't what they used to be:

On the night of the siege, the same Snapchat user contacted Ridge again calling him a “legend” for storming the Capitol, the FBI says.

“I just made history,” Ridge allegedly responded. “Yeah just stormed the US capital [sic] for the first time in US history and I was a part of it.”

When the user said he hoped the day “goes down in history and isn’t erased,” Ridge allegedly claimed there was video of him physically assaulting law enforcement officers.

“Yeah man so epic I have a video of me fighting riot police in the capital [sic] building,” Ridge allegedly wrote, adding, “Just pray for me that I don’t get arrested by the FBI.” He was arrested in Pennsylvania on Friday.  [Ed.: So much for thoughts and prayers.]

After mentioning the possibility that the FBI could be looking for him, Ridge claimed that he “just walked into the capital [sic] to record and did not break anything or steal anything,” but seemingly contradicted that notion soon thereafter, writing, “We bro [sic] down McConnell’s door and nancy pelosios [sic] door and rad the offices,” according to the complaint(our emphasis)

He seems bright.

He's also facing charges of "obstructing an official proceeding, restricted building and grounds and disorderly conduct" (so far).

It's becoming increasingly clear the former guy really didn't have to try very hard to get his MAGA morons to do what they did on January 6.  They're legends of stupidity.

Tracking Down The Insurrectionists: A "Brain Damaged" Twofer

As further proof of the attorney for the low-IQnon shaman's claim that the January 6 insurrectionists were "people with brain damage," we give you this doofus:

A New York man who faces charges in the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol was caught after someone overheard him discussing the event at the dentist, according to federal court documents.

Daniel Warmus, of Buffalo, is charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building, knowingly and with intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of government business or official functions, and violent entry. He was arrested Tuesday.

According to a statement of facts sheet from the FBI, a tipster contacted federal investigators after hearing Warmus talk about his Jan. 6 actions at the dentist office. The witness told authorities Warmus said he "breached the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021, and smoked a marijuana cigarette while inside the building."

Then there's this Floriduh man:

Daniel Paul Gray of Florida was charged today with multiple crimes of violence against police officers at the January 6 Capitol riot. Supporting photographic evidence is a video made by Gray that spells out the goal of "pushing police out the back of the Capitol."

Gray is accused of having altercations with multiple police, one in which he caused a female police officer to fall down the western rotunda stairs "and became visibly injured."

Gray bragged about it all in a self-shot monologue, the FBI said. Gray's pride in having carried out the attack on law enforcement -- and the boast that "this is far from over -- was captured on his video. [snip]

Gray, whose last known place of employment was X3 Fitness, according to the FBI, had used Facebook and Instagram to post about "his dissatisfaction with the election and…improprieties surrounding the election.

Among his Facebook prose on December 12, Gray had stated "F*ck this election this is the biggest scandal of my lifetime" and "militia finna be lit y'all!!" and "Sh*ts about to get lit y'all. I'm actually really excited at the possibility of the insurrection act being implemented."

His shit got lit, all right.

Have fun in prison, assholes, and remember the evergreen Hackwackers advisory: don't bend over in the showers.

Bipartisan January 6 Commission Bill To Be Introduced In House

Here's part of a press release just issued by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, on a bill he plans to introduce with Ranking Member John Katko (R-NY) to establish a "Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the Capitol":

  • The Commission will be charged with studying the facts and circumstances surrounding the facts and circumstances of the January 6th attack on the Capitol as well as the influencing factors that may have provoked the attack on our democracy.
  • Like the 9/11 Commission, the measure establishes a 10-person bipartisan commission with five commissioners, including the Chair, appointed by the Speaker of the House and Majority Leader of the Senate and five commissioners, including the Vice Chair, be appointed by the Minority Leaders of the House and Senate.
  • Commissioners must have significant expertise in the areas of law enforcement, civil rights, civil liberties, privacy, intelligence, and cybersecurity. Current government officers or employees are prohibited from appointment.
  • Like the 9/11 Commission, the Commission will be granted authority to issue subpoenas to secure information to carry out its investigation but requires agreement between the Chair and the Vice Chair or a vote by a majority of Commission members.
  • The Commission will be required to issue a final report with findings regarding the facts and causes of the attack, along with recommendations to prevent future attacks on our democratic institutions, by December 31, 2021.

This stands an excellent chance of passing the House with votes from both sides of the aisle and, we would speculate, a better than even chance of passing in the Senate.

Tracking Down The Seditionists: Trump Appointee Arrested

Doesn't sound like Antifa to us:

On Thursday, the FBI arrested a political appointee of former president Donald Trump on charges that he stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, according to a criminal complaint, marking the first member of the administration arrested in connection with the insurrection.

Federal agents arrested Federico G. Klein, 42, a former State Department aide, on multiple felony charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, according to a criminal complaint published by the New York Times. (Politico first reported the arrest.) The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Friday.

Klein, who is also a former Trump campaign employee, did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Friday. It is unclear if he has hired a lawyer.

Klein was still employed at the State Department as a staff assistant on Jan. 6 when he joined a mob in a tunnel leading into the U.S. Capitol, the FBI said. Then he allegedly “physically and verbally engaged with the officers holding the line” at the building’s entrance, according to the complaint. After ignoring officers’ orders to move back, he assaulted officers with a riot shield that had been stolen from police, the complaint said, and then used the shield to wedge open a door into the Capitol.

At one point, Klein was caught on video shouting for more insurrectionists to come to the front lines, where officers were struggling to hold back the mob.

“We need fresh people, need fresh people,” he said, according to the complaint.  (our emphasis)

The first member of the Trump assministration to be arrested, but probably not the last.

Lock him up (and throw away the key!) !

(While you're here, take a look at the terrorists's photos at the FBI site, scroll down and see if there's anyone you might recognize. Then contact the FBI).

Hearings On Capitol Security Breach Begin

A series of hearings in the Senate and House begin today to address the security failures manifested during the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.  Here are the schedules:

Tuesday, February 23:

Wednesday, February 24:

  • Who: House Judiciary Committee, domestic terrorism experts
  • Focus: This hearing will narrow in more on the warning signs and signals prior to the attack on the Capitol and hear more from experts.

Thursday, February 25:

  • Who: House Financial Services Committee
  • Focus: Titled "Dollars Against Democracy: Domestic Terrorist Financing in the Aftermath of the Insurrection," this hearing will look at the financial impact of the insurrection and at policing and security measures.

All hearings start at 10 a.m. EST each day.

These hearings are not to be confused with the 9/11- style independent commission that Speaker Pelosi has called for and which will have a more comprehensive mission, including "the facts and causes" of the January 6 insurrection (eg., Mango Mussolini's role in inciting the mob, and ties with right- wing domestic terrorist networks).

Monday Reading (UPDATED)

As always, please go to the links for the full articles/ op eds.

Should there be any doubt whose incompetence has led to the vaccine shortage we're experiencing now, read this report from Stat:

Top Trump officials actively lobbied Congress to deny state governments any extra funding for the Covid-19 vaccine rollout last fall — despite frantic warnings from state officials that they didn’t have the money they needed to ramp up a massive vaccination operation.

The push, described to STAT by congressional aides in both parties and openly acknowledged by one of the Trump officials, came from multiple high-ranking Trump health officials in repeated meetings with legislators.

Without the extra money, states spent last October and November rationing the small pot of federal dollars they had been given. And when vaccines began shipping in December, states seemed woefully underprepared.

The previously unreported lobbying efforts underscore that even after the Trump administration spent billions helping drug makers develop Covid-19 vaccines, it not only dismissed states’ concerns about the help they would need to roll them out, but actively undermined their efforts to press Congress to get the funding they needed.

Much of the lobbying push came from Paul Mango, the former deputy chief of staff for policy at the Department of Health and Human Services. He argued, repeatedly, that states hadn’t demonstrated they needed additional funding because, at least as of last October, they hadn’t spent the $200 million that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent to states in September.

There's much more at the link worth reading.  Not getting your shots?  Thanks, Trump!

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the January 6 "Stop the Steal" rally that was the immediate catalyst for the Capitol insurrection had financial backing from one thug familiar to most and a sugar momma (WSJ paywall, so this is part of a Vox summary):

A Wall Street Journal investigation has found a number of key allies of former President Donald Trump — including far-right media personality Alex Jones and Julie Jenkins Fancelli, heir to the Publix supermarket fortune — helped to fund the rally that preceded the storming of the US Capitol on January 6 that left five dead.

According to reporters Shalini Ramachandran, Alexandra Berzon, and Rebecca Ballhaus, Jones pledged $50,000 of his own money to the event, and organized additional funds, including a $300,000 contribution from Jenkins Fancelli, who is a major GOP donor.

All told, the rally cost about $500,000, according to the report. That event, during which Trump pledged to never concede the November election to President Joe Biden — and whipped up supporters who later took over the Capitol — formed the basis of Trump’s second impeachment in the House of Representatives. In part due to comments he made at that rally, Trump has been charged with “incitement of insurrection,” and will soon face a trial in the Senate.

The Journal also reports that, according to Federal Election Commission records, “at least five former Trump campaign staffers” were involved in the logistics of the event. The rally was particularly lucrative for Trump fundraising official Caroline Wren, who was paid $730,000 throughout the 2020 election cycle for her and her firm to work on fundraising for the Trump reelection campaign team, according to the Journal.

But there was another critical fascist faction laying the groundwork for the insurrection, as Sarah Posner points out:

Coverage of the Capitol insurrection has focused on such far-right instigators as the White supremacist Proud Boys and the Three Percenters, a militia group. But a reconstruction of the weeks leading up Jan. 6 shows how a Christian-right group formed to “stop the steal” worked to foment a bellicose Christian narrative in defense of Trump’s coup attempt and justify a holy war against an illegitimate state. In late November, two federal workers, Arina Grossu – who had previously worked for the Christian-right advocacy group Family Research Council – and Rob Weaver, formed a new Christian right group, the Jericho March. The new group’s goal, according to a news release announcing its launch, was to “prayerfully protest and call on government officials to cast light on voter fraud, corruption, and suppression of the will of the American people in this election.” In fact, the Jericho March would help lay the groundwork for the insurrection.  (our emphasis)

It's a great read that exposes the role not just the talibangelist hustlers like Paula White and Franklin Graham, but  groups like "Jericho March" that have been under the radar for most casual observers.   Their phony patina of being a "peaceful prayer" movement is only a cover, while their shock troops plan violence to attain their end of one- party, theocratic rule. (Chrissy Stroop has another look at these Christofascists here. And Rachel Mikva, too.)

As State Republican Parties descend into QAnon quackery and ramped- up voter suppression initiatives, the stakes for our democracy will hinge on passage of the new Voting Rights Act (H.R. 1) in the Senate. Ron Brownstein explains why this means the filibuster must go:

The party’s immediate political fate in the 2022 and 2024 elections is likely to turn mostly on whether Joe Biden can successfully control the coronavirus outbreak—restarting the economy and returning a sense of normalcy to daily life. But the contours of American politics just over that horizon, through 2030 and beyond, will be determined even more by whether Democrats can establish new national standards for the conduct of elections through a revised Voting Rights Act and sweeping legislation known as H.R. 1, which would set nationwide voting rules, limit “dark money” campaign spending, and ban gerrymandering of congressional districts. With both bills virtually guaranteed to pass the House, as they did in the last Congress, their fate will likely turn on whether Senate Democrats are willing to end the filibuster to approve them over Republican opposition on a simple-majority vote.

That decision carries enormous consequences for the future balance of power between the parties: The number of younger and diverse voters participating in future elections will likely be much greater if these laws pass than if they don’t, especially with state-level Republicans already pushing a new round of laws making it tougher to vote based on Donald Trump’s discredited claims of election fraud in 2020. Given those stakes, the Democrats’ voting-rights agenda is quickly becoming a focal point of the pressure from left-leaning activists to end the filibuster. “Our grass roots will not accept the notion that we had good intentions, but we just failed” to pass these laws, Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, a Democrat who is the lead sponsor of the Senate companion to H.R. 1, told me.

We're optimistic Democrats will use their power to counter the anti- democratic actions of the anti- democratic Republican Party -- January 6 changed everything.

A cautionary tale from Myanmar:  when you try to ride the tiger, you often end up inside:

Aung San Suu Kyi defended Myanmar's generals against genocide charges at The Hague. She praised soldiers as they unleashed artillery against ethnic minority settlements. She took only modest steps toward democratic changes that would chip away at the army's political power.

It wasn’t enough.

On Monday, Myanmar’s military seized power in a coup, detaining Suu Kyi, elected ministers from her National League for Democracy (NLD) party and others in a predawn raid. Though condemned internationally for defending the military and its campaign against the Rohingya minority, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who spent 15 years under house arrest until 2010 now finds herself again at the generals’ mercy.
