The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The good:

... Trump’s campaign says it has raised $7.1 million since he was processed at an Atlanta jail on Thursday night for attempting to overturn the Georgia election, according to figures first reported by Politico. On Friday, Trump raised $4.18 million—more than any other day of his campaign.

The fundraising haul has been fueled in part by the campaign’s sale of mugshot-adorned T-shirts, mugs, and more that read, “NEVER SURRENDER.”

Following his arrest on Thursday, Trump returned to X, formerly known as Twitter, for the first time in more than two years, posting his mugshot and directing supporters to his campaign website. “What has taken place is a travesty of justice and ELECTION INTERFERENCE,” the site claims. He asked his supporters donate to the campaign to “evict Crooked Joe Biden from the White House and SAVE AMERICA during this dark chapter in our nation’s history.”

The haul demonstrates Trump’s success in turning his four indictments into fundraising ammo. Over the past three weeks, during which Trump was indicted in Washington, DC, on charges related to his role in the January 6 riot and arrested in Georgia on charges of attempting to subvert the election, the campaign has brought in nearly $20 million—more than half of what it raised during Trump’s first seven months in the 2024 race.

Spoiler alert:  these funds are going to the lawyers defending the "billionaire" Malignant Loser in four jurisdictions, because he won't use any of his own.  As others have noted, at this point his "campaign" and legal strategy (staying out of jail) are one and the same.   So why is this good?  Every rube sucker that still believes in this world- class charlatan and felon, and that sends his or her Social Security check or depletes his or her bank account to support him is pounding it down a rat hole.   It won't keep him out of the slammer, and it won't make him President again.  It doesn't go to the GQP.  It doesn't go to Senatorial and Congressional races, so we say:  Good!  Keep it up you delusional MAGAts!

BONUS:  Scott Lemieux on the Malignant Loser's biggest lickspittles "Going broke for the Donald."

The bad:

Former Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday the No Labels group intends to select a presidential ticket in April in Dallas.

Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” Lieberman told host Shannon Bream: “We already have scheduled a bipartisan convention. Think about it. We haven’t seen that ever in recent history. A bipartisan nominating convention for Dallas, Texas, in April of next year.”

Lieberman is the founding chair of No Labels. He said the centrist group’s top priority is qualifying for the ballot in every state.

“Right now, we’re focused first on what’s most important: On getting on the ballot with a third line in all 50 states that we will then offer and give to a bipartisan unity ticket,” he told Bream.

Lieberman, who was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000 as well as a longtime senator from Connecticut, said polling indicates the country is open to a possible presidential candidate who is neither President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump.

“Our plan is to only run if we think we have a chance to win realistically,” he said. “And look, we just finished a poll of 10,000 voters in the eight battleground states. And we give them a choice of Trump, Biden and a moderate independent third choice, and 63 percent say that they’re open to a moderate Independent third choice.”

Lieberman did not say how the No Labels movement would select a presidential ticket or who might be considered, but said: “We think there’s a real opportunity for a third choice.”

Democrats have characterized No Labels as an effort that could lead to a return to the White House by Trump...

In the future, the less said about Joe Lieberliar and his ego- driven band of cynical, washed- up pols the better.  They don't have "a chance to win realistically," but that won't stop them from raising money from Republican donors and lining their pockets.

The ugly:

A senior board member of the parent organization behind the prominent Conservative Political Action Conference who resigned on Friday urged an independent investigation into additional allegations of sexual misconduct against Chairman Matt Schlapp.

The vice chairman of the board of the American Conservative Union, Charlie Gerow, announced his resignation on Friday in a letter to other directors that called on them to authorize an investigation including any additional allegations that they or staff have become aware of, according to multiple people familiar with the letter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

Earlier this year, Schlapp was sued for alleged sexual battery and defamation by a Republican campaign operative who claimed that the CPAC leader groped his crotch during a campaign trip last fall. Schlapp has denied the claim.

In addition to that lawsuit, some board members and staffers have been told about other incidents involving Schlapp, 55, and two younger men, multiple people with direct knowledge of the situation said.

In one incident, a staffer said Schlapp attempted to kiss him while drinking late after a work function in 2017. The staffer also provided documentation from that night to The Washington Post showing physical contact that the staffer said was unsolicited.

In another incident, Schlapp allegedly made unwanted physical advances on someone else’s employee during a CPAC business trip in Palm Beach, Fla., in early 2022, according to multiple people informed of the incident. The alleged victim did not respond to requests for comment...

Schlapp and his fellow grifting wife Mercedes (former Malignant Loser Director of Strategic Communications) are among the most vile bottom- dwellers in the CPAC/ MAGAt sewer.  As with so many others of his kind, when the public hypocrisy that shrouds the private life is revealed, it's a "surprised not surprised" moment.

Tweets Of The Day - The Odd Couple

All the talk at the crusty white people's Conservative Political Action Conference today was about the joint appearance by the Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar of the alt- right, Steve "Loose Cannon" Bannon and Reince "Prepuce" Priebus.  Fighting off rumors that they're continually stabbing each other in the back to gain more power in Trumpland, they may have taken the buddy buddy act a bit too far:

But, apparently, permission doesn't go both ways:

Perhaps this is why Priebus reacted as he did:

Tweets Of The Day - WWJD

The collection of crusty misfits, knuckledraggers, xenophobes, bigots, misogynists and Bible bangers (we're sure we left out a few descriptors) gathering at the Conservative Political Action Conference starting today has shown that it was willing to tolerate the likes of vicious troll Milo Yiannopoulos, so one shouldn't be surprised at this agenda item:

Some of our favorite responses to those clever douches at CPAC:

Lastly, is that Pope Francis weighing in?

CPAC Summed Up In One Paragraph

Charles P. Pierce's reaction to snowbilly grifter Sarah "Winky" Palin's word salad remarks to the assembled mouth-breathers at the recently-concluded CPAC gathering (wherein she read a take-off on Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham") could well serve as a summary of the entire nutfest:
A friend bailed on the [Palin] speech, making the very plausible case that Palin is simply another political celebrity freakshow, like Donald Trump. I can see the point there but, with Palin, and watching the hysterical reception her puerile screed received, there is something more serious going on. She is the living representation of the infantilization of American politics, a poisonous Grimm Sister telling toxic fairy tales to audiences drunk on fear, and hate and nonsense. She respects no standards but her own. She is in perpetual tantrum, railing against her betters, which is practically everyone, and volunteering for the job of avatar to the country's reckless vandal of a political Id. It was the address of a malignant child delivered to an audience of malignant children. If you applauded, you're an idiot and I feel sorry for you. (our emphasis)
Another useful way to put it all in a (pun intended) nut shell:  for the second year in a row, Sen. Rand "Aqua Buddha" Paul (Illibertarian-KY) won the CPAC straw poll, with Sen. "Tailgunner Ted" Cruz (Crackpot-Canada TX) finishing second.

CPAC Roundup

The annual Nutfest Clown Show Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) wrapped up with snowbilly grifter and failed reality show C-list celeb Sarah "Winky" Palin speaking to her adoring, mouth-breathing fans.  Michael Moynihan has a nice summary of the CPAC goings on, with Palin as the standard-bearer for the bitter, dead- enders:
... Palin isn’t in the ideas business. She is, as loudly reaffirmed in her CPAC speech, a peddler of resentment, and a worldview of conservative victimology obsessively focused on the media gatekeepers and corrupt political consultants they see distorting a political message that, if not interfered with by liberal ideologues, would be embraced by most all Americans. It’s a common theme at CPAC: it’s not our ideas, it’s how the media distorts our ideas. Circling the conference center was a truck sponsored by the Media Research Center, a conservative watchdog group, displaying the message that the “liberal media” was “censoring the news.”
Yeah, "the liberal media" -- as if.  The Bubble in which these reactionaries live was also on display when Palin made an Obama teleprompter joke (so 2010!) while reading from a teleprompter...  There is no irony in The Bubble.

The Circus Is In Town

It's time for that annual fap-fest, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC - or Crack-Pot Action Conference, if you prefer) here in Washington, D.C. As ever, there's the usual assortment of protozoan life forms (here it comes): birthers, tenthers, one-percenters and their stooges, talibangelists, homophobes, racists, yahoos, gun fetishists, hate-radio sociopaths, neo-con Israel-firsters, and teatards -- both the grifter class and the knuckle-draggers they manipulate; a fractured coalition with one mission: limit the Kenyan usurper to one term. HuffPo has a good live blog covering the sordid details.

But it seems there's no joy in Dudville. The choice among Willard "One Percent" Romney, Newt "Moonbeam" Gingrich, Rick "Frothy Mix" Santorum and Ron "Crazy Uncle" Paul leaves your average Rethug somewhat colder than usual. Pity that.

Meanwhile, the doughy, gimlet-eyed crazies at CPAC are giving the rest of us plenty to observe (from a clinical standpoint that is):

-- you have your White Nationalists mingling in the nearly all-white conference, with organizers struggling to keep the racists in the big tent of the conservative movement while not attracting too much media attention;

-- you have your self-loathing closeted gay Rethugs taking time off from gay-bashing to boost the local male escort business (don't worry, Gov. Perry, Rep. Dreier, and Matt Drudge, we're not talking about you!); and

-- you have your wolf-crying Number One Gun Nut from the N.R.A. telling the gullible folk who need a gun to validate their manhood that the Kenyan usurper is comin' to git their AK-47s and grenade launchers (the same warning he had for the gullible in 2008)!

That's your CPAC roundup. 'Nuff said.

Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll... Again

For the second straight year, far-right libertarian Rep. Ron "Sprinklerhead's Dad" Paul (Rethug?-TX) won the straw poll at the Crackpot... er, Conservative Political Action Conference. With 3,742 votes cast, Paul garnered 30% of the votes, with Willard/Fluff/Flip Flop Mittens Romney second at 23%. Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, whose issue over the past several years has been legalizing weed, was third (!) at 6%. Where did the over-inflated egos finish that are normally at the top of the "mainstream media's" list of Very Serious Candidates for Preznit? Hee-hee: Poot Gingrich, 5%; Tim "No Good 'N'" Pawlenty, 4%; Mama Fizzly, 3%; and Huckleberry Mike Huckabee, 2%!!! Bwahahahaha! Oh yeah, that's "conservative stool" alright!

(Image: Ron Paul, right, and Paultard -- or is it conservative stool?)

Mooslims Infiltrate CPAC!

Wingnut conspiracy alert!! The crackpots at World Nut Daily and Frank "Gas" Gaffney have detected mooslim infiltration in CPAC... wait... CPAC? The Conservative Political Action Conference? Holy jihad, those mooslims are everywhere!

We Hackwhackers encourage World Nut Daily and Gaffney to continue their investigation of CPAC, specifically uber-wanking reactionary Grover Norquist (psst! his wife's a mooslim, you know!) and former Bushie Suhail "Neo Con" Khan, whom they believe to be behind the infiltration. After all, any squabbling among inmates in the wingnut welfare asylum is always entertaining and much to be desired!

Reality Bites

We saw this quote from Bill Maher's "Real Time" show the other day, and thought it was appropriate after the Conservative Political Action Committee's recent hate-fest in DC. Maher's talking about teabaggers, but it really applies to all fringe wingnuts:
"In a recent poll almost ninety percent of Tea Baggers said that they thought taxes had either gone up or stayed the same under Obama. Only two percent thought they went down. But the reality is taxes have gone down for ninety five percent of working families.

Think about that. Only two percent of the people in a "movement" about taxes named after a tax revolt have the slightest idea what's going on...with taxes."

The "conservative" movement -- as symbolized by CPAC -- has become a home for the John Birch Society and militia nuts more than ever. Reality won't intrude into their world. It's much more comforting for them to believe the nonsense they tell each other.

Mittens in 2012!

America's next Harold Stassen, Willard "Mitt/ Mutt/ Muff/ Mittens" Romney came out of this week's Crooks, Poltroons, Assholes and Crackpots (CPAC) meeting as the #1 choice for the Rethug nomination in 2012. Well, hold on there, wingnuts! You might want Wonkette's take on that first.

Wingnut Weenies in Washington

Today marks the start of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, DC. Notable guests began to arrive yesterday (photo) with the prospect of hearing conservative intellectuals such as Joe (not his real name) the (not really a) Plumber give his thoughts on the economic recession and "socialism." That should be a hoot.

Certainly, many wingnuts will be crying in their milkshakes over the disastrous performance Tuesday night of their one-time hero, Gov. Bobby "Bo Jingles" Jindal. Bo Jingles is reportedly vacationing in Disney World and will be lucky if Mickey Mouse wants to be photographed with him. On a brighter note, the wingnuts are looking forward to their leader, Rush "Pills" Limpballs, to share his wisdom during the conference. Limpballs is planning his own conference to explore why only 37 percent of women view him favorably, far less than men (suggestion: Limpballs should have asked his 3 former wives first).

These aren't happy times for these earnest wingnuts. Their one-time leaders are either disgraced, defeated, or forced to make a living on the small town lecture circuit. But for the rest of us, their difficulties provide endless amusement and gratification. Carry on, boys and girls!

In Her Cupps

In its ongoing mania to provide valuable column space to unknown wingnuts, today's WaPo has a column by "S.E. Cupps", who's identified as the co-author of "Why You're Wrong About the Right." (Heh, a pun!) Cupps reports on the "stars" of this year's CPAC conference in Washington (CPAC stands for "Crooks, Poltroons, Assholes and Crackpots", btw). She's awed by the awesomeness of Newtie Gingrich, Karl "Turdblossom" Rove, and (be still my heart) Tin Man Steele! Of course the column has a big color photo of (M)Ann Coulter looking particularly vulturine, and mention is also made of fellow "conservative rock stars" Michelle Malkin and Rush "Pills" Limbaugh.

Let all those names circle around your skull for a moment and you almost feel a sense of sadness that this collection of clowns and misfits is what can be called the elite of the conservative movement today.

Is Winky Going Rogue. . .Again?

Alaska Gov. Winky You Betcha has surprised the wingnut community by turning down an invitation to be the prime attraction at their upcoming poo festival. The Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) was expecting Winky at their annual crap throwing contest, along with such prominent wingnuts as Newt "Poot" Gingrich and (M)Ann Coulter.

Last month, Winky blew off House Rethuglicans who wanted her to give them a pep talk during their tantrum over the economic stimulus bill. Winky indicated she had pressing duties back in Alaska, but showed up in Washington to attend some high profile events, including the Alfalfa dinner. Does this mean that Winky would prefer palling around with "terrists" rather than associating with Real Americans? We know one Real American who would be happy to stand in for Winky: America's favorite jackass-of-all-trades, Joe (actually Samuel) the Plumber (actually a non-licensed supply contractor). Can't get more "real" than him.

The Right Wing's "Turnaround" Guy

Following last week's Conservative Political Action Committee's weenie roast in Washington, DC, various right wing poohbahs thought it would be a good idea to annoint Willard "Flip/Mousse/Mutt/Mitt" Romney as the "face of conservatism." "Mr. Romney is the 'turnaround specialist' the conservative movement needs," one winger proclaimed.

(We need to pause for a moment. . . .BWHAHAHAHAHAHAAA. Ahh, that's better.)

Well, he is experienced in turning around on every issue that is supposedly dear to the winger movement. He is, as Walnuts! McCain so aptly put it, "the candidate of change." Unfortunately for the wingers, he also ran either second, or more often, third in Rethug primaries/caucuses, because the true believers seemed to sense a phony in their midst.

It's entirely possible that in the next few years, Willard may again evolve from a "conservative" to some other political variety, depending, of course, on which way the Rethuglican winds are blowing. But the thought of Willard being put forward as "the face of conservatism" can only bring smiles to the faces of progressives everywhere.

A Gathering of Eagles...

... if by "eagles" you mean "chickenhawks." Yes, today commences the annual convention of the Conservative Political Action Committee (doesn't that sound vaguely Stalinist?). Looking at their invitees is like looking at a gallery of numbnuts, crackpots (minus (M)Ann Coulter this year-- though they're still selling her book!), and small men looking for balconies. If this year's election will be primarily about the past vs. the future, ladies and gentlemen, these reactionary, monochromatic authoritarians stand firmly in the former camp. Advice to CPAC attendees: Don't forget to take your "meds"; make sure they're unmarked bills; and it's the third stall from the right.

(M)Ann Coulter Dissed by CPAC

This year's Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) won't be featuring (M)Ann Coulter as a featured speaker, apparently. She has created controversies in past CPAC group gropes, all but calling John Edwards a "fag" in 2007 (puzzling accusation coming from the never married spinster
(M)Ann, with the prominent Adam's Apple - - but we digress).

Guess the stench was too much even for the pathetic pigmies at CPAC. Although it would have been interesting to see (M)Ann set herself on fire again this year for the entertainment of the little boys at CPAC.

UPDATE: The certifiably unhinged (M)Ann was on the Fux Channel to claim that, if Walnuts! McCain is the Rethug nominee, she will not only vote for Hillary Clinton, but she will campaign for her. Hillary's "loss" is McCain's "gain".

Blamin' the Victims...

...or what passes for thought, CPAC-style. Newtie Gingrich, wingnut intellectual emeritus and mini-government proponent, demonstrated his non-compassionate conservative thinkin' at the recent CPAC gaffe-fest, pontificatin' about the Katrina catastrophe thusly: "How can you have the mess we have in New Orleans and not have had deep investigations of the federal government, the state government, the city government, and the failure of citizenship in the Ninth Ward, where 22,000 people were so uneducated and so unprepared, they literally couldn't get out of the way of a hurricane."

Newtie-boy. Let's focus on the uneducated and unprepared folks at FEMA and in the Oval Office who to this day, a year-and-a-half after Katrina, still don't have the faintest, foggiest notion how to help - or at least get out of the way - in the rebuilding and revitalizing of New Orleans. That's the real outrage, and where a "deep investigation" should focus.
