Quote of the Day - Constitushunal Expert Sarah Palin Edition

"She wasn't a particularly good vice presidential candidate.  She's an even worse judge of who ought to be impeached and why."  -  Attorney General Eric Holder today on snowbilly grifter and word- salad- shooter Sarah Palin's recent assertion that President Obama should be impeached.

UPDATE:  Delusional winger Sean "Heil" Hannity agrees with fellow Constitushunal expert Palin.  Surprised?

Sunday Reading - Corporate Tax Dodging

In this morning's once great Washington Post Bezos Bugle, Allan Sloan has an informative column about a growing number of tax-dodging American corporations reincorporating overseas where the corporate tax rate is lower, a process known as "inversion."  Here's Sloan:
A company does this by reincorporating in a place such as Ireland, where the corporate tax rate is 12.5 percent, compared with 35 percent in the United States. Inversion also makes it easier to divert what would normally be U.S. earnings to foreign, lower-tax locales. But being legal isn’t the same as being right. If a few companies invert, it’s irritating but no big deal for our society. But mass inversion is a whole other thing, and that’s where we’re heading.  [snip]
Inverters don’t hesitate to take advantage of the great things that make America America: our deep financial markets, our democracy and rule of law, our military might, our intellectual and physical infrastructure, our national research programs, all the terrific places our country offers for employees and their families to live. But inverters do hesitate — totally — when it’s time to ante up their fair share of financial support of our system.
Sloan names some of the "deserters:"
Companies that have gone the inversion or never-here route but that act American include household names such as Garmin, Michael Kors, Carnival and Nielsen. Pfizer, the giant pharmaceutical company, tried to invert this spring, but the deal fell through. Medtronic, the big medical-device company, is trying to invert, of which more later. Walgreens is talking about inverting, too — it’s easier to boost earnings by playing tax games than by fixing the way you run your stores.  [Ed. note:  Snap, zing!]
As promised, he goes into great detail about the proposed Medtronic inversion.  Here's the scheme they're considering:
The current poster child for inversion outrage is Medtronic, the multinational Minnesota medical-device company that once exuded a cleaner-than-clean image but now proposes to move its nominal headquarters to Ireland by paying a fat premium price to buy Covidien, itself a faux-Irish firm that is run from Massachusetts except for income-tax-paying purposes. For that, it is based in Dublin. That’s where the new Medtronic PLC would be based, while its real headquarters would remain on Medtronic Parkway in Minneapolis. Of course, the company is unlikely to return any of the $484 million worth of contracts the federal government says it has awarded Medtronic over the past five years.
Unless you suffer from high blood pressure, read the column to see what goodies Medtronics is giving its top executives and board members to grease the inversion skids.

Sloan also offers some ideas to fix the problem in the short term (tighten inversion rules in the tax code, as proposed by Sen. Carl Levin and his brother, Rep. Sander Levin - both Michigan Democrats), while we await (and await and await?) corporate tax reform.  Another short term fix Sloan proposes is disclosure - requiring American corporations and their subsidiaries to report on "their U.S. taxable income for a given year and how much income tax they owed."   If more of these companies can be publicly shamed by their tax-dodging, it might help stem the growing culture in which "inversion" (or, as we would call it "corporate mooching") is accepted as normal business practice (as Sloan points out, it worked with Starbucks).

In the end, though, public shaming is not a substitute for better public policy.  If these tax-dodging corporations have no sense of what it means to be a responsible corporate citizen, and we think most of them don't, then it's government's obligation to act in the interests of all the American people to shut down this shell game.

Oops, He's Running Again!

Step 1.   Wear glasses to give the impression you've got a brain;

Step 2.    Play to the base and pout when you're face-to-face with the President;  and (because we can keep three points in our head at one time)

Step 3.   Have someone pen an op/ed for you to run in the once great Washington Post Bezos Bugle (which will publish anything), attacking a potential rival for the Rethuglican/ New Confederate/ Stupid Party nomination for not wanting to go back into Iraq with guns blazin'.

Yep.  Future Lenscrafters and hair products spokesperson Gov. Rick "Oops" Perry (Secessionist-TX) is running for preznit!  More popcorn over here!

(Image:  Sans glasses.  Given his vision problems, he'll eventually end up shooting himself in the foot.)

President's Weekly Address - Expanding Opportunity (And Republican Obstruction)

Here's one of several money quotes:
I’ve taken actions to attract new jobs, lift workers’ wages, help students pay off their loans, and more. And the Republican plan right now is not to do some of this work with me—instead, it’s to sue me. That’s actually what they’re spending their time on. It’s a political stunt that’s going to waste months of America’s time. And by the way, they’re going to pay for it using your hard-earned tax dollars.
The basis for Weeper of the House John "Mr. Tangerine Man" Boehner's threatened law suit?  The President's failure to implement the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") quickly enough. Hawhawhaw.

Great Moments in Predictions

Florida Sen. Marco "Glug Glug" Rubio posted this tweet on July 8, predicting that Miami Heat star LeBron James would remain in Miami:

Less than three days later, Glug Glug's prediction fell as flat as his Presidential hopes, when James announced his move to Cleveland:

Weekend Birthday Song

Happy birthday today to our San Francisco bureau chief!!   We love you! Keep digging for stories ; ) ! You happen to share a birthday with the talented Suzanne Vega, so we thought it appropriate to feature this song, 1987's "Luka," for your joint birthdays.  Have a great day (wish we were there!).

If you don't think the Rethuglicans will pile on Hillary (Benghazi, Benghazi! BENGHAZI!!, brain damage, etc.), read the post below.

The Caucus Room Conspiracy, 2014 Edition

Congressional Rethuglicans and their enablers have tried almost everything in the last 5 plus years to undermine and destroy the Obama Administration, and with it the nation's first African-American President.  They've tried filibusters in the Senate, shutting down the Federal Government,  and voting "no" on every major piece of legislation that Obama's proposed.  Obama followed eight years of Rethuglican mismanagement and corruption:  the 9-11 attack predicted a month earlier and briefed to Dumbya, a war launched on false premises known at the time to be false, the response to Hurricane Katrina, and the greatest financial and economic free-fall since the Great Depression, etc.

In January 2009, the Rethuglican / Stupid Party was in free-fall along with the economy. Their "solution" to avoiding political oblivion was to make President Obama fail as his Rethug predecessor had failed.  Thus, on the evening of Obama's inauguration, Rethuglican Congressional leaders gathered at an expensive DC restaurant, The Caucus Room, to plan Obama's political demise:
"On January 20, 2009, a night when most Americans were out celebrating the end of the Bush years and the beginning of a new era, a group of powerful Republicans was planning the end of Obama presidency before it even really began.

At the Caucus Room restaurant right here in Washington, DC, GOP leaders drew up a plan to intentionally sabotage Obama at every point possible.

On the guest list for the 'invitation only' meeting were Republican Congressmen Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, Pete Sessions, Jeb Hensarling, Pete Hoekstra and Dan Lungren. Republican Senators Jim DeMint, Jon Kyl, Tom Coburn, John Ensign and Bob Corker were also in attendance. The whole thing was orchestrated by Republican propaganda mastermind Frank Luntz.

Over the course of four hours, this group of the most powerful conservative lawmakers in the country committed to a plan of action. They promised each other that they would filibuster and obstruct any and all legislation supported by the new President Obama." (emphasis added)
So the Caucus Room Conspiracy continues, with talk of suing the President and even impeachment by the flakier elements of the right.  Anyone expecting a change with the election of a Democratic President in 2016 would be mistaken:  this is about the corruption of power, dirty money and political nihilism practiced by the Rethuglican Party, period.

More Rethug Mischief in Florida

Any Rethuglican / New Confederate Party path to electoral victory in the years ahead can't be based on their increasingly radical ideas or the changing demographic.  Instead of the electorate choosing them, they want to choose the electorate.  They're doing it in different ways:  rigging voting laws to suppress turnout unfavorable to them -- including eliminating early voting and reducing the number of polling stations -- and redrawing Congressional districts to maximize their electability are just two of the most obvious.  Added to that is an open sewer of unaccounted for money from oligarchs that want Government to serve them.

In Florida, a State circuit court judge has put a halt to one attempt to redraw Congressional districts to tilt the playing field in favor of the Rethuglicans.   The Rethuglican-controlled Florida state legislature redrew the 5th and 10th Congressional districts in 2012, a move that Judge Terry Lewis said "made a mockery" of legislation designed to ensure fair redistricting, and blasted Rethug operatives for their roles:
“'Republican political consultants or operatives did, in fact, conspire to manipulate and influence the redistricting process,' the judge wrote. At another point, he quoted George Washington, who warned of 'cunning, ambitious and unprincipled men.'” (New York Times)
They know they can't win elections on their toxic brew of bigotry and Social Darwinism, so they'll resort to every deception, trick and intimidation to compensate.  "Cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men" fits them perfectly.

Mess On The Border

The Obama Administration is trying to discourage further influxes of women and children from making the dangerous trip from Central America into the U.S., causing a humanitarian crisis on our borders.  Ads are running in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras urging people not to attempt the dangerous and probably futile trip.  For the most part, they're escaping dangerous situations in their countries, and are being exploited by human trafficker cartels.

The President is proposing a $3.7 billion package of humanitarian aid and increased border security, along with expedited processing for those seeking residence for humanitarian reasons.  He's getting pressure from the right, which has cynically refused any cooperation on immigration reform, to turn the immigrants back without due process.  He's also getting pressure from others who want a show of concern and compassion with a Presidential visit to the border camps.  What he doesn't need is pressure from a ConservaDem like Rep. Henry Cuellar (Fake D-TX), who has referred to the situation as "Obama's Katrina moment," to visit the area (no doubt with Cuellar sharing the spotlight).  Cuellar, a favorite of the right-wing Club for Growth, votes 60% of the time with Rethugs,  and was an early supporter of Dumbya's 2000 Presidential run, can't be trusted for advice to the President.

Hurt Feewings Picture of the Day

We would have liked to have been in the room during this part of President Obama's meeting yesterday with Texas Gov. and future LensCrafters spokesman Rick "Hair" Perry (top left), who seems to be putting on a pouty face while the President is laughing  -- possibly at something Gov. Hair said.  Also, do you think he could have sat any further away from the President and still been in the room?  Next time, get a high chair for Gov. Hair.

Healthy Figures for "Obamacare"

As with everything the President has initiated, the Rethuglicans desperately wanted to sabotage the Affordable Care Act.  Round the clock lying ("death panels," "socialized medicine," etc.) and the 2012 elections didn't stop the Act from being implemented (although the botched roll-out was bad enough).

Now, there's new evidence from the Commonwealth Fund that the ACA has reduced the number of uninsured from 20 percent of the working population to 15 percent, and that the people under age 65 who have new insurance thanks to the ACA are overwhelmingly pleased (73 percent).  More surprising is that 74 percent of Republicans obtaining new health insurance are pleased.  That should dampen whatever enthusiasm Rethug politicos still have for running against "Obamacare" in 2014.  Should.

Ripped From the Headlines

The Onion has today's food for thought:

Sonny Corleone Would Still Be Alive Today If He Had E-ZPass

Mid-Week Song

The Shins, an indie rock group now based in Portland, OR,  have a lovely, melodic sound, and broke through the top 10 with 2012's "Simple Song."  Their latest song can be heard on the soundtrack of "Wish I Was Here," a movie premiering next week with Kate Hudson and Zach Braff.  Enjoy.

Voices

When someone talks about the voices in his head, it's usually time to phone the mental health number.  Our modern-day Lonesome Rhodes, nut ball Glenn "Dreck" Beck, is hearing those voices -- again -- and wants his flock of sheeple to know that they will "save the world," and that this message "has come directly from God."

Perhaps Dreck is back on the drugs he once relied on to hallucinate through his miserable days, or, much more likely, he's scamming the rubes that hang on every demented schtick he spins.  He needs to tell his sheeple that some day they're going to be in charge, not today, not tomorrow, just ….some day.  Just keep listening to Lonesome Rhodes Dreck for instructions until then.
